Northamptonshire County Cricket Club is one of eighteen first-class county clubs within the domestic cricket structure of England and Wales. It represents the historic county of Northamptonshire. Its limited overs team is called the Northants Steelbacks –a reference to the Northamptonshire Regiment which was formed in 1881. The name was supposedly a tribute to the soldiers' apparent indifference to the harsh discipline imposed by their officers. Founded in 1878,Northamptonshire (Northants) held minor status at first but was a prominent member of the early Minor Counties Championship during the 1890s. In 1905,the club joined the County Championship and was elevated to first-class status,since when the team have played in every top-level domestic cricket competition in England.
Peter Willey is a former English cricketer,who played as a right-handed batsman and right-arm offbreak bowler. In and out of the England team,he interrupted his international career for three years by taking part in the first of the England players' South African rebel tours in 1982. After his playing career ended,he became a Test umpire.

Peter Granville Lee,affectionately known as "Leapy",is a former cricketer who played for Northamptonshire and Lancashire County Cricket Clubs. He was a right-arm fast-medium bowler who moved the ball off the seam and became among the most effective bowlers in English county cricket during the 1970s. Presumably because his batting was impotent as shown by his highest first-class score in more than 200 matches being 26,Lee appears never to have been considered seriously for Test cricket. He toured South Africa twice with teams organised by Derrick Robins. He was born at Arthingworth,Northamptonshire.
The British Universities cricket team was a cricket team whose players were drawn from university students studying in Great Britain. The team played under the title of Combined Universities until 1995. The team played List A cricket from 1975 to 1998 and first-class cricket from 1993 to 2006.
Michael Burns is an English first-class list cricket umpire and former first-class cricketer who played county cricket for Warwickshire and Somerset in a first-class career which spanned from 1992 until 2005. He also played Minor Counties cricket for Cumberland and Cornwall. An adaptable cricketer,he appeared for Cumberland and Warwickshire as a wicket-keeper,but when he moved to Somerset he developed into an aggressive batsman who bowled at medium-pace when needed.
Charles Cuthbert Powell Williams,Baron Williams of Elvel,was a British business executive,Labour life peer and member of the House of Lords. In his 20s he played first-class cricket while at university and for several seasons afterwards. He was the stepfather of Justin Welby,the Archbishop of Canterbury.
Combined Oxford and Cambridge Universities cricket teams were formed at intervals between 1839 and 1992,often playing against touring teams. Mostly the team consisted of students who were current members of either Cambridge University Cricket Club or Oxford University Cricket Club but there were four matches from 1874 to 1893 in which the Universities team was a Past and Present combination. The combined teams always held first-class status,unofficially at first and then officially from 1895.
Nigel Francis Mark Popplewell is an English solicitor and former first-class cricketer who made more than 200 appearances for Somerset between 1979 and 1985. A right-handed batsman and right-arm medium-pace bowler,Popplewell also occasionally played as wicket-keeper.
Simon Charles Ecclestone played first-class and List A cricket for Oxford University and Somerset between 1994 and 1998. He also appeared in 1992 in List A cricket for Cambridgeshire. He was born at Great Dunmow,Essex.
The 1979 Gillette Cup Final was a cricket match between Somerset County Cricket Club and Northamptonshire County Cricket Club played on 8 September 1979 at Lord's in London. It was the seventeenth final of the Gillette Cup,which had been the first English domestic knock-out competition between first-class sides. Northamptonshire had won the competition in 1976;Somerset were playing their second consecutive final,having lost to Sussex in 1978.
