Charles Hugh Alison (5 March 1883 –20 October 1952) was a British golf course designer. He worked predominantly with Harry Colt,John Morrison,and Alister MacKenzie,in 1928 forming Colt,Alison &Morrison Ltd.
Alison was born in Preston,Lancashire. He attended Malvern College in Worcestershire before going up to New College,Oxford,to study history,law and divinity. He represented the university at golf in 1903 and 1904,but did not finish his degree. [1] [2] He also played four first-class cricket matches for Somerset County Cricket Club between 1902 and 1905 and played Minor Counties cricket for Buckinghamshire in 1911 and 1912. [3]
Alison served in both World War I and World War II decoding ciphers. [2]
One of Alison's most-respected designs is Milwaukee Country Club (1929),co-designed with Colt,which was ranked among the Top 50 golf courses in America by Golf Digest in 2007. Another endearing Colt-Alison design is Century Country Club (1927) in Purchase,New York. On 26 April 1922, The New York Times announced that Colt,MacKenzie &Alison of London would be developing the new Century golf course on 180 acres (0.73 km2) of pristine countryside. The course's architects are listed as Colt and Alison but MacKenzie's influence is imbued throughout the 18 holes. He was one of the founding members of the International Society of Golf Architects in 1929. [2]
On a trip to Japan in 1930 he laid down principles that guided Japanese golf course design throughout the 20th century. [1]
Alison and his wife moved to South Africa in 1947. He worked on several South African golf courses before his death in Cape Town in 1952. [2]
Alister MacKenzie was a golf course architect whose course designs span four continents. Originally trained as a surgeon,MacKenzie served as a civilian physician with the British Army during the Boer War where he first became aware of the principles of camouflage. During the First World War,MacKenzie made his own significant contributions to military camouflage,which he saw as closely related to golf course design.

He participated in the design or redesign of over 300 golf courses in all six inhabited continents,including those at Wentworth Club,Sunningdale,Muirfield,Royal Portrush,and Royal Liverpool.
John Stanton Fleming Morrison DFC was a British golf course architect born in Newcastle-on-Tyne,UK. He worked predominantly with Charles Alison,Harry Colt,and Alister MacKenzie,in 1928 forming Colt,Alison &Morrison Ltd.
Albert Warren "Tilly" Tillinghast was an American golf course architect. Tillinghast was one of the most prolific architects in the history of golf;he worked on more than 265 different courses. He was inducted into the World Golf Hall of Fame in 2015.

The Union League Golf and Country Club of San Francisco was constructed in 1929 in Millbrae,California,United States. It was one of the most ambitious golf and country club projects of its era in Northern California. It was conceived in the prosperous time that proceeded the Great Depression by a prominent group of San Francisco businessmen who would spare no expense during the design-phase of the project. The golf course was designed by Alister MacKenzie who considered it one of the top three courses on the West Coast. The unforeseen economic downturn of the Great Depression caused the club to become financially insolvent and in 1933 it was reorganized as Millbrae Country Club. In 1945 the club was named Green Hills Country Club.

Bury Golf Club,is a private golf course and club in Unsworth,Bury,designed by Alister MacKenzie,Charles Hugh Alison,and Harry Shapland Colt. The club was originally located at a course in Redvales,Bury,before moving to its current Unsworth location in 1922. The current course is eighteen-holes in length,and sits east of the clubhouse at Unsworth Hall. Notable players include Harry Vardon,Henry James,Sandy Herd,and Alister MacKenzie.
