Charles Robert Hawkins (born October 17,1943) is a former American politician. A Republican,he most recently served as Chair of the Virginia Tobacco Commission and was also previously a member of the Virginia Senate from 1992 until 2008. Prior to this,he was a member of the Virginia House of Delegates from the 21st District from 1982 until 1991.
George Mason was an American planter,politician,Founding Father,and delegate to the U.S. Constitutional Convention in Philadelphia in 1787,where he was one of three delegates who refused to sign the Constitution. His writings,including substantial portions of the Fairfax Resolves of 1774,the Virginia Declaration of Rights of 1776,and his Objections to this Constitution of Government (1787) opposing ratification,have exercised a significant influence on American political thought and events. The Virginia Declaration of Rights,which Mason principally authored,served as a basis for the United States Bill of Rights,of which he has been deemed a father.
Francis Lightfoot Lee was a Founding Father of the United States and a member of the House of Burgesses in the Colony of Virginia. As an active protester regarding issues such as the Stamp Act of 1765,Lee helped move the colony in the direction of independence from Britain. Lee was a delegate to the Virginia Conventions and the Continental Congress. He was a signer of the Declaration of Independence and Articles of Confederation as a representative of Virginia. In addition to his career in politics,Lee owned a tobacco plantation as well as many slaves. He was a member of the Lee family,a prominent Virginian dynasty.
The Virginia General Assembly is the legislative body of the Commonwealth of Virginia,the oldest continuous law-making body in the Western Hemisphere,and the first elected legislative assembly in the New World. It was established on July 30,1619.
