Charles Radtke born in 1964, is a studio furniture maker working in Cedarburg, Wisconsin. His focus is design, rarely if ever repeating an object. His work is found primarily in private collections, with the exception of his Sarcophagus #1 residing in permanent collection in the Renwick Gallery of the Smithsonian Art Museum in Washington, DC and in the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston. The piece that is part of the collection in Boston, is on display at Milwaukee Art Museum, April 19, 2019 – August 25, 2019 as part of his exhibition: Charles Radtke: Contained.
Born and raised in Hermann, Missouri, he is the youngest of 10 children. His mother was a teacher, and his father a butcher/merchant. Charley committed to the vocation of woodworking in his twenties after finishing his computer science degree and working for AT&T for three years.
While in college and while working for AT&T, he worked with the Franciscan Friars in Oak Brook, Illinois, in their furniture shop. There he learned the basics of furniture construction, making what he describes as “heavy-handed furniture in a Gothic style.” Radtke joined a liturgical art group called Seraph, (seraph is the highest power of angel) where he designed pieces for several prominent churches in Chicago, Indianapolis, and Mundelein, Il.
He honed his skills while in Washington, DC, then setting up his own studios in Colorado, and southern Illinois, using each stop to master his design vernacular and illuminate his own unique woodworking aesthetic.
In July 1994, Radtke, his wife Chris and daughter Chloe moved to Cedarburg, Wisconsin, where he built his current studio.
His work is most often described as contemporary, focused mainly on cabinets but also includes tables, chairs and pedestals. He is most well known for his attention to detail, his use of hand, rather than machine, work (dovetailing, planing, carving and finishing) and his preference for native American hardwoods. Influences that are apparent are Emile-Jacques Ruhlmann, Carl Malmsten, Charles Rennie MacIntosh, and Wharton Esherick.
Rather than doing multiples of the same design, Radtke prefers to work in series, taking a design concept allowing the different woods and slightly different viewpoints to help the execution of the piece evolve. Radtke's Sarcophagus #1 was purchased in 1999 with funds from a private collector, for permanent collection in the Smithsonian Art Museum's Renwick Gallery. This cabinet is the first in the Sarcophagus Series that stretches 5 deep as of the end of 2009. His other Series work includes Inner Light (9 pieces), Music Cabinet (2 pieces), Weave (1 piece), Twins (1 piece), and Leaf Series (3). [2]
Silas Kopf is an American furniture maker specializing in the art of marquetry. Kopf graduated from Princeton University in 1972 with a degree in architecture and soon began designing and making furniture. In 1988, he received a Craftsman's Fellowship from the National Endowment for the Arts, and used the opportunity to study traditional marquetry technique at the École Boulle, an institute of interior architecture and design, in Paris. His major projects include several pianos commissioned by Steinway & Sons and benches, desks, and cabinets for private collections and museums. His designs frequently incorporate floral depictions, other images from nature, and trompe-l'œil concepts. He first became interested in marquetry because he hoped for an alternative, less consumerist lifestyle.
Tage Frid was a Danish-born woodworker, educator and author who influenced the development of the studio furniture movement in the United States. His design work was often in the Danish-modern style, best known for his three legged stool and his publications.
Sam Maloof was an American furniture designer and woodworker. Maloof's work is in the collections of several major American museums, including the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, the Philadelphia Museum of Art, and the Smithsonian American Art Museum. Maloof, the first craftsman to receive a MacArthur fellowship, was described by The New York Times as "a central figure in the postwar American crafts movement".

Wendell Castle was an American sculptor and furniture maker and an important figure in late 20th century American craft. He has been referred to as the "father of the art furniture movement" and included in the "Big 4" of modern woodworking with Wharton Esherick, George Nakashima, and Sam Maloof.
The Moulthrop family are three generations of American woodturners, starting with Ed Moulthrop, credited as the "father of modern woodturning". The family has been documented in the book Moulthrop: A Legacy in Wood.
Wharton Esherick was an American sculptor who worked primarily in wood, especially applying the principles of sculpture to common utilitarian objects. Consequently, he is best known for his sculptural furniture and furnishings. Esherick was recognized in his lifetime by his peers as the “dean of American craftsmen” for his leadership in developing nontraditional designs and for encouraging and inspiring artists and artisans by example. Esherick’s influence is evident in the work of contemporary artisans, particularly in the Studio Craft Movement. His home and studio in Malvern, Pennsylvania, are part of the Wharton Esherick Museum, which has been listed as a National Historic Landmark since 1993.
Thomas J. Duffy is a designer/craftsman whose present work is the conceptualization and creation of curved doors using lasers. Duffy has also crafted one-of-a-kind cabinets, chairs, and other furniture. For many years, Duffy also made St. Lawrence River rowing skiffs. One of his furniture works is in the permanent collection of the Boston Museum of Fine Arts. He has exhibited at numerous galleries and other venues. The New York Times described him as “One of this country’s leading cabinet and chair makers..."
JB Blunk (1926–2002) was a sculptor who worked primarily in wood and clay. In addition to the pieces he produced in wood and ceramics, Blunk worked in other media, including jewelry, furniture, painting, bronze, and stone.
Rosanne Somerson is an American-born woodworker, furniture designer/maker, educator, and former President of Rhode Island School of Design (RISD). An artist connected with the early years of the Studio Furniture, her work and career have been influential to the field.
Jacob Cress, better known as Jake Cress, is a furniture maker in Fincastle, Virginia who is known for his interpretations of classical 18th century furniture. He considers himself to be a cabinet maker and not an artist. He also builds normal classical furniture, miniature furniture, and carves boxes, as well as decorative pieces. He also restores furniture. Additionally, he builds more modern pieces like country tables and desks. Cress works with mahogany, walnut, and cherry woods. His animated works include "The Decorator," "Alladin's Lamp," "Hickory Dickory Dock Clock," "Self-Portrait," and "Clock Face." Cress crafts each piece of furniture by hand in his shop without sketching the furniture before he begins working on it.
Rupert Williamson has been a Designer and creator of one-off furniture for over 40 years with work in many museums and public collections, together with his work written about and illustrated in many books and articles.In 1999 he received a PhD for his thesis “New Forms of Imagery in Furniture". The Reflections of a Designer working in the Craft Revival of the 1970s and beyond” together with a major collection of his designs.
Emil Milan was an American woodworker known for his carved bowls, birds, and other accessories and art in wood. Trained as a sculptor at the Art Students League of New York, he designed and made wooden ware in the New York City metropolitan area, and later in rural Pennsylvania where he lived alone and used his barn as a workshop. Participating in many woodworking, craft, and design exhibits of his day, his works are in the Smithsonian American Art Museum and Renwick Gallery, the Yale Art Gallery, the Center for Art in Wood, the Museum of Art and Design, and many private collections. Once prominent in midcentury modern design, Milan slipped into obscurity after his death. His legacy has been revived by an extensive biographical research project that has led to renewed interest in his life, work, and influence.
Norm Sartorius is an American woodworker who carves fine art spoons in many styles including natural, biomorphic, abstract, symbolic, ethnic, and ceremonial. His works are in the permanent collections of the Smithsonian American Art Museum's Renwick Gallery, the Yale University Art Gallery, the Philadelphia Museum of Art, and other public and private collections. He is a frequent participant in woodworking and craft shows in America, and won the Award of Excellence in Wood at the 2015 American Craft Council show in Baltimore and the 2015 Smithsonian Craft Show in Washington, DC. Since 2008, he has co-directed a grant-funded research project on the life, work, and legacy of American woodworker Emil Milan.
Michelle Holzapfel is an American woodturner and a participant in the American Craft movement. She has five decades of experience turning and carving native hardwoods in Marlboro, Vermont, where she has lived her adult life. Holzapfel fits the definitions of both Studio artist and Material movement artist. A product of the revolutionary back-to-the-earth movement of 1960s and 1970s, she attributes the expressiveness of her turned and carved forms to the idealism of those years. Raised in rural Rhode Island, she has worked alone in her Vermont studio—shared only with her husband, the furniture maker and educator David Holzapfel—since 1976. Her wood pieces which feature intricate carvings have been exhibited in museums and galleries in the U.S., Australia and Europe. Publications featuring her work include but are not limited to House Beautiful, American Craft, Woodworking, and Fine Woodworking.
Wendy Maruyama is an American visual artist, furniture maker, and educator from California. She was born in La Junta, Colorado.
Judy Kensley McKie is an American artist, furniture designer, and furniture maker. She has been making her signature style of furniture with carved and embellished animal and plant motifs since 1977. She is based in Boston, Massachusetts.

Katie Hudnall is an American artist known for her woodworking. Hudnall teaches at the University of Wisconsin–Madison having previously taught at the Herron School of Art and Design in Indianapolis.
