Charles Robertson-Adams (born 1976) is a British former track and field athlete who represented both Scotland and Great Britain. His personal best time for the 400 metres hurdles was 50.24 seconds, which stood as the Scottish record until 2022.
He was born Charles Lyndon Robertson-Adams in 1976. His father was born in Ghana to a Scottish family and returned to Scotland at a young age.
Robertson-Adams was a promising junior and won the 400m hurdles at the English Schools' Athletics Championships for three years in a row between 1994 - 1996. He represented Great Britain at the 1996 World Junior Championships finishing in 4th place in his heat with a time of 52.91. He did not qualify for the semifinals.
He became the British champion in 1997 by winning the AAA Championships. Robertson-Adams represented Great Britain at the 1999 European Athletics U23 Championships in the 400m hurdles finishing in 7th place in his heat with a time 52.95. He did not qualify for the final.
Robertson-Adams became the Scottish champion over 400m hurdles in both 2001 and 2002 and on 4 July 2001 he set the Scottish record in the 400m hurdles with a time of 50.24 seconds, recorded at Loughborough University. This record stood until 2 June 2022 when it was broken by Jack Lawrie. [1]
His sole senior international appearance came at the 2001 Summer Universiade, where he competed in the heats. [2]
Robertson-Adams qualified to represent Scotland in the 2002 Commonwealth Games and was nominated for selection by Scottish athletics. However, his selection was blocked by the Commonwealth Games committee as neither he, nor his parents, had been born in Scotland. Mike Russell MSP called for his exclusion to be reversed, however, this was not achieved and Robertson-Adams subsequently retired from athletics. [3] [4]

During a career in which he represented Great Britain and Wales, he won an Olympic silver medal, became world champion twice, world indoor champion once, was undefeated at the European Championships for 12 years and was twice Commonwealth champion. His world record of 12.91 seconds for the 110 m hurdles stood for over 10 years and his 60 metres hurdles world record stood for nearly 27 years.
Lee McConnell is a retired Scottish athlete, who competed in the 400 metres and 400 metres hurdles having started her career as a high jumper. She is a three-time Olympian who represented Great Britain in 2004, 2008 and 2012. With 12 medals from major championships, McConnell is the third most decorated Scottish track and field athlete of all-time. She was voted Scottish Athlete of the Year in 2002, 2003 and 2007.
Louis Jacobus van Zyl, better known as L. J. van Zyl, is a South African athlete competing in the 400 metre hurdles. He is the South African record holder in the event with a personal best of 47.66 seconds, which he achieved twice, three months apart. His time ranks him in the all-time top 25. He is a three-time African Champion in the event and competed for his country at the 2008, 2012 and 2016 Summer Olympics.
Martyn Joseph Rooney is an English sprinter who specialises in the 400 metres event. He reached the 400 m final at the 2008 Summer Olympics and won bronze in the 4×400 metres relay. A mainstay on the anchor leg of the Great Britain and England 4 x 400 metre relay teams, at the 2009 World Championships in Athletics he won a silver medal with the Great Britain relay team, and bronze in the 2015 and 2017 World Championships.
Damien David Greaves is male former sprints and hurdling track and field athlete who represented Great Britain at the 2000 Summer Olympics in Sydney, Australia.
Andrew Steven Turner is an English bodybuilder and retired track and field athlete who specialised in the 110 metres hurdles and occasionally competed in the 100 and 200 metres sprints as well as long jump. At the 110 m hurdles, he is the 2011 World Championship bronze medallist, the 2010 European Champion and the 2010 Commonwealth Champion. Also in 2010, he broke the automatically timed world record in the 200 metres hurdles. He was coached by Lloyd Cowan.
Matthew John "Matt" Elias is a retired Welsh athlete who specialised in the 400 metres sprint and 400 metres hurdles. During his international career he represented Great Britain. In 2003 he won a gold medal at the European Championships and at the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens he finished 5th in the 4 × 400 m relay, He is also a part of Super Schools.
Peirresha Alexandra Shakes-Drayton is a British retired track and field athlete. After specialising in the 400 metres hurdles in the early part of her career, a knee injury at the 2013 World Championships forced Shakes-Drayton to concentrate on the 400 metres on her return to athletics. She is the 2013 European Indoor Champion in the 400 metres and won a 2012 World Indoor Championship gold medal in the 4 x 400 metres relay. She has also won silver and bronze medals in the 4 × 400 m relay at the World Championships.
Sir Charles Lawrence Somerset Clarke, 7th Baronet, OLY is a former professional 110 m hurdler who finished fourth in the London Olympic Games 110 m hurdles final. He is the son of Sir Toby Clarke, 6th Baronet and succeeded to the baronetcy on his father's death in 2019. He served as Captain of the Great Britain Athletics Team at the 2015 European Athletics Indoor Championships and was coached in Bath by Malcolm Arnold. He was coached in Paris by Giscard Samba Koundys for the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro. He currently works for Citigroup in London. He is also a member of the American Roosevelt family.
