MacHale Park is a GAA stadium in Castlebar, County Mayo, Ireland. It is the home of the Castlebar Mitchels GAA and Mayo GAA Gaelic football teams. Built in 1931, the ground currently has a capacity of 25,369 and is named after John MacHale, Catholic Archbishop of Tuam from 1831 to 1881. It is the twelfth-biggest sports stadium in the Republic of Ireland by capacity and the second-biggest in the province of Connacht after Pearse Stadium in Galway; which is the home of Galway GAA.

Barnes Murphy, is a former Gaelic footballer who represented the Sligo county team during the 1970s and 1980s. Aside from winning a GAA All Stars Award in 1974, he won a Connacht Senior Football Championship medal with Sligo in 1975 when he both captained and coached Sligo the same year. Murphy played football for Connacht many times in his career and his talent was duly recognized by the Connacht Railway Cup management in 1976 when he was selected as the first and only Sligo man to captain his province.

Mickey Kearins is a former Gaelic football player from County Sligo. He played for the Sligo county team for 17 years from 1961 to 1978. In 1971 he was the first Sligo man to win an All-Star. He is also the only Sligo player to win a Cú Chulainn Award-winning it three consecutive years in 1964–66. In 1975 he helped Sligo win the Connacht Senior Football Championship for the first time since 1928.
St. John's is a Gaelic Athletic Association club based in Carraroe and the eastern ward of Sligo, Republic of Ireland. It is one of the newer clubs in the county, having been formed in 1987 after a re-organisation of the GAA structures in the Sligo urban area. The 2011 League of Ireland Cup Final also known as the 2011 EA Sports Cup Final was the final match of the 2011 League of Ireland Cup, the 38th season of the League of Ireland Cup, a football competition for the 27 teams from the Premier Division, First Division, A Championship and the Ulster Senior League. The match was contested by Cork City and Derry City, at Turners Cross in Cork on 24 September 2011. It was broadcast live on Setanta Sports.

Tommy Jordan is a Gaelic football manager. He managed Crossmolina Deel Rovers to the 2000–01 All-Ireland Senior Club Football Championship and, after unsuccessfully applying for the role of senior manager of the Mayo county team, later managed the Sligo county team from 2007, shortly after the county had won the Connacht Senior Football Championship. The Sligo appointment meant that, with John Maughan already managing Roscommon, two men from the same club were managing two of Connacht's five counties. Because Sligo were relegated to Division 4 of the National Football League, the GAA forced the reigning Connacht champions to participate in the Tommy Murphy Cup instead of the All-Ireland qualifiers when they exited the provincial championship; the county's exit to London in that competition after many players declined to participate, led Jordan to resign.
