Chelsea Heights and Westchester Hills are adjacent neighborhoods, separated by a municipal park, in the northwest corner of the Atlanta, Georgia suburb of Decatur. Chelsea Heights straddles the east and west sides of the CSX railroad tracks, falling within the City of Decatur and the unincorporated DeKalb County, respectively. The latter part, though located east of what historically was Druid Hills, is part of the Druid Hills CDP and participates in the Druid Hills Civic Association: see Chelsea Heights (Druid Hills).
Westchester Hills is fully within the city limits of Decatur, and is the more northerly of the two neighborhoods.
Chelsea Heights is the older and more historic of the two neighborhoods. It primarily contains single-family homes, but also contains a modest, low-rise condominium complex called Emory Chase, and duplex homes on North Parkwood Rd. Westchester Hills consists of single-family homes, the Decatur YMCA and a nursing home.
Both neighborhoods are north of Scott Blvd.; east of the heart of Druid Hills; and south of North Decatur. Although the neighborhoods front on Scott Blvd. and Clairemont Ave., there are no significant commercial structures other than the Decatur YMCA and the Venetian Pools Community Association, a private pool. Peavine Creek, part of the South Fork Peachtree Creek watershed, passes through these neighborhoods.
The Chelsea Land Company began platting Chelsea Heights as early as 1912, but the area west of the railroad tracks (in unincorporated DeKalb County) was not platted until 1914. [1] Construction of the first streets began in the 1920s, but most of the residences were constructed in the 1940s and 1950s – after the Great Depression. The variety of residential architectural styles in Chelsea Heights are partially due to the pre/post World War II construction periods. The oldest house in the neighborhood is a much-renovated American Small house that was built in 1935 and is located at 259 Chelsea Drive. The neighborhood has retained its historic character. Only five houses were constructed in the neighborhood between the 1960s and the present, and most of the renovations to historic houses have been compatible with the predominant historic styles of the neighborhood. Westchester Hills, on the other hand, primarily consists of single-family homes primarily built in the first half of the 1950s. Both neighborhoods have seen "tear downs" in the last 10–15 years, with the modest homes being replaced by upscale homes.
The name "Chelsea Heights" is derived from the name of the development company, Chelsea Land Company, and the hilly terrain of west Decatur. Despite the construction of some homes in the 1920s, the majority of Chelsea Heights homes were constructed in the post-war era. The two primary architectural styles found in the community were Minimal Traditional and Ranch style homes, [1] but Bungalow, Cape Cod and Contemporary homes are also present in the neighborhood. Most residences have a horizontal appearance to them, and are modest in comparison to the mansions located in the heart of Druid Hills to the west. For this reason, Chelsea Heights has more in common architecturally with Decatur than with Druid Hills. The neighborhood is also notable for its curvilinear, steep roads, and for homes that sit 1-2 stories above those roads.
City of Decatur streets in the Chelsea Heights neighborhood include Chelsea Dr., Pope Cir., Mockingbird Ln., Ridley Cir., Kathryn Ave., Merrill Ave. and North Parkwood Rd. North Parkwood backs up to the CSX railroad tracks. Coventry Road is the main road that bisects the neighborhood. The middle segment of Coventry Rd. is located within Chelsea Heights' City of Decatur section; the west leg is in Druid Hills; and the east leg is in Ponce De Leon Heights. Additional streets are located in the western section of Chelsea Heights.
"Westchester Hills" derives its name from Westchester Dr., the primary east-west street in the neighborhood, and its location in the hilly terrain of west Decatur. Other streets in Westchester Hills include Maediris Way, Dogwood Way and Harold Byrd Way. The west end of Westchester Dr. backs up to the CSX railroad tracks.
Decatur is a city and the county seat of DeKalb County, Georgia, United States, part of the Atlanta metropolitan area. With a population of 24,928 in the 2020 census, the municipality is sometimes assumed to be larger since multiple ZIP Codes in unincorporated DeKalb County bear Decatur as the address.
Druid Hills is a community which includes both a census-designated place (CDP) in unincorporated DeKalb County, Georgia, United States, as well as a neighborhood of the city of Atlanta. The CDP's population was 14,568 at the 2010 census. The CDP formerly contained the main campus of Emory University and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC); however, they were annexed by Atlanta in 2018. The Atlanta-city section of Druid Hills is one of Atlanta's most affluent neighborhoods with a mean household income in excess of $238,500.
North Decatur is an unincorporated community and census-designated place (CDP) in DeKalb County, Georgia, United States. The population was 18,511 in 2020.
North Druid Hills, also known as Briarcliff or Toco Hills, is an unincorporated community and census-designated place in DeKalb County, Georgia, United States. The population was 20,385 in 2020. The commercial center of the area is the Toco Hill Shopping Center, located near the intersection of North Druid Hills Road and LaVista Road.
From its incorporation in 1847, the municipal boundaries of Atlanta, Georgia, United States, were extended repeatedly from a small area around its railroad station to today's city covering 131.7 square miles (341 km2).
Oakhurst is a historic neighborhood in the southwest corner of Decatur, Georgia, a suburb of Atlanta, Georgia. It is located south of downtown Decatur and approximately six miles east of downtown Atlanta. Oakhurst primarily consists of residences built in the early 20th century and neighborhood businesses. It is roughly bounded by the City of Atlanta's Kirkwood neighborhood on the west ; the Atlanta city limits on the south; West College Ave. on the north; and South McDonough St. on the east. There is also a neighborhood near the College Heights Early Learning Center referred to as "College Heights", but it is part of Historic Oakhurst.
Avondale is a train station in Decatur, Georgia. It is on the Blue Line of the Metropolitan Atlanta Rapid Transit Authority (MARTA) rail system. The station is at-grade and has two island platforms, one for each direction. The center two tracks are not normally used for through service. Because of these middle tracks, it is not uncommon for trains to be bound for Avondale, having passengers change trains at Avondale. A limited number of Green Line trains originate and terminate at Avondale rather than at their normal terminus at Edgewood / Candler Park, though these trains bypass East Lake and Decatur.

California's 34th congressional district is a U.S. congressional district in California. Located in Los Angeles County, the district is represented by Democrat Jimmy Gomez. Its previous U.S. representative, Democrat Xavier Becerra of Los Angeles, resigned January 24, 2017, to become attorney general of California. Representative Gomez won a special election on June 6, 2017, beating fellow Democrat Robert Lee Ahn to replace Becerra. He was later sworn in as the district's U.S. representative on July 11, 2017.
California's 36th congressional district is a U.S. congressional district in California. The 36th district is located primarily in the South Bay and Westside regions of Los Angeles. It takes in the cities of Beverly Hills, Santa Monica, the west side of Culver City, Hermosa Beach, Rancho Palos Verdes, Redondo Beach, Palos Verdes Estates, Rolling Hills Estates, El Segundo, Lomita, Manhattan Beach, and the west side of Torrance, as well as the Los Angeles neighborhoods of Venice, Playa del Rey, Palms, Cheviot Hills, Westwood Village, West Los Angeles, Mar Vista, Westchester, Marina Peninsula, and west side Harbor City.
Ponce de Leon Avenue, often simply called Ponce, provides a link between Atlanta, Decatur, Clarkston, and Stone Mountain, Georgia. It was named for Ponce de Leon Springs, in turn from explorer Juan Ponce de León, but is not pronounced as in Spanish. Several grand and historic buildings are located on the avenue.
Winnona Park is a historic area in the southeast corner of the Atlanta, Georgia suburb of Decatur. It is listed as a historic district on the National Register of Historic Places, but it is not one of the City of Decatur's locally designated historic districts.
Clairemont - Great Lakes is a historic neighborhood in the north central section of the Atlanta, Georgia suburb of Decatur. It primarily consists of residences and churches. However, there are businesses on West Ponce de Leon Avenue, in the southernmost section of the neighborhood. Its rough boundaries are Coventry Road, Ponce de Leon Avenue and Commerce Drive on the south; Church Street on the east; Scott Boulevard on the north; and Willow on the northeast. The section of Superior Avenue north of Scott Boulevard is also considered part of this neighborhood. Ridgeland Park, located northeast of the Clairemont - Great Lakes neighborhood, is not presently considered part of the neighborhood. It was developed later (1946–1950), in unincorporated DeKalb County. However, in 2008 the city of Decatur began evaluating annexation of this neighborhood, which is contiguous to the rest of the development.
Adair Park is a historic and contemporary community in the west section of the Atlanta, Georgia suburb of Decatur. It is one of Decatur’s most diverse communities in terms of building types, and includes several individual neighborhoods. Adair Park has single family residences, townhomes, cluster homes, institutional buildings and commercial buildings – built from the early 1900s to 2008. Its rough boundaries are: downtown Decatur to the east; Ponce de Leon Avenue to the north; Howard Avenue and the railroad tracks to the south; and the Parkwood neighborhood to the west. There is also an Adair Park in southwest Atlanta, but it is not part of the Decatur community.
Ponce de Leon Heights is a historic neighborhood in the west section Decatur, a suburb of the Atlanta, Georgia, USA. It includes single family residences and a church, primarily built in the early 1900s. The neighborhood is located between Scott Blvd. to the northwest, Ponce de Leon Avenue to the south and Coventry Road to the east. Although the neighborhood partially fronts on Ponce de Leon Avenue, there are no commercial businesses.
Parkwood is a neighborhood on the western side of Decatur, Georgia, a suburb of Atlanta. Although a small portion of the neighborhood was always within the city limits of Decatur, the remainder of the Parkwood neighborhood was voluntarily annexed into the City of Decatur effective July 1, 2014. The neighborhood is bounded by Ponce de Leon Avenue to the north; East Lake Road to the south; the CSX railroad tracks to the west; and Melrose Avenue and the Adair Park community to the east.
Sycamore Street is both a street and a historic neighborhood located in the Atlanta, Georgia suburb of Decatur. The street is known for its homes, which are some of the largest historic homes in Decatur. It is also "book-ended” by MARTA stations, and the MARTA track runs underneath the western end of Sycamore Street. The neighborhood includes historic homes, historic churches, townhouses and adaptive reuse condominiums.
Streetcars originally operated in Atlanta downtown and into the surrounding areas from 1871 until the final line's closure in 1949.
Chelsea Heights is a neighborhood at the eastern end of the Druid Hills CDP in DeKalb County, Georgia. Although not part of the area historically considered Druid Hills, it participates in the Druid Hills Civic Association. It is a designated "character area" for which architectural guidelines and recommendations have been established.
