Cheryl R. Ganz (born 1950) FRPSL is an American philatelist who was appointed to the Roll of Distinguished Philatelists in 2018. [1] [2]

Family and education

After her husband's death, Ganz studied United States history at University of Illinois Chicago (UIC) where she earned her PhD in 2005. [3]

Philately

Ganz has been a collector from an early age, collecting, stamps, coins, seashells but as a teenager became interested in Zeppelins and mail carried on the airships. [4]

In October 2005 Ganz joined the staff of the Smithsonian National Postal Museum in Washington and from January 2007 until February 2014 she was its chief curator. Following her retirement she was appointed "curator of philately emerita" for her "significant and lasting contributions" to the museum; the first employee to win this title. [4]

Ganz is a board director of the American Philatelic Society, a society she has been a member of since 1976. [5] She serves as vice-chair on the United States Postal Service’s Citizens' Stamp Advisory Committee. [5] In 2023, Ganz was elected APS President.

Postal history is the study of postal systems and how they operate and, or, the study of the use of postage stamps and covers and associated postal artifacts illustrating historical episodes in the development of postal systems. The term is attributed to Robson Lowe, a professional philatelist, stamp dealer and stamp auctioneer, who made the first organised study of the subject in the 1930s and described philatelists as "students of science", but postal historians as "students of humanity". More precisely, philatelists describe postal history as the study of rates, routes, markings, and means.

George Townsend Turner of Washington, D.C., was considered a leading philatelic bibliophile of his era, amassing a very large body of philatelic literature over his lifetime. He was the acting curator of the Smithsonian Institution's philatelic collection from 1959 until 1962 and was the owner of the largest private philatelic library ever assembled.

Robert P. Odenweller is an American philatelist who is a member of the National Postal Museum's Council of Philatelists and a signatory to the Roll of Distinguished Philatelists. He is a member of The Collectors Club of New York, and an Honorary Fellow of the Royal Philatelic Society London and the Royal Philatelic Society of New Zealand. From 1996 to 2000 he was President of the Grand Prix Club.

World Stamp Show-NY 2016 was an international exhibition of stamp collecting held at the Jacob K. Javits Convention Center in New York City from May 28 to June 4, 2016. It was the first international stamp show to be held in New York since FIPEX in 1956.

Roger Brody is an American philatelist who in 2016 was invited to sign the Roll of Distinguished Philatelists. He is chairman of the Research Committee of the Smithsonian Museum's Council of Philatelists and is a specialist in early twentieth-century United States philately. Brody has received the Alfred F. Lichtenstein Memorial Award from the Collectors Club of New York, and the John H. Luff Award for Distinguished Philatelic Research from the American Philatelic Society.

The National Philatelic Collection is a collection of nearly six million postage stamps, revenue stamps, and related items, owned by the United States Government and managed by the Smithsonian Institution. It is housed within the National Postal Museum and a portion of the collection is on display in the museum's National Stamp Salon. The National Philatelic Collection is among the world's largest and most valuable stamp collections and, along with the Postmaster General's Philatelic Collection, is one of two stamp collections owned by the United States.

Geoffrey Lewis FRPSL is an Australian philatelist who was appointed to the Roll of Distinguished Philatelists in 2018. He is a member of the Australian Philatelic Order and has received the Australian Philatelic Research Award.

Yamil H. Kouri Jr. is an American philatelist who signed the Roll of Distinguished Philatelists in 2020. He serves as President of the Postal History Society.

Patricia Stilwell Walker is an American philatelist who signed the Roll of Distinguished Philatelists in 2022.
