Chess tournaments at the 2021 Pekan Olahraga Nasional were held between 4 October to 13 October in Hotel Swiss Bell, Merauke. 100 chess players from 23 provinces participated in events that are divided into three categories: blitz chess, rapid chess, and standard chess. Each category is composed of five events: men's team, women's team, men's individual, women's individual, and limited individual. The limited individual event is a new event for chess player ages over the age of 60. [1]

The XX National Sports Week, also called PON XX Papua or PON Papua 2021, was the twentieth edition of the Indonesian National Sports Week, hosted by Papua. The event took place from 2 October to 15 October 2021. Lukas Enembe Stadium was the main venue for this edition, both the opening and closing ceremonies. This event was originally going to be held in 2020, but was postponed to 2021 due to Covid-19 pandemic. This edition was the first PON held in the province, as well as in the Western New Guinea region and Eastern Indonesian Time areas.

The chess events at the 22nd Southeast Asian Games were held from 5 to 13 December 2003 at the Vân Đồn sports centre in District 4 of Ho Chi Minh City. This was the first time chess was contested for medals at the Southeast Asian Games. Medals were awarded in eight categories: men's and women's individual and team performances in the combined event held at classical time controls, men's and women's individual competitions at rapid time controls, and men's and women's team competitions at rapid time controls.

He is best known for his highest career achievement at SEA Games 2017, breaking the national record for 100 M Men's Breaststroke last made in 2009 by Indra Gunawan, and won Indonesia's first Gold Medal for that event since 1993 by Wirmandi Sugriat.
