The XX National Sports Week (Indonesian : Pekan Olahraga Nasional XX, abbreviated as PON XX), also called PON XX Papua or PON Papua 2021, was the twentieth edition of the Indonesian National Sports Week, hosted by Papua. The event took place from 2 October to 15 October 2021. Lukas Enembe Stadium was the main venue for this edition, both the opening and closing ceremonies. This event was originally held in 2020, but was postponed to 2021 due to COVID-19 pandemic. [1] This edition was the first PON held in the province, [2] as well as in the Western New Guinea region and Eastern Indonesian Time areas.

Bids

Papua successfully defeated Bali and Aceh to host PON XX / 2020. Gaining the most votes in the voting for the prospective host of the National Sports Week (PON) XX in 2020 by winning 66 votes at the Annual Member Meeting of the National Sports Committee of Indonesia (KONI). [3]

The PON XX venues spread in one city and three regencies on Papua Provinces: Jayapura City, Jayapura Regency, Merauke Regency, and Mimika Regency. [4]

The 2020 edition featured more sports than the previous edition. Based on KONI Decree No. 100 of 2019, a total of 56 sports were competed in the games. [5] Previously, the central KONI determined a number of 47 sports to be competed, [6] but returned later to 56 according to the hosts ability. [7] Ten sports that were removed were cycling, bridge, dance, gateball, golf, petanque, water skiing, soft tennis, table tennis and woodball. [8] Meanwhile, electronic sports are also competed as an exhibition sport.

The Third Place Playoff of the 2007 AFC Asian Cup was held in this stadium. The football club Sriwijaya is based at the stadium.

Persatuan Sepakbola Indonesia Jayapura, or Persipura, is an Indonesian professional football club based in Jayapura, Papua. The club was founded in 1963 and currently competes in the Liga 2. Persipura used to always use the Mandala Stadium as their home and to compete in Liga 2 for the 2022–23 season, Persipura use Lukas Enembe Stadium. Persipura Papua is one of the giants of modern football in Indonesia with various league and tournament titles. Persipura is also known as the producer of great footballers from the land of Papua such as Rully Nere, Jack Komboy, Eduard Ivakdalam, Boaz Solossa, Ian Louis Kabes, and Imanuel Wanggai. Sports in Indonesia are popular from both the participation and spectating aspect. Some popular sports in Indonesia are football, futsal, basketball, volleyball, badminton, and the native Indonesian martial art pencak silat. Badminton is arguably Indonesia's most successful sport. Jayapura Regency is one of the regencies (kabupaten) in Papua Province of Indonesia. It is situated to the west of but does not include the city of Jayapura. Previously covering most of the north-east portion of Papua province, it was reduced substantially in extent from 12 November 2002, when the eastern districts were split off to form a new Keerom Regency and the western districts were split off to form a new Sarmi Regency. 2008 Pekan Olahraga National or the Indonesia National Games XVII were a major multi-sport event in Indonesia which took place in Samarinda, East Kalimantan from 5–17 July 2008. A total of 7,946 athletes participated in the biggest-ever Pekan Olahraga Nasional and also the first on the island of Borneo. These games make Samarinda the second city to host Pekan Olahraga Nasional outside of the island of Java and Sumatra, after Makassar hosted the 1957 Pekan Olahraga Nasional.

2012 Pekan Olahraga Nasional or 2012 National Sports Week was a multi-sport event in Indonesia which was held in Riau from 9–20 September 2012. The previous edition was held in East Kalimantan. Thousands of athletes, officials, and journalists all across of Indonesian provinces participated to the game.

2016 Pekan Olahraga Nasional is the nineteenth edition of Pekan Olahraga Nasional. It was held in Bandung, West Java in 2016. It was the first time for Indonesia's third largest city of Bandung to host the games in more than forty years. Bandung hosted the fifth edition of Pekan Olahraga Nasional in 1961.

Lukas Enembe was an Indonesian politician from West Papua, who served as the 13th Governor of Papua Province from April 2013 to January 2023. He had previously served as Regent of Puncak Jaya Regency between 2007 and 2012, and Vice Regent of the same regency from 2001 until 2006.

The 2021–22 Liga 3 is the sixth season of the Liga 3 under its current name, the seventh season under its current league structure, and the only amateur league football competition in Indonesia.
