Chevaan Devavarathan Daniel (born 11 May 1978) is a Sri Lankan former TV news anchor. He founded one of Sri Lanka's pioneering tech start-ups in the late 1990s. Today, he sits on the board of the Capital Maharaja Organization, one of Sri Lanka's largest diversified conglomerates. He is also known for his role in 'Gammadda', an award-winning rural development movement.
He is a Fulbright Scholar, Eisenhower Global Fellow (EF Special Award- UTC Fellowship,’17). Daniel was born to parents of mixed racial heritage. Having begun at several rural schools, he was admitted to S. Thomas' College, Mount Lavinia, in 1988. Chevaan is married to Raaidah Daniel ńee Wahab and together, they have a son, Chelian. He joined Capital Maharaja as a part-time typist in the newsroom. [15] [16]
He is Group Director at Capital Maharaja, which is Sri Lanka’s largest and most diversified privately held conglomerate. [17] He was one of the youngest ever to be appointed to the Main Board of the 80 year old conglomerate. [18]
He has consistently attributed his success to his mentor, R. Rajamahendran, the chairman and managing director of the Maharaja Organization. Early on, Daniel launched eezee2.com, Sri Lanka's first classified advertisement website, in 1998. [19] Daniel launched Sri Lanka's first ever SMS news alert service in 2000. He worked as a media coordinator to the Sri Lanka Cricket board for a period of two years, from 2000 to 2002, including a stint for the ICC.
Daniel also spent a few years working for the Victoria's Secret brand at MAS Holdings, under the tutelage of Dian Gomes. However, he is perhaps best known as an English news anchor on MTV Sri Lanka, becoming a household name in his early twenties. [20] [21] [22]
Chevaan spearheads Gammadda, a concept by R. Rajamahendran and perhaps Sri Lanka's largest rural development movement.
Daniel represented the Capital Maharaja Organization, at the World Humanitarian Summit (WHS) – Regional Consultation, which was held in Dushanbe, the capital of Tajikistan, in July 2015. [23] [24] [25] Subsequently he was invited by the United Nations for Global Consultation on Humanitarian Efforts which was held in Geneva, Switzerland, in October 2015. [26] Daniel was the Master of Ceremony for the duration of the WHS Global Consultation. [27] Daniel delivered an official statement at the United Nations World Humanitarian Summit in Istanbul, Turkey in May 2016. [28]
With a degree in economics and a master's degree in political science, he was selected as a Hubert H. Humphrey Fellow in 2010, [29] a part of the Fulbright Programme administered by the US State Department. He was admitted to the Walter Cronkite School of Journalism and Mass Communication at Arizona State University, where he specialized in digital media under Dr. Bill Silcock. While living in the US, he also worked for NBC and MSNBC in New York City in 2010 and 2011.
Daniel has been widely recognized for his rapid rise in the world of business in general and media in particular. In 2007 he was awarded the Most Outstanding Young Person of the Year award by Junior Chamber International. [30] [31] In 2012 and 2013, he was picked as one of Sri Lanka’s 40 Under 40 Business Leaders by Echelon Magazine. [32] In 2012, Daniel was also selected by the Asia Foundation to its Asia 21 list of young leaders. In 2013, he was awarded the Maharaja Gold Medal for Business Achievement. [33] He, was appointed to the Advisory Committee of the Asia Foundations flagship initiative, Asia 21, in May 2016, a group of global leaders selected from spheres including politics, Science, Business and Social Work. [34] In 2017, he was awarded the Eisenhower Fellowship – Multination Programme and awarded the first Eisenhower Special Award conferred on a Sri Lankan, the UTC Fellowship, 2017. In 2009, after his station was attacked and burned by unidentified gunmen, Daniel was interviewed on CNN about the incident. Soon after, he was placed under an investigation and tipped to be arrested. He was forced to make a dangerous exit out of Sri Lanka but returned within a week, and remained in Sri Lanka turning down many offers for asylum overseas. [39] [40] [41] [42] [43]
In 2010, he was famously 'hauled out' of Temple Trees for standing his ground against the then president, Mahinda Rajapaksa, when warned not to criticize the government. [44]
An avid composer, singer and lyricist, Chevaan has several English and Sinhalese singles to his name, most of which he has composed and sung himself. [45] [46] [47] He has also composed music for several national programmes including campaigns for peace and reconciliation. [48] [49] [50]
An amateur historian, specializing in the Anuradhapura period in Sri Lankan history, he recently published his first book on the subject, Island of Antiquity.

(help) [56] Sirasa TV is a digital, terrestrial television network in Sri Lanka. It is the sister channel of 'TV 1' which was established in 1992. Sirasa TV was started in 1998 as a sister to its radio network Sirasa FM. Sirasa TV is owned by the Sri Lankan business conglomerate, Capital Maharaja Group together with Gregson Holdings Ltd. Since then, another multi-national company - International Media Management - has also invested in MTV. It broadcasts its programs mainly in Sinhala.
Asoka Milinda Moragoda is a Sri Lankan politician and businessman. He is the current Sri Lankan High Commissioner Designate to India and, former Cabinet Minister and Member of Parliament representing the Colombo District from 2001 to 2010, who served as the Minister of Justice and Law Reform (2009-2010), Minister of Tourism (2007–2009); Minister for Economic Reform, Science and Technology and Deputy Minister for Plan Implementation and Development (2002–2004). Tan Sri Jemilah binti Mahmood is a Malaysian physician. Before joining the IFRC, she served as Chief of the Secretariat of the World Humanitarian Summit at the United Nations in New York, heading the humanitarian branch at the United National Population Fund, Chief of the Humanitarian Response Branch at UNFPA in 2011, President of the Malaysian Medical Relief Society from its foundation in June 1999 to a decade later in 2009. Mercy Malaysia is a medical charity she founded in June 1999, inspired by the Médecins Sans Frontières. In 2008, she was one of the 16 members appointed by Ban Ki-moon, the former Secretary-General of the United Nations to Advisory Group of the Central Emergency Response Fund.

News 1st primarily broadcasts news, live on three TV channels (Sirasa TV, Shakthi TV, TV 1, five radio channels, three websites in Sinhala, English & Tamil languages, and social media platforms.
Abhaya Induruwa is the inaugural Professor V K Samaranayake Endowed Professor of Computing, University of Colombo School of Computing, Sri Lanka. Having served as the Director of Cyber Innovation Hub he recently retired from the Canterbury Christ Church University in the United Kingdom where he researched into security and forensic investigation of Internet of Things (IoT). Currently he is engaged in promoting IoT in digital agriculture as a disruptive technology, primarily in developing countries, leading to smart agriculture resulting in higher yields in food production. Induruwa is considered the father of Internet in Sri Lanka.
Asanga Abeyagoonasekera is a Sri Lankan academic, geopolitics and foreign policy analyst. He is a political columnist and author. He is a visiting professor for geopolitics and global leadership at Northern Kentucky University and a visiting lecturer in International Political Economy for The University of London in Sri Lanka Royal Institute of Colombo and teaches at the International Security at University of Colombo. Abeyagoonasekera has more than a decade of experience in government administration, serving as the head of several government institutions to positions at the board level. His commentaries on International Relations and Geopolitics are published by Observer Research Foundation New Delhi, London School of Economics and South Asia Journal. Abeyagoonasekera writes the monthly column Dateline Colombo for IPCS think tank in New Delhi.

Dinesh Subasinghe is a Sri Lankan composer, violinist, and music producer. He composed Karuna Nadee, a Buddhist oratorio, and re-introduced a lost, ancient musical instrument known as the ravanahatha to Sri Lanka. He is also a film and television composer whose works integrate western and eastern classical music with electronic music, Buddhist music, folk music, traditional orchestral arrangements, and world music genres. From 2002 to 2009 he led the pop classical band, Dee R Cee Members.
Nalaka Godahewa, MP is a Sri Lankan politician, former Cabinet Minister, and former corporate executive. He served as the Minister of Mass Media from the 18th of April 2022 until his resignation on the 9th of May 2022. Prior to that he was the State Minister Urban Development since August 2020 In addition to this, he is a member of parliament for the Gampaha District. He had served as the Chairman, Securities Exchange Commission ; Chairman, Sri Lanka Tourism (2010–2012); and Managing Director, Sri Lanka Insurance (2006–2009).
Soma Edirisinghe was a Sri Lankan corporate executive, film producer, philanthropist and social worker. She was born in Meegoda, Sri Lanka on 5 July 1939 to a family of nine daughters, and died on 5 November 2015 at a private hospital in Colombo. She was married to EAP Edirisinghe and they had four children: three sons, Jeewaka, Nalaka and Asanka, and a daughter, Deepa.

He is Professor of Leadership and Organizational Behavior at the International Institute for Management Development (IMD) business school based in Lausanne Switzerland and the author of the award-winning book Hostage at the Table: How Leaders Can Overcome Conflict, Influence Others and Raise Performance (2006) and co-author of Care to Dare: Unleashing Astonishing Performance through Secure Base Leadership (2012).He is also known for his use of the hostage metaphor in business and leadership development.

He worked and lived in Europe conducting various architectural and innovation design projects. Since 2000 he has been working as an Industrial Humanitarian Designer, identifying, designing, developing and implementing innovative solutions in countries in South America and abroad, including China, Austria, Spain, France, United Arab Emirates.
Rizwe Mohammed is the President of All Ceylon Jamiyyathul Ulama. Since 2003, Mufti M.I.M. Rizwe has been the President of All Ceylon Jamiyyathul Ulama (ACJU), the supreme body of Islamic Theologians in Sri Lanka, inaugurated in 1924, incorporated by the Parliamentary Act No. 51 of 2000.
Suranga Nanayakkara is a Sri Lankan born computer scientist and inventor. As of 2021, he is the director of Augmented Human Lab and associate professor at the National University of Singapore. Before moving to Auckland in 2018, he was an assistant professor at Singapore University of Technology and Design. He is best known for his work on FingerReader and Haptic Chair. His research interests include Wearable Computing, Assistive Technology, Ubiquitous computing, AI, Collective intelligence and Robotics. MIT Technology Review honored Nanayakkara as one of the Innovators Under 35 for Asia Pacific Region 2014.

He is the co-founder of the Igarapé Institute and the SecDev Group, where he is known for his work on urbanization, crime prevention, arms control, migration, cyber-security, the digital economy, conflict and development studies. Piyavi Wijewardene is a Sri Lankan researcher, lecturer, author and the chief executive officer of the Odiliya Group. He is the former Director of Institute of Human Capital Development and one of the Examiners at Sri Lanka Institute of Development Administration. He is a member of the Academy for Global Business Advancement and the Chapter President, Sri Lanka at the International Management Research and Technology Consortium. He served as the Head of Academics at the Management and Science University. He was instead worked as an executive officer at the Capital Maharaja Organization.

Martin Roll is a Danish author, brand strategist and management consultant. Roll appears regularly in global television and print media. He holds an MBA from INSEAD where he is a Distinguished Fellow and an Entrepreneur in Residence. Roll's first book, Asian Brand Strategy, was named one of the "Best Business Books: Marketing" in 2006 by Strategy+Business magazine. He is the founder CEO of Martin Roll Company, an advisory firm based in Singapore. He advises Fortune 500 companies, Asian firms, family-owned businesses and also served as a senior advisor to McKinsey & Company.
Shameer Rasooldeen, is a Sri Lankan business person, journalist and a television news anchor. Shameer is the current host of Sri Lanka's only English Language current affairs program Face the Nation telecast on TV1. He currently holds the position of Group Director at the Capital Maharaja Organisation and currently heads the export arm of the Group, AF Jones Exporters Ceylon Private Limited. He is currently the youngest sitting member of the Capital Maharaja Organisation’s Board of Directors and the first appointment of Sashi Rajamahendran, after he took up the post of Chairman/Managing Director of Capital Maharaja. He has won two international awards and filed over 50 stories for CNN and Channel News Asia. Shameer is a CNN Fellow, Chevening fellow at St. Cross College University of Oxford and also a Dag Hammersjkold fellow.
5th Summit of the Non-Aligned Movement on 16–19 August 1976 in Colombo, Sri Lanka was the conference of Heads of State or Government of the Non-Aligned Movement. 86 nations participated in the summit with additional 30 observers and guests representing all the continents in the world. The Summit is the biggest international conference ever held in Sri Lanka and one of the greatest achievements in its foreign policy. The event took place at the Bandaranaike Memorial International Conference Hall, the first purpose-built conference hall in Asia. It was the first heads of state or government summit of the movement to be organized in Asia. The decisions on the NAM Coordination Bureau organisation and membership conditions were formally defined at the Colombo Summit. The body was to have 25 members and was expected to meet regularly at the United Nations Headquarters in New York City.
