Chief was a four-person band from Santa Monica, California, stationed in Los Angeles, California. Chief has released three singles entitled "Mighty Proud," "Breaking Walls", and "Night and Day," as well as an EP called "The Castle Is Gone" and their debut and only full album, Modern Rituals. All of these releases (except for the EP which was released under their own record label) have been via Domino Records. [1] They have been compared to bands such as Coldplay and Local Natives by The New York Times . The Times goes on to say "Mr. Koga can sound like the young Tom Petty." [2] Other reviews of Chief have similarly been generally good. On June 14, 2011, they played their farewell show at The Troubadour [3] but began performing together again one year later. [4]

History

Beginning: 2008–2009

All four band members grew up in Los Angeles and attended school at New York University. [5] When they first got to know each other, they were all working on various projects. [1]

Before releasing any albums as Chief, they toured extensively. Their first EP, The Castle Is Gone, was self-released in 2008. [6] The EP was reviewed positively by HearYa, who stated, "I am loving this band." [7]

Their first single as well as first piece to be signed to Domino Records, "Mighty Proud", was released on November 17, 2009. [8] The Fader stated, "they’ve earned their stripes (or patterns), with smoky hooks and group singalongs of tracks tailor-made for union rallies." [9]

2010

In 2010, Chief continued to tour extensively, and released two singles and a full album. "Night And Day" was released on June 22, 2010, by Domino Records. [10] Listen Before You Buy compares the "rich, layered" vocals to that of Band Of Horses. [11]

"Breaking Walls" was released on June 29, again by Domino Records. [12] This single was described by Contactmusic.com as "very melodic, has a lovely light jangly guitar loop paired with the occasionally subdued use of power chords backed by some very pert percussion," the vocals being "Verve like." [13]

Their only album, Modern Rituals, was released on August 17, 2010, on Domino Records. [14] Modern Rituals received average reviews. Rolling Stone gave the album 3 stars, [15] and Spin gave them a 5 out of 10. [16] Pitchfork Media gave the album a 5.2, stating, "Chief seem more or less like a bunch of hippies", and "Chief are rarely better than competent at anything they try to do here". [17] The album also received positive reviews. Filter stated, "Considering how they got signed to Domino Records without even having a full length album makes you think, “Hey, these guys must be good.” In Modern Rituals, they prove exactly that." [14] Paste gave the album a 7.2. [18]

Break-up and reunion

On June 14, 2011, they played their farewell show at The Troubadour, [3] shortly after announcing their breakup, which they said was "due to creative and personal differences." [19]

In July 2012, Evan Koga announced via Twitter that Chief had reunited. They have resumed performing, mostly in the Los Angeles area. [4]

The Explosion is an American punk rock band from Boston, Massachusetts. On February 13, 2007, the band announced that they had left Virgin Records, and on April 30, 2007, that they were to split up. On June 5, the band announced plans for two last shows in Philadelphia, and New York.

Pram (band)

Pram are a British post-rock band formed in Birmingham, England in 1988 by Rosie Cuckston, Matt Eaton (guitar), Andy Weir (drums), and Samantha Owen (bass). Subsequent lineups have changed frequently, most notably with Cuckston's departure in 2008. Their electronic pop sound, described by AllMusic as "equally quaint and unsettling," employs unconventional instruments and draws on stylistic influences such as krautrock, exotica, and dub.

Adam Carson American musician

Adam Alexander Carson is the drummer of the alternative rock band AFI. He and Davey Havok are the two original members left in the lineup. Carson also filled in as drummer for the psychobilly band Tiger Army. His drumming can be found on Tiger Army's Early Years EP as well as their debut album Tiger Army. Carson was also a member of Influence 13 – a band formed by Nick 13, Jade Puget, Geoff Kresge, and two other friends.

Nick DVirgilio

Nicholas D'Virgilio often referred to as NDV, is an American drummer and multi-instrumentalist musician, best known as a member of the progressive rock band Spock's Beard. He was also one of two drummers chosen to replace Phil Collins in Genesis on the Calling All Stations album. He has also done session work with many artists including Tears for Fears and Mystery, and is an official member of Big Big Train.

The Atomic Bitchwax

The Atomic Bitchwax is an American rock band from New Jersey, formed in 1992 by bassist/singer/songwriter Chris Kosnik, guitarist Ed Mundell, and drummer Keith Ackerman. They did not release their first full-length album until 1999, upon signing with Tee Pee Records. Mixing elements of 1960s psychedelic rock and 1970s riff rock filtered through modern progressive rock, their music has appeared in popular TV shows including Jackass, Homewrecker, and various Fox Sports broadcasts.

<i>Paper Walls</i> 2007 studio album by Yellowcard

Paper Walls is the sixth studio album by American pop punk band Yellowcard, released on July 17, 2007. This is also the first Yellowcard album with Ryan Mendez, their last with Peter Mosely, and their last studio album to be released through Capitol Records. The album was recorded at Ocean Studios in Burbank, California and was mixed at South Beach Studios in Miami, Florida.

Bill Ryder-Jones

William Edward Ryder-Jones is an English singer-songwriter, musician, music producer and composer from West Kirby, Merseyside. He co-founded the band The Coral, together with James Skelly, Lee Southall, Paul Duffy, and Ian Skelly, playing as their lead guitarist from 1996 until 2008. He has since pursued a solo career, writing both his own albums and film scores, as well as producing records for other artists and appearing as a session musician.

Peggy Sue is an English indie pop/indie folk band from Brighton. The band has toured with a number of well-known indie artists including Mumford & Sons, The Maccabees, First Aid Kit, Kate Nash, and Jack White.

Fall Be Kind is the fourth EP by American experimental pop band Animal Collective. It was released digitally in MP3 and WAV formats on November 23, 2009, and as both a CD and LP in the United Kingdom on December 14, 2009 and in the United States on December 15, 2009. Some stores in Australia and New Zealand began selling it more than a week earlier, due to the band's touring presence there at the time.

Wendy Fonarow

Tennis (band)

Tennis is an American indie pop band from Denver, Colorado, United States, made up of husband-and-wife duo Alaina Moore and Patrick Riley. The duo formed in 2010, and released their debut album, Cape Dory, in 2011. Their second album, Young & Old, was released the following year. Their third release, Ritual in Repeat (2014), was released on Communion records. The band's fourth album, Yours Conditionally, was released in 2017, followed by Swimmer in 2020. Swimmer was named one of the best albums of 2020 by USA Today.

<i>No One Can Ever Know</i>

No One Can Ever Know is the third studio album by Scottish indie rock band The Twilight Sad, released by FatCat Records on 6 February 2012 in the UK, and a day later in the US. The album was produced by the band with assistance and advice from producer Andrew Weatherall, who helped the band in experimenting with analog synthesizers. No One Can Ever Know marks a shift in the band's "wall of sound" approach towards a darker, more industrial-influenced sound. Guitarist Andy MacFarlane describes the album's sound as "sparser... with a colder, slightly militant feel," influenced by artists such as Siouxsie and the Banshees, Can, Public Image Ltd, Fad Gadget, Cabaret Voltaire, Wire, Bauhaus, Magazine and D.A.F..

Turnpike Troubadours is an American country music group from Oklahoma founded in 2005. They started their own imprint, Bossier City Records, in 2007 and have released five studio albums. Their self-titled 2015 album peaked at number 17 on the Billboard 200.

<i>Built for Blame, Laced with Shame</i> 2012 EP by Get Scared

Built For Blame, Laced With Shame is the fourth and final EP by American post-hardcore band Get Scared, released on August 28, 2012, through Grey Area Records. The album was produced by Erik Ron. It is the only EP without lead vocalist Nicholas Matthews and the only album with Joel Faviere after Matthews departed in late 2011 but later rejoined the band in late 2012.

Hookworms were an English five-piece neo-psychedelic rock band from Leeds/Halifax that formed in 2010. During that time the band released 3 studio albums and became known for their live shows.

The Colourist American rock band

The Colourist is an American rock band from Orange County, California formed in 2009 by Adam Castilla, Maya Tuttle, Justin Wagner, and Kollin Johannsen. The band has been inactive since Tuttle's departure in December 2016.

Mighty Oaks (band)

Mighty Oaks are an indie/folk rock trio made up of Ian Hooper (US), Claudio Donzelli (Italy) and Craig Saunders (UK). They formed in 2010 and are based in Berlin. According to Allmusic, the group releases "tight, three-part harmonies and effusive, largely acoustic-driven folk anthems." In early 2014 they released their first LP, Howl, on Universal Records. The album peaked at No. 10 on the Official German charts with several singles charting as well. They have since released a second LP, Dreamers (2017), and an EP, Storm (2017). On the 7th of February 2020, they released their third full-length album, All Things Go.

Oliver Houston was an American emo band from Grand Rapids, Michigan.
