The office of the Governor of Abia State is an elected position. The governor of Abia State is the chief executive of the state and its executive branch. Eight different people have served as governor of Abia State since the state was created on August 27, 1991. The current governor is Okezie Ikpeazu of the People's Democratic Party, in office since May 29, 2015.

Isuikwuato is a local government area in Abia State in southeastern Nigeria. The name Isu-Ikwu-Ato translates from Igbo as 'three Isu families or lineage' and refers to the three lineages descended from the Isu people, in what is now a local government area. The three brothers are Imenyi which was Considered the Eldest, Oguduasaa the second eldest and their younger sibling Isuamawo, these three major clans which also harbours some various communities in each of them makes up the present day Isuikwuato.It has an estimated population of over 50,000 people. Isuikwuato has natural resources such as iron ore and kaolin. Oil lines flow through Isuikwuato and there have been cases of burst pipe which have had severe effects on the local economy and environment. The major cash crops are palm oil and cassava. The soil at Isuikwuato is loose and suffers from Erosion and this left some dangerous erosion sites in the area. They lack the needed government backing to build drainages around the area to guide the flow of water without further harming the already crying soil. Blessed with hills and highlands, the town will appreciate water infrastructures because water is an important but hard resource to get in Isuikwuato. Isuikwuato is also home to Abia State University Uturu.
Rear Admiral (retired) Ndubuisi Godwin Kanu was appointed military governor of Imo State, Nigeria in March 1976 during the military regime of General Olusegun Obasanjo. He was the first governor after the decree that established the state from part of the old East Central State. He was transferred to become governor of Lagos State in 1977, leaving office in July 1978.

Alex Otti is a Nigerian economist, banker, investor, philanthropist and politician. Otti is the former Group Managing Director of Diamond Bank Plc, a leading retail financial institution in Nigeria. Otti was a gubernatorial candidate of Abia State on the platform of All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA). On 31 December 2015, The Court of Appeal which sat in Owerri removed Okezie Ikpeazu of the Peoples Democratic Party as governor of Abia State and declared Alex Otti of the All Progressives Grand Alliance, the winner of the April 11 and April 25 Governorship elections in the state. However, on February 3, 2016, the Supreme Court of Nigeria reversed the verdict of the Court of Appeal and affirmed the election of Ikpeazu as Governor. Dr. Otti is a member of the editorial board of one of the most respected newspapers in Nigeria, Thisday, and writes a fortnightly column, every other Monday, titled "Outside The Box".

The Speaker of the Abia State House of Assembly is the political head of the Abia State legislative who serves as the preciding officer of the Abia State House of Assembly. The Speaker is elected by Members of the House with the sole responsibilities of conducting meetings of the House, appointing committees and enforcing the Rules of the House. The current speaker is Chikwendu Kanu, a People's Democratic Party member who was sworn in on 30 December 2016, succeeding Kennedy Njoku.
Nwannekaenyi "Nnamdi" Kenny Okwu Kanu is a British-Nigerian political activist. He is a leading member of one of several Biafran separatist organisations, the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), which advocates a sovereign state for the Igbo speaking people of Nigeria as well as those from the south-south region of Nigeria. Kanu is the director of a London-based radio station named; Radio Biafra. Kanu was arrested on treason charges in Lagos on 14 October 2015 and was detained in a Nigerian jail without trial for more than a year-and-a-half, despite various court orders that ruled for his release. When in court, Kanu appeared regularly wearing a Jewish prayer shawl and head covering. He said in court that he "believes in Judaism" and considers himself a Jew. On 28 April 2017 Kanu was released from prison on bail.
The Abia State gubernatorial election, 2015 was the fifth gubernatorial election of Abia State. Held on April 25, 2015, the People's Democratic Party nominee Okezie Ikpeazu won the election, defeating Alex Otti of the All Progressives Grand Alliance.
Nkechi Caroline Ikpeazu is the wife of the current Governor of Abia State located in the southeast of Nigeria.
