Henry Chimunthu Banda is a Malawian politician who was the Speaker of the National Assembly of Malawi from May 2009 to May 2014. [1] He was elected in 2009 as the Chair of the 19 member Commonwealth Parliamentary Association,Africa region. [2]
He also served for a time as Minister of Energy and Minister of Mining,Youth Sports and Culture.
Banda is from Chipembere village in Nkhotakota District,Central Malawi. [1] He received a Diploma in Education obtained from the University of Malawi in 1984. Subsequently,he earned a Diploma in Education Management which he acquired from Brandon University. He joined the Ministry of Education as a Diploma teacher in 1985 and was posted to Euthini Secondary School in Northern Malawi until May 1989. He was posted to his home district of Nkhotakota where he rose to become headteacher of the school. In 1993-1995,he became the Regional Publications Officer for the National Teachers Union of Malawi.
At the 1999 general elections,Hon C Banda was elected as Member of Parliament for the Nkhotakota North Constituency,and from August 1999 to September 2001,he was Chairman of the Parliamentary Committee on the Environment. From January 2000 to September 2001,he was Commissioner in the Parliamentary Service Commission and subsequently Minister of Mines,Natural Resources and Environmental Affairs. In June 2004 he was appointed as the Minister of Youth,Sports and Culture. [3] He also served as Minister of Energy and Mining and helped to secure the Paladin Energy mining deal with Goodall Gondwe. [4] He also served as Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs. [5]
Chimunthu-Banda is married and has three children with whom he and his wife reside with in Lilongwe. [6]

The History of Malawi covers the area of present-day Malawi. The region was once part of the Maravi Empire. In colonial times,the territory was ruled by the British,under whose control it was known first as British Central Africa and later Nyasaland. It became part of the Federation of Rhodesia and Nyasaland. The country achieved full independence,as Malawi,in 1964. After independence,Malawi was ruled as a one-party state under Hastings Banda until 1994.
Hastings Kamuzu Banda was the prime minister and later president of Malawi from 1964 to 1994. In 1966,the country became a republic and he became the first president as a result.

John Zenus Ungapake Tembo is a Malawian politician who served for years as President of the Malawi Congress Party (MCP). Tembo comes from the Dedza District in central Malawi,and he is a teacher by profession. She is the founder and leader of the People's Party,created in 2011. An educator and grassroots women's rights activist,she was the Minister of Foreign Affairs from 2006 to 2009 and the Vice-President of Malawi from May 2009 to April 2012. She had served in various roles as a member of Parliament and as Minister of Gender and Child Welfare before she became the President of the Republic of Malawi.

Augustine Bwanausi was born in Malawi,then called Nyasaland,in 1930 and trained as a science teacher,but was also politically active in the Nyasaland African Congress,campaigning for the end of colonial rule. In March 1959,a State of Emergency was declared,and Bwanausi was arrested as a leading Congress member and detained until 1960. On his release,he joined the Malawi Congress Party and in 1961 was elected to the Legislative Council,becoming Minister of Internal Affairs and Development in the same year. In 1963,he became Minister of Works. In 1964,there was a confrontation between Banda and most of his ministers,which led to the sacking of Bwanausi and two of his cabinet colleagues in September 1964. Three other cabinet ministers resigned in sympathy,and although Banda was willingness to re-instate Bwanausi and one or two other ministers,their insistence on all be reinstated ended any hope of a reconciliation. In October 1964,Bwanausi left Malawi for Zambia,where he resumed teaching,and was active in Malawian exile politics until his death in a car accident in 1968
