Vincent Mwasia Mutua (born November 1, 1990), [1] known professionally as Chipukeezy, is a Kenyan comedian, radio presenter, and MC. He rose to prominence when he joined the cast of the Churchill Show in 2013. In 2018, Chipukeezy ventured into hosting his own show, the Chipukeezy Show, which aired on Ebru TV until 2019. [2] Notably, in 2021 he was elected as the Vice Chairperson of the National Authority for the Campaign Against Drug Abuse (NACADA). [3]

Early life and education

After high school, he participated in local theater productions, acting in adaptations of popular literary works. He gained recognition as the warm seat narrator for the entertainment show "Heartstrings," with eight appearances, and was invited twice to the hot seat for two-hour segments. [4]

He later joined East African School of Media Studies.

Career

In 2013, Chipukeezy joined the Churchill Show, a renowned comedy show that aired on NTV. He established a notable presence through his performances and became a regular participant in subsequent episodes of the show.

Chipukeezy hosted East Africa's Comedy Tuesday, a notable comedy event held at the Kenya National Theatre in Nairobi in 2016. The event featured a lineup of East African comedians, including Eric Omondi, Dr Ofweneke, Eddie Butita, Idris Sultan, and Captain Khalid from Tanzania. [5]

He later departed from Churchill Show and embarked on a new venture by establishing his own television show, titled "Chipukeezy Show," which aired on the Kenyan TV channel Ebru TV. [6] The show garnered substantial success, spanning multiple seasons and serving as a platform for Kenyan youth and artists. Notably, it played a pivotal role in catapulting the careers of artists such as Stevo Simple Boy. In 2019, a disagreement arose between him and Ebru TV, prompting the show to make a transition to TV47 Kenya. [2]

Chipukeezy co-hosted the 2017 African Muzik Magazine Awards, AFRIMMA, alongside Nigerian Comedian Basketmouth in Dallas. [7]

In 2018, Chipukeezy was appointed as a member of the Board of Directors at the National Authority for the Campaign Against Drug Abuse (NACADA) [8] by the then Kenyan President Uhuru Kenyatta. [9] In 2021, he was elected the Vice Chairperson of the Authority. [10]

He was nominated for the Best Africa's Comedian Category alongside Eric Omondi at the African Entertainment Awards USA (AEUSA) in 2018. [11]

In 2021, Chipukeezy embarked on "The Celebrity Fish Tour USA," a tour held in the United States and hosted by Nigerian comedian Patrick Onyeke. The tour spanned four months and featured performances by a group of African comedians. During his time on the tour, Chipukeezy had the opportunity to meet and engage with renowned American comedians, such as Katt Williams and Mark Curry. [12] In 2023, he relaunched the ChipukeezyShow.

Personal life

In 2018, Chipukeezy and his fiancé Vivian Mandera, popularly known as Empress Kerry, ended their engagement and parted ways after a three-year relationship. [13]

His grandfather, Kilian Kakonzi Kithui, died in 2019. [14] The news of his grandfather's passing was met with condolences from various individuals, including the then Deputy President William Ruto. [15]

Daniel Wambua Ndambuki famously known as Churchill is a Kenyan comedian who hosts the comedy television show Churchill Show on TV47 Kenya Kenya on Sundays. Churchill was born in Kitui town, but moved to Machakos. He has worked in the comedy industry since 1996 and has now become a household name in Kenya. He launched the Churchill Live Comedy Show in September 2008 but was renamed Churchill Show during its third season in 2012. The show has given a platform to hundreds of comedians in the country, the most successful ones being Eric Omondi, Teacher Wanjiku, Professor Hammo, MCA Tricky, Jemutai, Magazine and Dr. Kingori.

The inauguration of Uhuru Kenyatta as the 4th president of Kenya took place on 9 April 2013. Kenyatta won 50.07% of the vote in the 2013 presidential election, after the supreme court dismissed the Raila petition on 30 March 2013. According to Article 141 (2) (b) of the constitution, in case the Supreme Court upholds the victory of the president-elect, the swearing in will take place on "the first Tuesday following the seventh day following the date on which the court renders a decision declaring the election to be valid." In 2019 he rose to fame after he released his song "Mihadarati" where he was addressing the dangers of drugs. This came after his appearance in Ebru TV's "Chipukeezy Show"

The 2021 All Africa Music Awards, were held on November 21, at the Eko Convention Centre in Lagos, Nigeria. This marked the fifth time in eight years that the venue is hosting the show. The show was hosted by South African actress Pearl Thusi, and British-Congolese comedian Eddie Kadi.

Eric Omondi is a Kenyan comedian and actor. He made his comedy debut in Churchill Show, a comedy show that airs on NTV in 2008. He has since won three African Entertainment Awards USA for 'Best Comedian' in 2018, 2019 and 2020.
