Chitrangada Satarupa is an Indian actress who appears predominantly in Hindi and Bengali cinema. She is known for starring in the critically acclaimed films Tikli and Laxmi Bomb (2017), Tottaa Pataaka Item Maal (2018) and Devi Aur Hero (2019). [1]

Early and personal life

Chitrangada Satarupa was born as Chitrangada Chakraborty [2] on August 19 [3] to Satarupa Sanyal and Utpalendu Chakrabarty in Kolkata, West Bengal. She studied mass communications at St. Xavier's College, Kolkata. [4] She then moved to Mumbai, joined the theater, and did plays for years. Her first play was Colorblind of which Kalki Koechlin was also a part. [5]

She married her longtime boyfriend, Sambit Chatterjee. [6]

Career

Chitrangada debuted in Bengali films with Antore Bahire (2012). She then appeared in the television series Stories by Rabindranath Tagore (2015), directed by Anurag Basu and based on the novels and short stories of the Nobel Laureate, Rabindranath Tagore. She played Mrinmayi, a gamine and flamboyant young woman who struggles with the lack of choice women have in her society. [7] She next starred in the critically acclaimed Tikli and Laxmi Bomb (2017), [8] directed by Aditya Kripalani and based on his novel of the same name. [9] The film revolves around two sex workers who come together to run a cooperative and eliminate the middlemen in sex work. She played one of the protagonists of the film, Putul, a young Bengali woman who joins the streets of Mumbai as a sex worker. [10] She received praise for her performance, and the film was showcased at several film festivals. [11] The film won best feature at the London Asian Film Festival 2018 and the Berlin Independent Film Festival 2018. [12] [13]

She then appeared in Bikas Mishra's Pagla Ghoda (2017). [14] [15] She starred in Aditya Kripalani's Tottaa Pataaka Item Maal (2018) which met with critical acclaim. [16] [17] Set in Delhi, four women from various parts of the region meet by chance in a ladies only taxi ride and get into an altercation with a man who's teasing them. They end up kidnapping him and breaking him physically and mentally to send out a message. [18] She then played the role of Titli in Ahare Mon (2018), a girl fighting a terminal disease [19] and shaved her head to portray the role. [20] The Film companion cited the film as the best Bengali film of the year. [21]

In 2019, she appeared in an important role in Shantilal O Projapoti Rohoshyo . [22] She then starred in Devi Aur Hero, directed by Aditya Kripalani marking their third collaboration. [23] The film is about Kaali Ghosh, a young woman from rural Bengal played by Satarupa, who is the sex slave of an industrialist's son in suburban Mumbai. [24] She appeared in the bilingual medical mystery web series adapted from Indranil Sanyal's novel Karkat Kranti. Set against the backdrop of the heinous world of anti cancer drug trials, [25] she received praise for her role as Beas Chatterjee. [26]

In 2022, she starred in the webseries Guilty Minds playing a significant role [27] and receiving applause. [28] Her film Mariam (2023) was screened at the Busan International Film Festival. [29] Directed by Arvind Pratap, the film dealt with illegal surrogacy in India. [30]
