Chittagong Shrine Robbery refers to a robbery of an Islamic shrine in Chittagong by officers of Rapid Action Battalion, a paramilitary unit of Bangladesh, in 2011.

History

On 4 November 2011, Colonel Zulfiqar Ali Majumder led members of his unit, Rapid Action Battalion-7, to Talsara Darbar Sharif and robbed the compound keeping the pir at gunpoint. [1] [2] They stole 27 million BDT from the shrine. [3] Four months later, a driver of the shrine sued 10 members of Rapid Action Battalion and two informants for the robbery. [1] Rapid Action Battalion, a composite force, returned the 10 personnel to their respective military units after an international probe found them involved in the robbery. [1] Colonel Zulfiqar Ali Majumder was posted to Army Training and Doctrine Command. [1]

In April 2012, Squadron Leader Mamun Ur Rashid, who was tasked with investigating the robbery and Flight Lieutenant Mahmudul Hasan as part of an investigation by Bangladesh Air Force was found dead in Silver Inn in Chittagong. [4]

Bangladesh Police arrested Zulfiqar Ali Majumder on 4 May 2012 for his involvement in the shrine robbery and after he was sacked from Bangladesh Army after an army investigation found him guilty. [1] He and six others were sued in the shrine robbery case. [5] Flight Lt Sheikh Mahmudul Hasan, an accused in the case, [5] moved a petition in front of the Bangladesh High Court to squash the case but was denied by the High Court Division in 2016. [6] The trial in the robbery case began in September 2017. [7]

M Ilias Ali was a Bangladeshi politician and member of the Jatiya Sangsad (2001–2006) representing the Sylhet-2 constituency. He served as the organising secretary of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party. He, along with his personal car driver, Ansar Ali, went missing on 18 April 2012. Later that day, local police recovered his abandoned car near his residence in Banani neighborhood and found Ansar's cellphone inside. They have not been seen since. On the tenth anniversary of his disappearance, Netra News, an independent news platform in Sweden, reported on 21 April 2022, that Rapid Action Battalion (RAB), an elite Bangladeshi police unit, had carried out the disappearance. The platform cited leaked confidential documents and internal investigations documents from RAB to reach the conclusion.

Enforced disappearances in Bangladesh are cases in which the Government of Bangladesh directly or indirectly kidnaps people and holds them incommunicado. According to a Dhaka-based human rights group Odhikar, at least 402 people have become victim of enforced disappearance from 2009 to 2017 under the former Awami League administration. These incidents along with extrajudicial killings in Bangladesh has been criticized by The United Nations and human rights groups including Human Rights Watch and Amnesty International. Rapid Action Battalion (RAB), a special paramilitary unit in Bangladesh, is alleged to be behind most of these disappearances even though RAB claimed these allegations to be false and contemporaneous government of shaikh haseena now exiled denied all allegation imperiously. ref name=":5">Khan, Aina. Gulzar Uddin Ahmed, also known as Colonel Gulzar Ahmed, was the founding director of the intelligence wing and also served Additional Director General of Rapid Action Battalion. Until his death, he was a Colonel of the Bangladesh Army and also Sector Commander and Deputy Director General of Bangladesh Rifles.

Ziaul Ahsan is a former Bangladesh Army officer. He is the former Director General of National Telecommunication Monitoring Centre (NTMC). Prior to join NTMC, he was a Director at National Security Intelligence. He previously served as the Additional Director General (ADG) of Rapid Action Battalion (RAB). Ahsan has been sacked from the service on 6 August 2024 on the ground for involving with various heinous crimes including enforced disappearances and murders. He had been replaced as NTMC director general by Major General ASM Ridwanur Rahman.

Benazir Ahmed is a retired Bangladeshi police officer who served as the 28th Inspector General of Bangladesh Police. Prior to his appointment as IGP, he served as the Director General of Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) from January 2015 to April 2020. He is currently on a US sanctions list due to RAB's alleged role in forcibly disappearing citizens since December 2021.

Hasinur Rahman Bir Protik is a former Bangladesh Army and Rapid Action Battalion officer. He had the rank of Lieutenant Colonel when he was sacked from the army. He was a victim of forced disappearance in Bangladesh and had been missing for 16 months.

The Shah Jalal Dargah is the shrine and burial place of the 14th century Muslim saint Shah Jalal, located in Sylhet, Bangladesh. The site, known as a dargah, was originally constructed c. 1500, though many additions and alterations were made to its structures over the following centuries. It became a religious centre in the region, respected across multiple ruling administrations and greatly venerated among Bengalis, with local folklore and legends developing around it. The extensive surrounding compound serves several functions and includes four mosques, a religious school and a public cemetery among others. The Dargah is presently the largest and most visited religious site in Bangladesh.

Abul Fayez Muhammad Khalid Hossain is a Bangladeshi Islamic scholar and currently serves as the Adviser for Religious Affairs in the Yunus interim government since 8 August 2024. His appointment marks the first time an Islamic scholar has held this advisory role in Bangladesh. He is also the Vice President of Hefazat-e-Islam Bangladesh and serves as the Education Adviser for Islami Andolan Bangladesh. He previously held the position of President of Islami Chhatra Samaj, the student wing of the Nizam-e-Islam Party. In academia, he is a visiting professor at the International Islamic University Chittagong and has previously served as an adjunct professor at the Asian University of Bangladesh. He was also the head of the Department of Islamic History and Culture at Omargani M.E.S. College. His editorial roles include serving as the editor of the monthly journal At-Tawheed and assistant editor of Balagh al-Sharq. He serves as a columnist for four national newspapers and has authored over two hundred research articles in a range of journals, including The Muslim World League Journal. He has published 20 books and was a key figure in editing volumes 3 to 9 of the second edition of the Islami Bishwakosh and the Sirat Encyclopedia, both published by the Islamic Foundation Bangladesh.

Banaj Kumar Majumder is a Bangladeshi retired police officer. He was Additional IGP of Bangladesh Police and former Chief of the Police Bureau of Investigation. Prior to join PBI, he was Additional Commissioner of Chattogram Metropolitan Police in the rank of Additional DIG. He came into limelight when he was SP of Cox's Bazar District.

Mohammad Anwar Latif Khan is a retired Bangladesh Army Colonel and former Sector Commander of Border Guards Bangladesh in Rajshahi. He is the former Additional Director General (Operations) at the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) an elite multi-service unit of the Bangladesh Police and oversaw crackdowns on Islamist militants. He has been sanctioned by the United States for his activities in RAB. He had previously commanded RAB-5, RAB-7, and RAB-11.
