Choi Jong-il (born November 5, 1965) is a South Korean businessman who serves as the president and CEO of Iconix Entertainment. He is best known for creating the animated character Pororo, the Little Penguin.

The film is based on the Korean computer-animated television series Pororo the Little Penguin. In 2014, an English dub of the film directed by Mychal Simka and written by Simka, Harry Glennon, and Ross Mihalko was released featuring the voices of Rob Schneider, Drake Bell, Anthony Anderson, Jon Heder, Jerry Trainor, Dallas Lovato, Jay Mohr, and Simka, as well as original songs by Bell and Smash Mouth.

Jong-il, also spelled Jong-yil, is a Korean masculine given name. Its meaning differs based on the hanja used to write each syllable of the name. There are 19 hanja with the reading "jong" and ten hanja with the reading "il" on the South Korean government's official list of hanja which may be registered for use in given names.

The abduction of Shin Sang-ok and Choi Eun-hee occurred in North Korea between 1978 and 1986. Shin Sang-ok was a famous South Korean film director who had been married to actress Choi Eun-hee. Together, they established Shin Film and made many films through the 1960s which garnered recognition for South Korea at various film festivals. In 1978, Choi was abducted in Hong Kong and taken to North Korea to the country's future supreme leader Kim Jong Il. The abduction of Shin followed six months later.

The history of Korean animation, began with Japanese and American characters dominating the industry. The first sound animated character was created in 1936. The first Korean animation studio opened in Pyongyang in 1948. The first feature-length animated character appeared in 1967. Dooly the Little Dinosaur revolutionized the character market in 1987. As animation characters specific to Korea appeared, the Korean character market continued to grow. Since then, Korean character franchises have even exported their characters to other countries.

An Emissary of No Return is a 1984 North Korean historical drama film directed by Shin Sang-ok and Choi Eun-hee. Shin also wrote the script. It was the first of four films Shin and Choi made during their abduction to North Korea under the orders of Kim Jong Il. Adapted from Bloody Conference(혈분만국회 ), a play allegedly written by Kim Il Sung during his guerrilla years, the film retells the dramatized story of the Hague Secret Emissary Affair. The affair ensued when the Korean emperor king Gojong sent three unauthorized emissaries to the talks of the Hague Convention of 1907.
