Chowdhary Mohmmad Hussain was an Indian politician and bureaucrat. He was part of 4th, 6th, 8th and 9th Jammu and Kashmir state Legislative assembly (Vidhan Sabha). [1] [2] [3] [4] He represented the Darhal Vidhan Sabha constituency of Rajouri district of erstwhile State of Jammu and Kashmir 5 times. He was first elected as MLA from this seat, on the mandate of Indian national congress in 1967 and 1969 (bi elections). He remained district chief of the INC for a long period. In 1972 he was denied the mandate by the INC, In 1975 he joined Jammu and Kashmir national conference headed by Sheikh Mohmmed Abdullah. In 1977 he contested the elections from the same vidhan sabha seat on the mandate of Jammu and Kashmir National Conference and was elected for 3rd time to the Vidhan Sabha. He was inducted in the council of ministers of Sheikh Mohmmed Abdullah. In 1983 he lost the elections to INC candidate and veteran spiritual gujjar leader with a very thin margin. In 1987, elections to Jammu and Kashmir legialative assembly, he was again elected (4th time) to represent this constituency. [5] Again, in 1996 elected to vidhan sabha for (5th time), [6] and was again inducted in the council of ministers headed by Dr Farooq Abdullah which he held till his death 30 September 2002. [7] [8] He also served as Block Development Officer from 1957 to 1967. As a minister he headed the revenue, relief and rehabilitation, rural development and Panchayati Raj cooperatives departments etc. His younger son Chowdhary Zulfkar Ali also represents Darhal (Vidhan Sabha) in 11th and 12th Assemblies and was a cabinet minister in the Mufti Mohommad Sayeed and Mehbooba Mufti Governments.

Mehbooba Mufti Sayed is an Indian politician of the PDP, who served as the 9th Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir from 4 April 2016 to 19 June 2018. She was the first Female CM of J&K. After the revocation of the special status (autonomy) of the state in August 2019, Mufti was detained without any charges at first and later under the Jammu and Kashmir Public Safety Act. She was released only in October 2020, after the Supreme Court of India quizzed the government about the length of her detention.

Khwaja Mubarak Shah was a senior Jammu & Kashmir National Conference leader and former Member of The Indian Parliament (MP) from the North Kashmir constituency of Baramulla in the early 1980s and also served as a Deputy Minister in the 1952 Government of Prime Minister Sheikh Mohammad Abdullah. He also served as Superintendent of Police from 1947 for a brief spell and was trained under Gen. Thimaih, and had given up the job to join politics after Sheikh Mohammed Abdullah was made as an interim Administrator to govern the State when its Dogra ruler Maharaja Hari Singh was dethroned in 1947. He was jailed along with Sheikh Mohammad Abdullah and remained in Jail from August 1953 to February 1963, when his father had died. Mubarak Shah polled an overwhelming 67.57% of votes in the Parliamentary Elections in 1980 as opposed to his closest opponent, Muzaffar Hussain Beg who polled 28.48% of total votes polled. He is the son of Khwaja Sikander Shah of Varmul and the Brother-in-Law of Ghulam Ahmad Ashai. He was succeeded as the MP from Baramulla by Saifuddin Soz, who went on to serve as the Union Minister for Water Resources in the first Manmohan Singh Administration.

Mirza Afzal Beg widely known as Fakhr-e-Kashmir (1908–1982) was a Kashmiri politician and the founding member of Jammu & Kashmir National Conference. He was the first Deputy Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir. He was member of the Constituent Assembly of India. He served as a minister in the pre-independence period in the princely state of Jammu and Kashmir, and as the revenue minister in the post-independence government headed by Sheikh Abdullah. The Jammu Praja Parishad was a political party active in the Jammu Division of the Indian-administered Jammu and Kashmir. It was founded in November 1947 by the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh activist Balraj Madhok, and served as the main opposition party in the state. It maintained close ties with Bharatiya Jana Sangh during its lifetime and merged with the latter in 1963. Its main activity was to campaign for the close integration of Jammu and Kashmir with India and oppose the special status granted to the state under the Article 370 of the Indian constitution. After its merger with the Bharatiya Jana Sangh, the precursor of the present day Bharatiya Janata Party, the party gradually rose in stature. As an integral part of the Bharatiya Janata Party, it was a partner in the ruling coalition led by the People's Democratic Party.

He is an Advocate by profession and was part of the 11th and 12th Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Assembly from Darhal constituency. He is a second-generation politician whose father Chowdhary Mohmmad Hussain was a renowned politician in the erstwhile state of Jammu and Kashmir. Zulfkar has also served as Cabinet Minister under the Chief Ministership of Mufti Mohammad Sayeed and Mehbooba Mufti 2015 to 2018. He was associated with Jammu and Kashmir Peoples Democratic Party and served as district chief of the party for district Rajouri 2003 to 2013. He resigned from the PDP and became one of the founding member of Jammu and Kashmir Apni Party. Presently Vice President of the party. Ali has been Honoured with Best Legislature 2012. As a Cabinet Minister, Ali headed various portfolios. Zulfkar also implemented the national food security act (NFSA) in the state and launched a food for poor scheme (MMSFES).

Haji Buland Khan was an Indian politician and bureaucrat. He was part of the 6th, 7th and 8th Jammu and Kashmir Legislative assembly.

The first election for a legislative assembly called Praja Sabha was held in 1934 in the princely state of Jammu and Kashmir in the British Indian Empire. The Praja Sabha was to have 75 members, of which 12 would be officials, 33 elected members and 30 nominated members. The election was held on 3 September 1934. The All Jammu and Kashmir Muslim Conference under the leadership of Sheikh Abdullah was the largest elected party with 16 seats won. A 'Liberal Group' championed by the Dogra Sadar Sabha had the overall majority in the Assembly with 24 members.

He served as Member of Legislative Assembly (2002-2008) after being elected from the Shangus assembly constituency. He, subsequently, also served as Vice Chairman of the J&K Muslim Wakf Board.
