Chris Sanigar (born 7 July 1955) is a boxing manager, promoter, and trainer, and former boxer. In his career as a boxer he won the BBBofC Southern Area light welterweight title, and in his managerial career he has worked with several British and World champions.

Career

Sanigar grew up in Bristol, and started his amateur career in 1974, reaching the ABA finals in 1977 and representing England three times. [1] [2]

He moved to London, where he was managed by George Francis, and turned professional in 1978, [1] starting his pro career with a points win over Eric Purkis. After winning his first seven fights, he suffered successive defeats in 1979 to George McGurk and future Zambian champion Payson Choolwe. In June 1981 he challenged for his first professional title when he faced Sid Smith for the vacant BBBofC Southern Area light welterweight title; Sanigar was stopped with a cut in the third round. [2] The two met again in November that year, this time with Sanigar knocking Smith out in the fourth round to take the title. [2] In April 1982, Sanigar defended the title against Sylvester Mittee in a fight that was also an eliminator for the British title. Mittee stopped him in the ninth round. In October 1982, Sanigar faced Terry Marsh, losing via disqualification in the seventh round for hitting Marsh while he was down. Sanigar moved up a division in 1984 to face Rocky Kelly for the vacant Southern Area welterweight title, losing a narrow points decision. [3] Sanigar subsequently retired from boxing.

He returned to Bristol and moved into training and management at Bristol Boxing Gym, home of his former club, Empire ABC. [4] [5] [6] He received his manager and trainer's licence in 1989. [2] Boxers he has managed (latterly along with his son Jamie) include Ross Hale, Dean Francis, Adrian Stone, Scott Dann, Glenn Catley, Jamie Arthur, Lee Haskins, Lee Selby, Andrew Selby, and Olympic silver medallist Fred Evans. In October 2016, Sanigar received the Joe Bromley Award for Outstanding Services to Boxing at the Boxing Writers Club dinner. [1]

Lonsdale Belt British boxing award

The Lord Lonsdale Challenge Belt, commonly known as the Lonsdale Belt, is the oldest championship belt in British professional boxing. Hugh Lowther, 5th Earl of Lonsdale introduced the prize on behalf of the National Sporting Club (NSC), intending it to be awarded to British boxing champions. Arthur Frederick Bettinson, manager of the NSC, introduced terms and conditions regarding the holding of the belt, which ensured its lasting prestige. Freddie Welsh won the first Lonsdale Belt in 1909 after winning the NSC British Lightweight title. Heavyweight Henry Cooper was the first and only boxer to win three Lonsdale Belts during his 17-year professional career. Peter Buckley is a retired English journeyman boxer in the Welterweight division. Although he most commonly fought in the Welterweight division, he has competed at a number of weight divisions up and down on either side.

Johnny Summers was an English boxer who competed from 1901 to 1920. He was a British and British Empire (Commonwealth) welterweight champion.

Lee Haskins is a British former professional boxer who competed between 2003 and February 2020. He held the IBF bantamweight title from 2015 to 2017, and the IBF interim title in 2015. At regional level, he held the Commonwealth flyweight title in 2006; the British super-flyweight title from 2008 to 2009; the Commonwealth super-flyweight title in 2009; the British bantamweight title in 2013; and the European bantamweight title twice between 2012 and 2015.

Joey "The Jab" Singleton is a former British professional boxer who competed from 1973 to 1982. He is a former British light-welterweight champion.

Pat Thomas was a Light-middleweight boxer, originally from Saint Kitts and Nevis, who took British citizenship and won two British boxing titles in the 1970s and 80s. After leaving Saint Kitts, Thomas settled in Cardiff in Wales, and is recognised as a Welsh fighter taking the Welsh light middleweight Championship in 1977.

Freddie William Evans is a British professional boxer fighting in the 69 kg welterweight category. As an amateur, he won gold at the 2007 World Cadet Championships in Hungary and won gold for Wales at the 2011 European Amateur Boxing Championships in Ankara. He was the first Welsh boxer to achieve the feat in 86 years.

Sylvester "The Master Blaster" Mittee is a Saint Lucian British boxer of the 1970s and 1980s. He fought as an amateur lightweight and a professional light welterweight/welterweight/light middleweight, winning multiple championships.

Colin Powers is a British former boxer who was British light welterweight champion between 1977 and 1979 and European champion in 1978.
