Christian Cardona (born 1972) is a Maltese politician and lawyer. He is a Member of Parliament for the Maltese Labour Party and was elected Deputy Leader for Party Affairs in 2016. [1] He served as Malta's Minister for the Economy, Investment and Small Business between 2013 and 2020. [2]

Biography

Cardona was born in 1972 and graduated as Notary Public and Doctor of Laws from the University of Malta. He furthered his studies in international maritime law at the United Nations' International Maritime Organization where he obtained a first Class master's degree in shipping law. Cardona is the author of the thesis entitled United Nations Commission on International Trade Law – A Maltese Perspective.

He was first elected to Parliament in 1996 and was re-elected in the 1998, 2003, 2008 and 2013 general elections. In 2008, he contested the post of Deputy Leader for Parliamentary Affairs of the Labour Party. In 2013, he has been elected by the Labour Party's delegates as Deputy Leader for Party Affairs.

During the 2008 – 2013 legislature he served as the Labour Party main Spokesperson for the Industry, Self Employed and Foreign Investment. In previous legislatures he served as the Labour Party Spokesperson for Competition, Communication and IT. Cardona also served as a member in the Malta EU Parliamentary Committee during the negotiation process of Malta’s application to join the European Union as a full member.

Prior to his appointment as Minister for the Economy, Investment and Small Business, Cardona was a Senior Partner at law firm CV Advocates.

On 11 June 2016, Cardona won the deputy leadership race, succeeding Konrad Mizzi as Deputy Leader for Party affairs of the Labour Party. [1]

In January 2017, investigative journalist Daphne Caruana Galizia alleged that, while in Germany on official government business, Cardona visited a brothel with his aide Joe Gerada. Both Cardona and Gerada denied the claims and instituted legal action in the form of libel suits, however before the case was decided in court, Carauna Galizia was killed in a car bomb attack. [3]

Cardona suspended himself as a minister in November 2019, in the context of the arrest of Yorgen Fenech and Keith Schembri. [4] . He asked for protection due to an alleged frame-up for the murder of Caruana Galizia. [5] He was later reinstated as minister. [6]

Cardona, along with former Health Minister Konrad Mizzi and Finance Minister Edward Scicluna, is the subject of a criminal inquiry over the deal with Vitals Global Healthcare. [7]

2017 Maltese general election

General elections were held in Malta on Saturday, 3 June 2017. The elections were contested by the Labour Party, led by Prime Minister Joseph Muscat, the Nationalist Party, led by opposition leader Simon Busuttil, and four other parties; making it the elections with most parties participating since 1962. The result was a victory for the Labour Party, with 55% of the popular vote. Voter turnout reached 92%.

Konrad Mizzi Maltese politician

Daphne Caruana Galizia Maltese journalist and blogger

Daphne Anne Caruana Galizia was a Maltese journalist, writer, and anti-corruption activist, who reported on political events in Malta. In particular, she focused on investigative journalism, reporting on government corruption, nepotism, patronage, allegations of money laundering, links between Malta's online gambling industry and organized crime, Malta's citizenship-by-investment scheme, and payments from the government of Azerbaijan. Caruana Galizia's national and international reputation was built on her regular reporting of misconduct by Maltese politicians and politically exposed persons.

Justyne Caruana, is a Maltese lawyer and politician, and former Minister for Gozo. She was appointed on 9 June 2017 in the second cabinet of Joseph Muscat and reconfirmed by Robert Abela before resigning one week later on 20 January 2020.

Yorgen Fenech is a Maltese businessman whose main interests are casinos and hotels in Malta. He was head of the Tumas Group and director of the Maltese-Azerbaijan-German company Electrogas.

2019 Malta political crisis

The 2019 Malta political crisis was a political and institutional crisis within the Republic of Malta following the uncovering of alleged links between government officials and the 2017 assassination of investigative journalist Daphne Caruana Galizia. The Prime Minister's Chief of Staff Keith Schembri and Minister for Tourism Konrad Mizzi resigned following the arrest of businessman Yorgen Fenech in connection with the murder.

2019–2020 Maltese protests 2019 protest movement started in Malta

Protests started in Valletta and other urban centres of Malta on 20 November 2019, predominantly calling for resignations after alleged political links to the assassination of journalist and blogger Daphne Caruana Galizia surfaced following the arrest of businessman Yorgen Fenech. The protesters also targeted government corruption and the lack of action on money laundering. The protests consisted of demonstrations, marches, sit-ins, and civil disobedience and are unprecedented in Malta's political history since its independence from the United Kingdom.

Robert Abela Prime Minister of Malta (2020-present)

Robert Abela is a Maltese lawyer and politician, currently serving as the 14th prime minister of Malta. A Member of Parliament since 2017, he replaced Joseph Muscat as Leader of the Labour Party following the party's internal leadership election held on 11 January 2020, and was instated as prime minister on 13 January. Abela is the son of George Abela, the eighth president of Malta.
