Christian College, Chengannur (CCC) is a government-aided college for higher education located at Angadickal Chengannur, Alappuzha district, Kerala, India. It was established in 1964 by Rt. Rev. Dr. Mathews Mar Athanasius Episcopa. The college is owned and operated by Malankara Marthoma Syrian Church and affiliated with Kerala University. [1] The NAAC Accredited B++ Grade College has 9 departments offering various graduate and post-graduate courses. [2] Notable alumni of the college include Saji Cherian and former parliamentarian KK Ramachandran Nair.

Endeavours

The College turned a garbage dump into a mini-forest, in an effort for biodiversity conservation. The mini-forest, also known as Shanthisthal, was set up by the Christian College Biodiversity Club, and is home to around 200 trees and plants of 116 species, including several rare, endangered and threatened ones. [3] The College also has the Campus Bird initiative in which birdwatchers and students came together to document the number of birds, to study the changes in regions where such birds exist and how climate change affects the population. [4]

Awards

The college received the Vanamitra Award, instituted by the Kerala Forest Department, on July 2, 2024 for their biodiversity conservation efforts. [3]

Philipose Mar Chrysostom Mar Thoma XX was an Indian prelate who served as Metropolitan of the Malankara Mar Thoma Syrian Church from 1999-2007 and Valiya Metropolitan from 2007 until his death. He was the world's longest serving bishop, serving for −67 years, 11 months and 12 days. He was addressed and referred to as Chrysostom Thirumeni or Valiya Thirumeni after his retirement. He was also a known humorist. He was awarded India's third highest civilian award, the Padma Bhushan, in 2018.

Juhanon Mar Thoma XVIII was the Metropolitan of the Malankara Mar Thoma Syrian Church from 1949–1976, who gave leadership to the church and at the same time actively participated in social and political arenas. He was respected by people from all walks of life, from all religions and from all age groups. He is remembered for providing the church with its famous motto "Lighted to Lighten". His humanistic and socially-engaged approach to the Christian faith was embodied in his personal credo: "The Church must be interested where human life is interested."

Mar Thoma VI, also known as Mar Dionysius I, was the 6th Metropolitan of the Malankara Syrian Church, serving from 1765 until his demise on 7 April 1808. His original name was Iype, and he was born as the only son of Mathew (Mathan) Tharakan, the elder brother of Mar Thoma V, in the Pallippuram branch of the Pakalomattom Family(Andoor, Marangattupilly).

Mar Thoma VII was a Bishop of the Malankara Church from 1796 and the 7th Malankara Metropolitan from April 1808 to July 1809. Born in Pakalomattom family in Kurichithanam, Pala, he was well known as an efficient administrator, deeply religious but was a quiet and reserved person. During his time, a difficult period in the history of Travancore State, the church was able to help Travancore government by depositing an amount as fixed deposit, which came to be known as Vattipanam.

Mathews Mar Athenasius Episcopa was the first missionary bishop of the Malankara Mar Thoma Syrian Church. As a diocesan Episcopa he did remarkable pioneering work in organising parishes and new mission fields. His evangelical ardour and concern for the unreached area, made him forge ahead expansion programmes and colonisation schemes besides establishing of several institutions.

Easow Mar Timotheos was an Indian episcopa (bishop) of the Malankara Mar Thoma Syrian Church, an Indian Christian church tracing its history back to Thomas the Apostle in the 1st century. He was a bishop from 1975 to 1988, and a missionary priest before that.

Geevarghese Mar Philoxenos aka Puthencavil Kochu Thirumeni was an administrator, orator and an advocate of Orthodox and the Catholicate of the Malankara Orthodox Syrian Church of India. He served as Metropolitan of Thumpamon Diocese from 1930 to 1951.
