The phrase first drew widespread attention due to a November 2019 TikTok video in response to an older man, though the phrase had been coined years before that. Considered by some to be ageist, the phrase has developed into a retort for perceived resistance to technological change, climate change denial, marginalization of members of minority groups, or opposition to younger generations' values.

Dixie Jane D'Amelio is an American social media personality known for her videos on the social media platform TikTok. Dixie is the elder of the D'Amelio sisters. She was born in Norwalk, Connecticut. In 2020, she starred in the YouTube web series Attaway General. She has over 55 million followers on TikTok and hosts a talk show on YouTube called The Early Late Night Show. In 2020, she signed a record deal with HitCo Entertainment and began releasing singles.
Groypers, sometimes called the Groyper Army, are a group of white nationalist and far-right activists, provocateurs, and internet trolls who are notable for their attempts to introduce far-right politics into mainstream conservatism in the United States, their participation in the 2021 United States Capitol attack and the protests leading up to that, and their extremist views. They are known for targeting other conservative groups and individuals whose agendas they view as too moderate and insufficiently nationalist. The Groyper movement has been described as white nationalist, homophobic, nativist, fascist, sexist, antisemitic, and an attempt to rebrand the declining alt-right movement.

Parnas, who was once a staunch Republican and supporter of President Donald Trump, has since become an activist in support of the Democratic Party.
Libs of TikTok, also known by the handle @libsoftiktok, is a conservative Twitter account that reposts content created by liberals, leftists, and LGBT people on TikTok and on other social media platforms in a derogatory manner. The account has over 1.3 million followers as of June 2022, and has become influential among American conservatives.
