The Cigar Mile Handicap is a Grade II American thoroughbred horse race for horses aged three-years-old and older over a distance of one mile and is held in late November or early December at Aqueduct Racetrack in Queens, New York. The event carries a purse of $750,000.

History

The inaugural running of the event, then known as the NYRA Mile Handicap or simply the NYRA Mile, was won in 1988 by three-year-old Forty Niner, who would later become an influential sire. [1] The race was eligible for graded stakes classification in 1990 and was awarded Grade I status by the American Graded Stakes Committee. [2]

The 1994 NYRA Mile was the second race in the 16-race win streak of Cigar, who won by seven lengths. [2] The event was renamed in 1997 following Cigar's retirement to the Cigar Mile Handicap. [3] Horses who have won the Cigar Mile on their way to championship honors include 2006 winner Discreet Cat (named one of the year's champion three-year-olds in the World's Best Racehorse Rankings), 2009 winner Kodiak Kowboy (winner of that year's Eclipse Award for Champion Sprinter), and 2019 victor Maximum Security (that year's Eclipse winner for Best Three-Year-Old Male).

In 2023 the event was downgraded by the Thoroughbred Owners and Breeders Association to Grade II status. [4]

Cigar, was an American Thoroughbred racehorse who was the 1995 and 1996 American Horse of the Year. He was the first American racehorse racing against top-class competition to win 16 consecutive races since Triple Crown winner Citation did so between 1948 and 1950. His major wins included the 1995 Breeders' Cup Classic, the NYRA Mile, Jockey Club Gold Cup, Woodward Stakes (twice), Oaklawn Handicap, Hollywood Gold Cup, Donn Handicap (twice) and the first running of the Dubai World Cup. He became the leading money earner in racing history and was later inducted into the National Museum of Racing and Hall of Fame.

It is held annually at a different racetrack in the United States as part of the Breeders' Cup World Championships in late October or early November. All of the races to date have been held in the United States except for the 1996 edition held at Woodbine Racetrack in Toronto, Canada.

White Abarrio is a multiple Grade I winning American Thoroughbred racehorse. In 2022 he won the Florida Derby and competed against the best three-year-olds in the US. In 2023, as a four-year old, he won the Grade I Whitney Stakes at Saratoga Race Course and the Breeders' Cup Classic at Santa Anita Park.
