Organisations based on the British Citizens Advice charity exist in a number of jurisdictions outside the United Kingdom. Although none of these organisations is controlled by the British charity, they adopt the branding and identity of Citizens Advice to varying degrees.

Some are members of Citizens Advice International, an umbrella organisation created in 2004 to "represent the interests of independent free advice-giving organisations around the world". [1] It has 12 members. [1] However, the membership of Citizens Advice International also includes other national advice organisations totally unrelated to the British Citizens Advice.

Australia

There are citizens advice bureaus in a number of places in Australia.

In the state of Victoria they are now generally referred to as "community information and support services" rather than "Citizens Advice". Their umbrella and peak body is Community Information & Support Victoria (CISVic). [2] Local centres are located at:

The South Australian CAB is in Adelaide.

Legal Aid and free legal services to some extent augment Citizen Advice Bureaus in Australia.

Channel Islands

The Channel Islands have citizens advice bureaux in Jersey [7] and Gurnsey. [8]

Gibraltar

The British territory of Gibraltar has a citizens advice bureau. [9]

New Zealand

New Zealand has more than 80 citizens advice bureau. [10]

Ireland

In Ireland they are at Ballina. [11]

Spain

A Spanish citizens advice organisation exists largely serving the British expat community in Spain. [12] CAB Spain asks for voluntary donations through their website for anyone who wishes to support them with funding. All advice by telephone, email, Facebook or at the legal clinics is free. All the information provided on the website for guidance and information is free. CAB Spain, is however, NOT affiliated in any way with CAB in the UK, which is a registered UK charity and therefore totally free, unlike CAB Spain which does not receive any funding so self-funding.

The Asylum Seeker Resource Centre (ASRC) is an asylum seeker support organisation in Australia. The ASRC, based in Footscray, a suburb of Melbourne, Victoria, provides aid, justice and empowerment programs to over 1000 asylum seekers living in the community seeking refugee protection. The ASRC is run by a team of over 1000 volunteers and around 100 paid staff, and is headed by former university lecturer and lawyer Kon Karapanagiotidis.

Occupy Melbourne was a social movement which took place from late 2011 to mid 2012 in Melbourne, Australia as part of the global Occupy movement Participants expressed grievances concerning economic inequality, social injustice, corruption in the financial sector, corporate greed and the influence of companies and lobbyists on government. Protests began on 15 October 2011 in City Square with a 6-day-long protest encampment, from which people were forcibly evicted by Victoria Police at the request of the City of Melbourne CEO on 21 October 2011. From 2 November 2011, Occupy set up camp in Treasury Gardens before being moved on from that location in December. A significantly diminished number of protesters set up camp at Father Bob's church at his invitation until his retirement in January 2012. Physical manifestations of the movement had largely dissipated by mid-2012 though it adopted a strategy of decentralisation and became influential in the creation of new community networks, affinity groups and collectives.

Citizens Advice Scotland (CAS), formally the Scottish Association of Citizens Advice Bureaux (SACAB), is a registered charity. Based in Edinburgh it comprises 61 member bureaux, including a national helpline. Together these free local and national services provide legal advice, practical help and information on consumer and political rights across Scotland.

Citizens Advice International aims to promote free advice services and provide support to Citizens Advice organisations throughout the world. Citizens Advice International is not controlled by the British Citizens Advice charity.
