City View Center was a power center in Garfield Heights, Ohio, east of Cleveland. Positioned to be a regional shopping destination with stores such as Walmart, Giant Eagle, Dick's Sporting Goods and Bed Bath & Beyond, the development intended to increase Garfield Heights' commercial base soon developed into a modern dead mall, being built on landfill which soon liquified and caused damage to its buildings, along with fears of methane gas remaining unvented beneath the site which then caused multiple stores to close and abandon the center. A second phase that would have included The Home Depot, JCPenney, Panera, Chick-fil-A, Buffalo Wild Wings, Dollar Tree, and a Dental was never built, with those retailers fearing a redux of Phase I of the development. [1] The shopping center underwent redevelopment, completing the process by 2021.
The shopping center opened in 2006, after two years of construction. After the big-box stores opened, construction began outside the main plaza for additional restaurants and retail, such as RadioShack, Applebee's, Fatburger, Qdoba (later MC Sports), Steak n Shake, Ruby Tuesday, and a FirstMerit branch. [2]
The first store to close was Jo-Ann Fabrics on April 23, 2008. [3] On September 15, 2008, Walmart announced the immediate closure and abandonment of their store due to structural concerns related to methane gas and settlement issues beneath its store site. [4] Following Walmart's closure, PetSmart announced on October 2, 2008 that they would also close, as that chain specifically connects a number of its store locations to that of Home Depot, which never broke ground, violating PetSmart's leasing conditions. [5]
Circuit City then followed with a closure of their store on December 31, 2008 as part of its nationwide liquidation. [6] Bottom Dollar Food opened in that space in late November 2009. In late 2009, Bed Bath And Beyond closed. On January 2, 2010, Dick's Sporting Goods shut down after nearly four years. [7]
In March 2010, plans to convert the former Walmart into a convention center were floated but never regarded as a serious endeavor. Bottom Dollar Food departed on November 11, 2010, only lasting under a year at City View Center. In December 2010, AJWright parent company, TJX announced that they would rebrand that chain's stores to its other more well-known brands, HomeGoods, T.J. Maxx, or Marshalls, with the specific store becoming a Marshalls and closing two years later in 2013.
The second-to-last tenant, OfficeMax, announced on November 14, 2015, that they would be closing their store. FirstMerit closed in 2017 after the bank's acquisition by Huntington, which already had two nearby branches to the north and south on Turley Road (a Huntington ATM remains within the Giant Eagle). Steak 'n Shake closed their location in April 2019, though that was more related to the chain's overall struggles and decline due to its shifting business models and ownership. [8] As of 2024, Giant Eagle is the only original remaining store in the Transportation Boulevard complex. [9] Applebee's also remains open. [10] A ribbon cutting ceremony was held at 9am on August 19 for Goodwill which opened in the former PetSmart location in August 2022. [11]
As of February 2018, the vacant buildings on the site were under consideration as potential replacement facilities for Garfield Heights' police department, court, and jail. [12] By May 2019, the then-owner of the site, City View LLC, had failed to repay an $81 million loan, leading to the placement of the site into receivership. [13] In April 2020, Industrial Commercial Properties, LLC, acquired the mortgage on the property with plans to redevelop it into a business park. [14] The redevelopment project was successfully completed in 2021. [15]
A strip mall, strip center, strip plaza or simply plaza is a type of shopping center common in North America and Australia where the stores are arranged in a row, with a footpath in front. Strip malls are typically developed as a unit and have large parking lots in front. Many of them face major traffic arterials and tend to be self-contained with few pedestrian connections to surrounding neighborhoods. Smaller strip malls may be called mini-malls, while larger ones may be called power centers or big box centers. In 2013, The New York Times reported that the United States had 65,840 strip malls. In 2020, The Wall Street Journal wrote that in the United States, despite the continuing retail apocalypse that started in around 2010, investments and visitor numbers were increasing to strip malls.

The Los Cerritos Center is a super regional shopping mall located in Cerritos, California. Since September 1971, the Los Cerritos Center has been an integral part of the city of Cerritos' tax revenue. The mall is the city's largest revenue source, producing $581 per square foot in sales in 2010. The tax revenue generated from the Los Cerritos Center for its host city totals to approximately $3 million a year. The facility is owned by Macerich & GIC Private Limited.
Hilltop Mall was a regional shopping center in the Hilltop neighborhood of Richmond, California. Hilltop was managed and co-owned by Prologis, Inc. The only anchor store left is Walmart. There are 3 vacant anchor stores that were once Macy's, JCPenney and Sears.
Lakeside Mall is a defunct super-regional shopping mall in Sterling Heights, Michigan. Located on the M-59 commercial corridor, the mall is currently anchored by Macy's and JCPenney via exterior entrances, with two vacant anchor stores previously occupied by Lord & Taylor and Sears. With 1,550,000 square feet of retail space spanning two floors, Lakeside was the largest mall in Michigan by leasable square footage at the time of its closing.
Cumberland Mall is a shopping mall in the Cumberland district of Metropolitan Atlanta near the suburbs of Smyrna and Vinings. It was the largest shopping mall in Georgia when it opened on August 8, 1973. The mall features the traditional retailers Macy's, Dick's Sporting Goods, Costco, in addition to Planet Fitness, and Round 1 Entertainment.
Latham Circle Mall was an enclosed shopping mall located adjacent to the Latham Circle in Latham, New York. Built in 1957 as Latham Corners Shopping Center, the mall was renovated several times in its history, most notably in 1977 when it became a fully enclosed and temperature-controlled shopping mall.
Richmond Town Square was a super regional shopping mall known locally as 'Richmond' or 'Richmond Mall', located in Richmond Heights, Ohio, a suburb of Cleveland, at the intersection of Richmond Road and Wilson Mills Road. Opening September 22, 1966 as Richmond Mall, developed by famous mall developer Edward J. DeBartolo Sr. Original anchors were Sears and JCPenney, alongside a Loews Theater and Woolworths. The mall included in-line tenants such as Richman Brothers, and Winkelman's.
Livonia Marketplace is an open-air shopping mall in the Detroit suburb of Livonia, Michigan. Opened in 2010, the center is anchored by Kohl's and Walmart. It occupies the site of the former Livonia Mall, which was an enclosed mall built in 1964. Livonia Mall lost the majority of its tenants in the 2000s, including its previous anchor stores of Crowley's, Sears, Mervyns, and Children's Palace. The mall was closed in May 2008, with only the Sears remaining from the original property. Sears closed in April 2020.
The Village at Orange, formerly known as the Orange Mall and later as The Mall of Orange, was a small enclosed shopping mall located in Orange, California. The mall, one of Orange's first, opened for consumer entry in 1971, and was composed of both internal merchants and external anchor tenant buildings, the original latter of which only Walmart remains operational. In September 2023, TVO Management, the mall's property manager, announced that the internal portion of the mall would close on or by January 31, 2024. The mall ceased internal operations on the date provided by TVO Management, marking the end of 52 years of constant public operation in Northern Orange.
Moosejaw.com is a defunct online and brick and mortar retailer that specialized in outdoor recreation apparel and gear for snowboarding, rock climbing, hiking, and camping. The company was founded in 1992 by Robert Wolfe and David Jaffe, two longtime friends who chose to sell camping equipment instead of becoming wilderness guides. Moosejaw was known for its nonsensical marketing called "Moosejaw Madness".
Antioch Crossing is a shopping center in Kansas City, Missouri on the site of the former Antioch Center, a mall which opened in 1956 and became nearly vacant by 2005. The majority of the former dead mall was demolished in January 2012, with the exception of two anchor stores, and redevelopment on the site began in 2014. The shopping center is currently anchored by Burlington Coat Factory, Walmart Neighborhood Market, Vintage Stock, and a vacant space previously occupied by Sears until July 2017.
Swansea Mall was a regional shopping mall located in Swansea, Massachusetts. It served the Southeastern Massachusetts area. Located off Exit 3 of I-195, the building is situated at the intersection of U.S. Route 6 and Massachusetts Route 118, on Swansea Mall Drive. It had three out-parcel buildings: a Walmart building behind the mall, a former Toys "R" Us, a shared PriceRite and Dollar Tree. The Swansea Crossings shopping plaza is across the street, and contains a Big Lots and a Tractor Supply Company. The mall closed permanently on March 31, 2019. It was purchased by Anagnost Companies in May 2019 at auction.
The Reisterstown Road Plaza, usually known since its inception simply as "The Plaza," is a shopping center and mall located near the Reisterstown Plaza Metro Subway Station. Originally built as an outdoor shopping center, it was later converted into an indoor mall, and then expanded with big box stores in an outdoor shopping area. The Reisterstown Road Plaza opened in 1962. The anchor stores are Home Depot, Five Below, Petco, Marshalls, Giant, Shoppers World, and Big Lots. There are 2 vacant anchor stores that were once Modell's Sporting Goods and Burlington.
The Cortlandt Town Center is a large retail power center located in Cortlandt, New York. The New York Times called it "the main shopping area of the town of Cortlandt Manor" in 2003. The current incarnation was founded in 1997 from buildings that made up the mostly enclosed Westchester Mall built in 1975. Many new buildings were added as well, and it is currently a predominantly outdoor shopping center, eventually growing to approximately 772,000 sq ft (71,700 m2). Anchor stores include Walmart, The Home Depot, Best Buy, Acme Markets, Barnes & Noble, PetSmart, Michaels, Old Navy, Marshall's, DSW, and Home Goods. It also contains a 12-screen United Artists Theater, GameStop, Five Below, Mattress Firm, the Mohegan Lake post office and several restaurants including McDonald's, Applebee's, Panera Bread, Subway, Five Guys, Emperor's Garden, and Mia's Pizza. There are 3 vacant spaces last left by Modell's Sporting Goods, Pier 1 Imports, and Dress Barn.
Ledgewood Commons is a shopping plaza in the Ledgewood, section of Roxbury, New Jersey, United States. Its anchors are Walmart, Burlington, and Marshalls. It is an outdoor shopping plaza with a gross leasable area of 448,000 sq ft (41,600 m2) The site covers 51.6 acres (20.9 ha) and has 2,223 parking spaces. From the mall's opening in 1972 until 2016, it was branded Ledgewood Mall as a 518,246-square-foot (48,147 m2) enclosed mall.
Kentucky Oaks Mall is an enclosed super-regional shopping mall in Paducah, Kentucky, United States. The mall was developed by the Cafaro Company, which owns and manages it. There are more than 100 stores. The anchor stores are Ross Dress for Less, Burlington, 2 Dillard's stores, HomeGoods, Best Buy, JCPenney, Dick's Sporting Goods, and Vertical Jump Park. Other major tenants of the mall include H&M, Five Below, and Shoe Dept. Encore.
Highlands Mall is a former shopping mall in Harrison Township, Pennsylvania that operates today as an open-air shopping center. It opened in 1977 and closed in 2006, reopening after its redevelopment in 2008.
Steelyard Commons is a shopping center in Cleveland, Ohio, having opened in 2007. The center gets its name for having been built on the site of the former LTV Steel Factory #2 in the city's Tremont neighborhood which closed in 2001.
