Cleopatra is a painting by the Italian baroque artist Artemisia Gentileschi, completed in the mid-1630s. [1] It is owned by a private collection in Rome.

Description

The nude figure of a woman reclines on a bed, partly covered by a bright blue mantle, with a small basket of flowers at her left elbow. Two women enter the scene from behind a curtain, one of whom appears to be weeping. The extreme pallor of her skin and the small snake moving away on the sheet signify the final moments of Cleopatra's life. Her head has dropped back on the pillows, causing her crown to fall from her wavy golden hair. While Cleopatra was a relatively common subject for her contemporaries, it was rare to portray this moment of the story, the queen's death. [1]

History

Attribution

Until the 1980s, it was thought to be the work of Massimo Stanzione. [1] While most scholars now accept this as a work of Artemisia, there are some indications that it may represent a collaboration with her pupil Onofrio Palumbo. [1] Alternatively, it could simply be influenced by the style of her Neapolitan contemporaries. [1]

Provenance

While it is believed to have been executed during the artist's time in Naples, [1] the work is first recorded at the Matthiesen Gallery in London in the 1980s. [2] It was purchased from the gallery in 1987 by the present owner. [2]

Massimo Stanzione was an Italian Baroque painter, mainly active in Naples, where he and his rival Jusepe de Ribera dominated the painting scene for several decades. He was primarily a painter of altarpieces, working in both oils and fresco. His main subject matter was biblical scenes. He also painted portraits and mythological subjects. He had many pupils and followers as his rich color and idealized naturalism had a large influence on other local artists, such as Francesco Solimena. In 1621 Pope Gregory XV gave him the title of Knight of the Golden Spur and Pope Urban VIII made him a knight of St. John around 1624 and a knight of the Order of Christ in 1627. From then on, he liked to sign his works as "EQUES MAXIMUS".

Judith Slaying Holofernes is a painting by the Italian early Baroque artist Artemisia Gentileschi, completed in 1612-13 and now at the Museo Capodimonte, Naples, Italy. The picture is considered one of her iconic works. The canvas shows Judith beheading Holofernes. The subject takes an episode from the apocryphal Book of Judith in the Old Testament, which recounts the assassination of the Assyrian general Holofernes by the Israelite heroine Judith. The painting shows the moment when Judith, helped by her maidservant Abra, beheads the general after he has fallen asleep in a drunken stupor. She painted a second version now in the Uffizi, Florence, somewhere between 1613 and 1621.

Susanna and the Elders is a 1610 painting by the Italian Baroque artist Artemisia Gentileschi and is her earliest-known signed and dated work. It was one of Gentileschi's signature works. She painted several variations of the scene in her career. It currently hangs at Schloss Weißenstein in Pommersfelden, Germany. The work shows a frightened Susanna with two men lurking above her while she is in the bath. The subject matter comes from the deuterocanonical Book of Susanna in the Additions to Daniel. This was a popular scene to paint during the Baroque period.

The narrative is taken from the deuterocanonical Book of Judith, in which Judith seduces and then murders the general Holofernes. This precise moment illustrates the maidservant Abra wrapping the severed head in a bag, moments after the murder, while Judith keeps watch.
