On August 28, 2017, a mass shooting occurred at the Clovis-Carver Library, a public library in downtown Clovis, New Mexico, U.S. The gunman fatally shot two people and injured four others. He was identified as Nathaniel Jouett, a 16-year-old student at nearby Clovis High School. [3]

Shooting

On the day of the shooting, the suspect recorded three videos at his home where he announces his planned massacre. In the videos, he apologizes for his upcoming actions and tries to explain his motivations in which he cited various factors (bullying, mental illness, and suicidal thoughts). [4]

The suspect entered the library at 4:15 pm MST on Monday, August 28, 2017, and went into the restroom. There, Jouett uploaded a photo of his camera bag, containing his father's guns and ammunition, to his social media. The uploaded photo also displayed a time "4:10 PM" over the original photo. A caption attached to the photo says "It begins". [5] Shortly after he walked out of the restroom, he pulled out the .380-caliber handgun from his bag and began shooting. [6] At the time of the shooting, it was unclear how many people were in the library and Jouett seemed to fire randomly as individuals and parents with children tried to flee. [7] In the span of six seconds, Jouett rapidly fired 14 rounds from the .380-caliber handgun indiscriminately. During those six seconds, he fatally shot two people and injured three others, including a 10-year-old child. [8] Surveillance footage captured Jouett walking around the library, shouting at people to run, after he fired those 14 rounds. Eventually, Jouett placed the .380-caliber handgun back in the bag he was carrying and pulled out the .45-caliber handgun. He proceeded to wound one more person before firing four times through a door trying to hit someone who barricaded themselves. In total, he fired 14 rounds from the .380-caliber handgun and six rounds from the .45-caliber handgun. [9] Jouett wandered around the library without firing any more shots and eventually encountered a man who had returned to the library while on the phone with 911. The shooter told the man to put down his phone. The man told Jouett that someone was looking for him. The suspect turned around and threatened a mother and child before walking towards where the man was pointing at. [7] Soon after, the police arrived.

According to an eyewitness, the gunman entered the library and shot into the carpet, shouting "Run! Why aren’t you running? I’m shooting at you! Run!" before he began to move about the room shooting at people. [10] Another witness claimed that Jouett looked happy, that "He was just laughing, smiling the whole time, until he came up real close to me, and then he put on that mean look." [7]

Police received multiple emergency calls. [6] About 15 minutes after the first call came in, police received a call from the suspect's father, who told them that the suspect had taken his father's guns from the safe where they were kept, and left the house. [6]

The suspect surrendered immediately when police arrived; he did not struggle with the arresting officers. [10] He told police that he had been planning an attack for a while, and that he had intended to shoot up the school before killing himself. [6]

Victims

Two people, Wanda Walters, 61, and Kristina Carter, 48, both library employees, were killed. Kristina Carter was the youth librarian and Wanda Walters worked at the circulation desk. Four people were wounded, who were identified as Howard Jones, 53, Jessica Thron, 30, Alexis Molina, 20, and Noah Molina, 10. [10] Alexis was shot four times while shielding her brother, who was shot once, from gunfire. [11]

According to Public Radio station KUNM, although the Associated Press usually refrains from using the names of juvenile defendants, it chose to publish Nathaniel Jouett's name "because of the seriousness of the crime and because authorities are seeking adult sanctions." [12]

Curry County District Attorney Andrea Reeb announced prior to the trial that she intended to prosecute Jouett as an adult. [10] The suspect made his first court appearance on August 31, 2017. [13] Jouett was indicted on September 8, 2017, for two counts of first-degree murder, seven counts of child abuse, four counts of aggravated battery, and twenty counts of assault with intent to commit a violent felony. In April 2018, a judge denied a defense request to transfer Jouett from prison to a juvenile treatment facility, [17] and ordered that he undergo a mental "evaluation and assessment" so that his mental health needs could be addressed. [18] On October 17, 2018, Jouett pleaded guilty in the shooting. [19] On February 15, 2019, Jouett was sentenced to two life sentences, with the possibility of parole, plus 40 years in prison. [20] Jouett is currently incarcerated in the Lea County Correctional Center. [21]

Family members of two of the wounded victims filed a lawsuit against the perpetrators parents and his psychologist. [22]

Later that afternoon, he attacked the New Life Church in Colorado Springs, Colorado, with a number of firearms, killing two more people and injuring three before being shot by Jeanne Assam, a member of the church's safety team. Murray then committed suicide by shooting himself in the head.

On August 24, 2012, a gunman shot and killed a former co-worker outside the Empire State Building in New York City. Following the initial shooting, the gunman, 58-year-old Jeffrey T. Johnson, was fatally shot by police officers after raising his weapon at them. Nine bystanders were wounded by stray bullets fired by the officers and ricocheting debris, but none suffered life-threatening injuries.

The Townville Elementary School shooting occurred on September 28, 2016, in Townville, South Carolina, located 40 miles (64 km) southwest of Greenville. Fourteen-year-old Jesse Osborne shot three students and a teacher, critically wounding six-year-old student Jacob Hall, who died from his injuries three days later. Osborne, who had also shot and killed his father before the shooting, was arrested as the sole suspect and charged with murder and attempted murder.

On January 6, 2017, a mass shooting occurred at Fort Lauderdale–Hollywood International Airport in Broward County, Florida, United States, near the baggage claim in Terminal 2. Five people were killed while six others were injured in the shooting. About 36 people sustained injuries in the ensuing panic. Esteban Santiago-Ruiz, who flew in to the airport from Alaska and committed the shooting with a Walther PPS 9mm semi-automatic pistol, was taken into custody by a Broward County Sheriff's Office (BSO) deputy within 85 seconds after he started shooting. The shooting from start to finish lasted 70–80 seconds. Santiago was later diagnosed with schizophrenia and pleaded guilty to avoid possible execution. On August 17, 2018, Santiago was sentenced to five consecutive life sentences plus 120 years in prison.

A mass shooting occurred on September 24, 2017, when a gunman opened fire at the Burnette Chapel Church of Christ in Antioch, Tennessee, part of the Greater Nashville area, killing one person and injuring six others.

On April 22, 2018, a mass shooting occurred at a Waffle House restaurant in the Antioch neighborhood of Nashville, Tennessee, United States, when 29-year-old Travis Jeffrey Reinking fatally shot four people and injured two others with an AR-15 style rifle. Another two people were injured by broken glass. Reinking was rushed by an unarmed customer, James Shaw Jr., who wrestled the rifle away and stopped the shooting spree. Reinking was captured on April 23, ending a 34-hour manhunt.

The Noblesville West Middle School shooting occurred on May 25, 2018 in Noblesville, Indiana when a 13-year-old student shot and injured teacher Jason Seaman and student Ella Whistler. In response, Seaman wrestled the shooter to the ground. The school later reopened. The shooter confessed to the shooting and he is serving time in a juvenile detention center.

On May 5 and 6, 2016, a shooting spree occurred across several locations in Maryland. Eulalio Tordil, a Homeland Security officer, traveled across the Washington metropolitan area, where he shot and killed three people and wounded three others in the span of 24 hours between May 5 and 6, 2016. The shooting was reminiscent of the 2002 Washington, D.C., sniper attacks.

On January 23, 2019, at around 12:30 pm, five women – four employees and a customer – were shot and killed at the SunTrust Bank in Sebring, Florida. Zephen Xaver, aged 21, surrendered and was arrested at the scene by police after a standoff and the deployment of a SWAT team. He initially pleaded not guilty to five murders. On March 14, 2023, he pleaded guilty in the shooting. On December 16, 2024, he was sentenced to death.

On November 14, 2019, at Saugus High School in Santa Clarita, California, United States, a school shooting occurred when a student with a pistol, identified as 16-year-old Nathaniel Berhow, shot five schoolmates, killing two, before killing himself.

On February 26, 2013, Santa Cruz Police Department officers Sergeant Loran Baker and Detective Elizabeth Butler were shot and killed during an investigation. After a short interaction regarding an allegation and a negotiation to be placed under arrest, Jeremy Goulet shot both officers who were standing in front of his house, and then stole an officer's service pistol and their unmarked car. Goulet fled in the police vehicle, but later ditched it when a heavy presence of officers arrived on scene. Goulet made an attempt to flee on foot, but was killed in a shootout with four other officers.

On May 15, 2023, a mass shooting occurred in Farmington, New Mexico, United States. Three people were killed, and six others were wounded, before the shooter, 18-year-old Beau Wilson, was killed by police.

The Fresno meat plant shooting was a mass shooting that occurred on the morning of November 6, 2012, at the Valley Protein meat processing plant in central Fresno, California. Lawrence Nathaniel Jones, a 42-year-old employee, shot four of his coworkers with a stolen handgun, killing two. He then reloaded his weapon as he walked outside, where he shot himself in the head. He was pronounced dead at the hospital three hours later.
