Cohere Technologies is a telecoms software company based in San Jose, California that develops technology for boosting the network performance of 4G and 5G spectrum in wireless networks. [1] [2] Cohere holds the patents for the Orthogonal Time Frequency Space (OTFS) 2D modulation technique used to improve the performance of 4G and 5G networks and is being considered as a waveform for the future 6G wireless standard. History

Cohere Technologies was founded in 2011 by Shlomo Rakib, a serial entrepreneur, and Ronny Hadani, an associate professor of mathematics at the University of Texas, Austin. [5] [6] The pair patented the OTFS waveform in 2010. [7]

Ray Dolan, co-founder of Flarion Technologies (acquired by Qualcomm in 2006), joined Cohere Technologies as the company's chairman and CEO in October 2018. [8]

Cohere Technologies’ first trials of OFTS with a carrier took place at Telefónica in 2018. [9]

In 2018, the company changed its focus to the use of Delay-Doppler-based channel detection, estimation and prediction, as well as precoding software to improve 4G and 5G wireless systems with its Universal Spectrum Multiplier software. [10]

In 2020, Cohere Technologies won a GSMA GLOMO award for "Best Network Software Breakthrough,” [11] [12] [13] and was also shortlisted for the award in 2023. [14]

In February 2023, Cohere announced a collaboration with telecommunications company Mavenir. Cohere will assist Mavenir in its transition to open RAN technology, including OTFS. [15]

Cohere co-announced the Multi-G O-RAN initiative in April 2023 in collaboration with Intel, Juniper Networks, Mavenir and VMware. [16] [17] The initiative will provide frameworks and interfaces to support the coexistence of 4G, 5G, and other waveforms in the future. [16] Carriers supporting the initiative include Vodafone, Telstra, and Bell Canada. [16]

Cohere currently holds more than 300 patents relating to 4G, 5G, and OTFS. [18]

Co-founder Shlomo Rakib currently serves as Cohere's CTO. [19]

Products

Announced in 2021, Cohere’s Universal Spectrum Multiplier (USM) software is designed to boost the performance of 4G and 5G FDD or TDD networks and can be integrated by network equipment suppliers in the radio access network (RAN) or as an xApp/RIC in the telco cloud. [20] [21] [22] This technology has been tested by mobile operators such as Vodafone, [23] Deutsche Telekom, [24] and Telstra. [25]

Cohere also announced the Dynamic Network Alignment (DNA) tool in 2023, which is an automated MU-MIMO beamforming solution for calibrating 4G and 5G networks using existing network and spectrum assets. [26] [27]

AirHop Communications is a privately funded American corporation based in San Diego, CA. AirHop develops radio access network (RAN) software that addresses the installation, operation and performance challenges of multi-layer deployments of small cells in 3G and 4G networks. AirHop's customers are typically base station equipment vendors for wireless network operators.

3G mobile telephony was relatively slow to be adopted globally. In some instances, 3G networks do not use the same radio frequencies as 2G so mobile operators must build entirely new networks and license entirely new frequencies, especially so to achieve high data transmission rates. Other delays were due to the expenses of upgrading transmission hardware, especially for UMTS, whose deployment required the replacement of most broadcast towers. Due to these issues and difficulties with deployment, many carriers delayed acquisition of these updated capabilities.

Orthogonal Time Frequency Space (OTFS) is a 2D modulation technique that transforms the information carried in the Delay-Doppler coordinate system. The information is transformed in the similar time-frequency domain as utilized by the traditional schemes of modulation such as TDMA, CDMA, and OFDM. It was first used for fixed wireless, and is now a contending waveform for 6G technology due to its robustness in high-speed vehicular scenarios.

Vodafone Australia is an Australian telecommunications brand providing mobile and fixed broadband services. Vodafone’s mobile network covers more than 23 million Australians, and Vodafone has commenced the rollout of its 5G mobile network. Vodafone NBN fixed broadband services are available in capital cities and selected regional centres. Vodafone is the third-largest wireless carrier in Australia, with 5.8 million subscribers as of 2020.

Ronny Hadani is an Israeli-American mathematician, specializing in representation theory and harmonic analysis, with applications to signal processing. He is known for developing Orthogonal Time Frequency and Space (OTFS) modulating techniques, a method used for making wireless 5G communications faster, that is also being considered for use in 6G technology. The technology is being used by several wireless 5G related companies and Cohere Technologies, a company he has co-founded.

Shlomo Rakib is an Israeli electrical engineer known for his work on Orthogonal Time Frequency and Space (OTFS) and other engineering topics. He is the holder of several patents and co-founder and current Chief Technology Officer of Cohere Technologies, which he had co-founded with Ronny Hadani. He also co-founded Terayon in 1993.

Delay Doppler coordinates are coordinates typically used in a radar technology-inspired approach to measurement. When used in wireless communication, the Delay Doppler domain mirrors the geometry of the reflectors comprising the wireless channel, which changes far more slowly than the phase changes experienced in the rapidly varying time-frequency domain.
