Major General Colin James Boag, [1] CB CBE is a senior British Army officer.
Boag graduated from the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst and was commissioned at the rank of second lieutenant in the Corps of Royal Engineers on 6 August 1983, [1] with seniority from 3 May 1981, and immediately promoted to lieutenant, with seniority from 3 May 1983. [2] He was promoted to captain on 3 November 1987 [3] and attained field officer status with promotion to major on 30 September 1991. [4]
Having served in the Balkans in 1995, Boag was awarded the Queen's Commendation for Valuable Service, in recognition of "gallant and distinguished services in the former Republic of Yugoslavia" in 1996. [5] Boag was promoted to lieutenant colonel in June 1997, [6] colonel in June 2001 [7] and to brigadier, the British Army's highest field officer rank, on 31 December 2003. [8] Boag was appointed Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE) in the 2006 Queen's Birthday Honours. [9]
Boag attained general officer status with promotion to the substantive rank of major general on 25 January 2008, whereupon he assumed the appointment of Headquarters Land Command/Headquarters Adjutant General's Command Collocation Programme Team Leader. [10] He was awarded the American Legion of Merit (Degree of Officer), "in recognition of gallant and distinguished services during coalition operations in Iraq", in March 2008 and granted unrestricted permission to wear the decoration on his uniform. [11]
In 2010, Boag served as Chief of Staff to the International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) Joint Command, in which capacity he gave a lecture to personnel at Headquarters Allied Rapid Reaction Corps, who were preparing for deployment to Afghanistan. [12] He became General Officer Commanding Support Command at Aldershot in 2011. [13]
Boag was appointed Companion of the Order of the Bath (CB) in the 2013 Birthday Honours. [14]
Field Marshal Michael John Dawson Walker, Baron Walker of Aldringham, is a retired British Army officer. Commissioned in 1966, he served in Cyprus, Northern Ireland, and in a variety of staff posts in the United Kingdom until 1984. After being given command of a battalion, he was mentioned in despatches for his service during a second tour of duty in Northern Ireland, this time in Derry, and subsequently served a tour on Gibraltar. He was promoted to brigadier, unusually having never held the rank of colonel, and took command of 20th Armoured Brigade in Germany before becoming I Corps chief of staff.
General Sir John George Reith, is a retired senior British Army officer who was the Deputy Supreme Allied Commander Europe within the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) from October 2004 to October 2007.
General John Nicholas Reynolds Houghton, Baron Houghton of Richmond, is a retired senior British Army officer and former Chief of the Defence Staff (CDS) of the British Armed Forces. He was appointed CDS in July 2013, following the retirement of General Sir David Richards. He served as Commanding Officer of the 1st Battalion, the Green Howards in Northern Ireland during The Troubles and later became Commander of the 39th Infantry Brigade in Northern Ireland. He deployed as Senior British Military Representative and Deputy Commanding General, Multi-National Force – Iraq during the Iraq War. Later, he became Chief of Joint Operations at Permanent Joint Headquarters and served as Vice-Chief of the Defence Staff until assuming the position of CDS. Houghton retired from the British Army in July 2016, and was succeeded as CDS by Air Chief Marshal Sir Stuart Peach.
General Sir Frank Edward Kitson, is a retired British Army officer and writer on military subjects, notably low intensity operations. He rose to be Commander-in-Chief UK Land Forces from 1982 to 1985 and was Aide-de-Camp General to Queen Elizabeth II from 1983 to 1985.
