College Hockey in the D, [1] formerly College Hockey at the Joe, is a series of college ice hockey events sponsored by the Detroit Red Wings of the National Hockey League and hosted at Little Caesars Arena in Detroit, Michigan. The marquee event is the Great Lakes Invitational, held around New Year's Day.
Ice hockey is a contact team sport played on ice, usually in a rink, in which two teams of skaters use their sticks to shoot a vulcanized rubber puck into their opponent's net to score points. The sport is known to be fast-paced and physical, with teams usually consisting of six players each: one goaltender, and five players who skate up and down the ice trying to take the puck and score a goal against the opposing team.
The Detroit Red Wings are a professional ice hockey team based in Detroit. They are members of the Atlantic Division in the Eastern Conference of the National Hockey League (NHL) and are one of the Original Six teams of the league. Founded in 1926, the team was known as the Detroit Cougars from then until 1930. For the 1930–31 and 1931–32 seasons the team was called the Detroit Falcons, and in 1932 changed their name to the Red Wings.

The series was renamed in 2017 when the Red Wings moved from Joe Louis Arena following the end of the 2016–17 season. The Joe previously hosted the Final Four of the Central Collegiate Hockey Association conference tournament from 1982 until 2013, when the CCHA dissolved. The Joe also hosted the Final Four of the 2015 and 2017 Big Ten Men's Ice Hockey Tournament.
Joe Louis Arena is a defunct multi-purpose arena in Downtown Detroit. Completed in 1979 at a cost of $57 million as a replacement for Olympia Stadium, it sits adjacent to Cobo Center on the bank of the Detroit River and was accessible by the Joe Louis Arena station on the Detroit People Mover. The venue is named after former heavyweight champion boxer Joe Louis, who grew up in Detroit.
The 2016–17 Detroit Red Wings season was the 91st season for the National Hockey League (NHL) franchise that was established on September 25, 1926. It was the Red Wings' final season at Joe Louis Arena before their move to Little Caesars Arena for the 2017–18 season. This season also marked the end of the Red Wings playoff streak at 25 consecutive seasons, and was their first losing season since 1990–91.
The Central Collegiate Hockey Association (CCHA) was a college athletic conference that participated in the NCAA's Division I as a hockey-only conference. The majority of its members were located in the states of Michigan and Ohio, although it also had teams located in Alaska, Illinois, Indiana, Missouri, and Nebraska over the course of its existence.
Other events include an annual game between Michigan State University and the University of Michigan, a tradition that is still practiced in the new Big Ten Hockey Conference. In some seasons from the CCHA days, another annual game featured Lake Superior State University versus either Michigan or Michigan State in alternating years, but this tradition has apparently been discontinued.

MSU was founded in 1855 and served as a model for land-grant universities later created under the Morrill Act of 1862. The university was founded as the Agricultural College of the State of Michigan, one of the country's first institutions of higher education to teach scientific agriculture. The University of Michigan, often simply referred to as Michigan, is a public research university in Ann Arbor, Michigan. The university is Michigan's oldest; it was founded in 1817 in Detroit, as the Catholepistemiad, or University of Michigania, 20 years before the territory became a state. The school was moved to Ann Arbor in 1837 onto 40 acres (16 ha) of what is now known as Central Campus. Since its establishment in Ann Arbor, the university campus has expanded to include more than 584 major buildings with a combined area of more than 34 million gross square feet spread out over a Central Campus and North Campus, two regional campuses in Flint and Dearborn, and a Center in Detroit. The university is a founding member of the Association of American Universities.
Lake Superior State University is a small public university in Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan. It is Michigan's smallest public university, with an enrollment around 3,000 students. Due to its proximity to the border, notably the twin city of Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario, LSSU has many Canadian students and maintains a close relationship with its international neighbor. In a sign of its unique situation, LSSU has the Canadian and United States flags on its campus, and both Canadian and American national anthems are sung at athletic events.
