The College of Charleston sailing team is generally considered one of the top programs in the nation, as the team is consistently ranked among Sailing World Magazine's top-20 collegiate teams year in and year out, [2] and has received the Leonard M. Fowle Trophy to the best overall collegiate team in 1986, 1988, 1998, 2007, 2012, 2015, 2017, 2018 and 2021.
They are members of the Intercollegiate Sailing Association (ICSA), the governing body for collegiate sailing, and compete at the South Atlantic Intercollegiate Sailing Association (SAISA).

The Cougars have had over 100 All-Americans, five college sailors of the year (1988, 1991, 1994, 2013 and 2018), two women's college sailors of the year (2006 and 2010), and two Robert H. Hobbs Sportsmanship Awards (2004 and 2016). [3] [4]
Juan Ignacio Maegli, Stefano Peschiera and Paris Henken competed at the 2016 Summer Olympics in the men's Laser and women's 49erFX classes.
The home for the College of Charleston sailing program is the J. Stewart Walker, Jr. Sailing Complex, located in the Patriots Point Marina in Mount Pleasant, South Carolina just across the Cooper River Bridge from the Charleston peninsula. It was dedicated on May 15, 1999.
The fleet of the College of Charleston Sailing Team's includes 18 FJs, 18 420s, 8 Lasers and 10 J/22s.

The South Atlantic Intercollegiate Sailing Association (SAISA) is a conference in the Intercollegiate Sailing Association and was founded April 25, 1964. SAISA encompasses a geographic area that includes Tennessee, North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia, Florida, and northern Alabama. There are 33 active members, which include both public and private universities.
The New England Intercollegiate Sailing Association (NEISA) is one of the seven conferences affiliated with the Inter-Collegiate Sailing Association (ICSA) that schedule and administer regattas within their established geographic regions.
The NC State Wolfpack is the nickname of the athletic teams representing North Carolina State University. The Wolfpack competes at the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division I as a member of the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) for all sports since the 1953–54 season. The Charleston Cougars are the varsity intercollegiate athletic teams representing the College of Charleston in Charleston, South Carolina. The Cougars compete in NCAA Division I and are currently members of the Colonial Athletic Association. The university sponsors 20 varsity sports teams including men and women's basketball, cross country, golf, soccer and tennis; women's-only dance team, equestrian, beach volleyball, softball, track and field and volleyball; men's-only baseball; and co-ed sailing and cheerleading. The university's most successful sports are co-ed sailing, which has won 14 national championships since 1986, women's volleyball, which has qualified for the NCAA Tournament seven times since 2002 and men's baseball, which has qualified for the NCAA Tournament seven times since 2004.

The United States Merchant Marine Academy's intercollegiate sports teams are called the Mariners and they compete in the Division III of the NCAA, generally as once a charter member of the Landmark Conference. In 2016, they returned to the Skyline Conference in all sports. The South Florida Bulls sailing team represents the University of South Florida in the sport of sailing. The team competes in the South Atlantic Intercollegiate Sailing Association within the Inter-Collegiate Sailing Association. The Bulls are coached by Allison Jolly, gold medalist in the first Olympic women's sailing event at the 1988 Summer Olympics in Seoul. She has coached the team since 2004. The team's home venue is the Donald A. Haney Landing Sailing Center on the University of South Florida St. Petersburg campus. It is the university's only varsity sport based on the St. Petersburg campus.
