Committee on Medium-term Path on Financial Inclusion was an experts committee formed by the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) on 15 July 2015 to create a five-year plan for financial inclusion in India. It was headed by Deepak Mohanty, executive director of RBI.

It published its final report in December 2015 with a number of recommendations split into 10 broad areas. [1] [2]

Objective

The objective of the committee was to examine the existing policy regarding financial inclusion and to form a five-year action plan. [4] [5] The plan had several components with regard to payments, deposits, credit, social security transfers, pension and insurance. [5]

The Reserve Bank of India, abbreviated as RBI, is India's central bank and regulatory body responsible for regulation of the Indian banking system. The State Bank of Pakistan (SBP) is the central bank of Pakistan. Its Constitution, as originally laid down in the State Bank of Pakistan Order 1948, remained basically unchanged until 1 January 1974, when the bank was nationalised and the scope of its functions was considerably enlarged. The State Bank of Pakistan Act 1956, with subsequent amendments, forms the basis of its operations today. The headquarters are located in the financial capital of the country in Karachi. The bank has a fully owned subsidiary with the name SBP Banking Services Corporation (SBP-BSC), the operational arm of the Central Bank with Branch Office in 16 cities across Pakistan, including the capital Islamabad and the four provincial capitals Lahore, Karachi, Peshawar, Quetta. Raghuram Govind Rajan is an Indian economist and the Katherine Dusak Miller Distinguished Service Professor of Finance at the University of Chicago's Booth School of Business. Between 2003 and 2006 he was Chief Economist and director of research at the International Monetary Fund. From September 2013 through September 2016 he was the 23rd Governor of the Reserve Bank of India. In 2015, during his tenure at the RBI, he became the Vice-Chairman of the Bank for International Settlements.

Shyamala Gopinath is Chairperson of HDFC Bank, India's largest lender by market capitalization. Ms. Gopinath is a former deputy governor of the Reserve Bank of India (RBI), a position she served for seven years.

Rakesh Mohan is an Indian economist and former Deputy Governor of Reserve Bank of India. He is the Vice Chairperson of Indian Institute for Human Settlements. He was appointed in November 2012 as an executive director of the IMF for a three-year term, and in April 2010, he joined Nestlé India, as a non-executive director. He is currently a part time member of Prime Minister's Economic Advisory Council (PMEAC).

RBI Thiruvananthapuram is a branch office of the Reserve Bank of India, with its jurisdiction covering the State of Kerala and the Union Territory of Lakshadweep. This regional office contains nearly all of the major departments of Reserve Bank of India. The only exceptions are the departments of Foreign Exchange (FED) and Economic Policy & Research (DEPR), both of which are housed at the bank's sub-office at Kochi. The Fiscal Responsibility and Budget Management Act, 2003 (FRBMA) is an Act of the Parliament of India to institutionalize financial discipline, reduce India's fiscal deficit, improve macroeconomic management and the overall management of the public funds by moving towards a balanced budget and strengthen fiscal prudence. The main purpose was to eliminate revenue deficit of the country and bring down the fiscal deficit to a manageable 3% of the GDP by March 2008. However, due to the 2007 international financial crisis, the deadlines for the implementation of the targets in the act was initially postponed and subsequently suspended in 2009. In 2011, given the process of ongoing recovery, Economic Advisory Council publicly advised the Government of India to reconsider reinstating the provisions of the FRBMA. N. K. Singh is currently the Chairman of the review committee for Fiscal Responsibility and Budget Management Act, 2003, under the Ministry of Finance (India), Government of India.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Deepak Mohanty</span> Indian economist

Deepak Mohanty is an economist. He holds the post of Chairperson of India’s pension regulator, Pension Fund Regulatory and Development Authority(PFRDA). He was Chief Economic Advisor, Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FICCI) and was an independent Director on a few companies’ Boards. Prior to that, Dr. Mohanty was Whole Time Member, PFRDA.

Kamalesh Chandra Chakrabarty or K. C. Chakrabarty, was an Indian banker who served as one of the four Deputy Governors of the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) from 15 June 2009 to 25 April 2014, resigning three months ahead of the completion of his term. He was noted for his contributions to advancing financial inclusion and financial literacy during his time at the central bank.

Deepali Pant Joshi is a former executive director of the Reserve Bank of India. She is a development economist and a writer on economic subjects. Her professional responsibilities have included the Department of Currency Management, Legal Department and Premises Department. She was the First Appellate authority under the Right to Information Act, as well as the RBI nominee on the governing council of the Institute of Banking Personnel Selection (IBPS) and director on the board of Bharatiya Reserve Bank Note Mudran Private Limited (BRBNMPL).

Committee on Comprehensive Financial Services for Small Businesses and Low Income Households was an expert committee formed by Raghuram Rajan on 23 September 2013, after he was appointed as the governor of the Reserve Bank of India (RBI). It was headed by Nachiket Mor. The objective of the panel was to study various aspects of financial inclusion in India. The panel submitted its final report on 7 January 2014.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Payments bank</span> New model of banks initiative by Reserve Bank of India

Payments banks are a new model of banks, conceptualised by the Reserve Bank of India (RBI), which cannot issue credit. These banks can accept a restricted deposit, which is currently limited to ₹200,000 per customer and may be increased further. These banks cannot issue loans and credit cards. Both current account and savings accounts can be operated by such banks. Payments banks can issue ATM cards or debit cards and provide online or mobile banking. Bharti Airtel set up India's first payments bank, Airtel Payments Bank.

Small finance banks (SFB) are a type of niche banks in India. Banks with a SFB license can provide basic banking service of acceptance of deposits and lending. The aim behind these is to provide financial inclusion to sections of the economy not being served by other banks, such as small business units, small and marginal farmers, micro and small industries and unorganised sector entities.

N. S. Vishwanathan was the deputy governor of Reserve Bank of India. He was appointed on 28 June 2016, by the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet of Government of India. He replaced H. R. Khan, whose term ended on 4 July 2016.

The Monetary Policy Committee is responsible for fixing the benchmark interest rate in India. The meetings of the Monetary Policy Committee are held at least four times a year and it publishes its decisions after each such meeting.
