Today, the foundation operates mainly in the territories of Piedmont, Liguria and Valle d'Aosta with total assets amounting to 6.7 billion euros. [3]

History

The Compagnia di San Paolo Foundation was born in Turin in 1563; Piedmont at the time was in a state of great economic degradation due to the long wars between France and Spain. Emmanuel Philibert, back in possession of the Duchy of Savoy in 1559 due to the peace of Cateau-Cambrésis, initiated a profound political, military and cultural reorganization of his territories.

On 25 January 1563, seven citizens of Turin founded the Confraternita della catholica fede in Turino sotto l'invocazione di San Paolo (Catholic confraternity in Turin under the invocation of Saint Paul) with the dual objective of helping the poor after years of foreign domination and stemming the expansion of the Protestant reform. Aid to the destitute, in particular to impoverished nobles or bourgeois, was carried out with home assistance.

In 1579 the Confraternity founded the city's Monte di Pietà to try to stem the phenomenon of usury that affected the lower classes, through the payment of small loans against pledges. About a decade later it also dedicated itself to assisting women with the provision of dowries through the establishment of the Casa del Soccorso and, in 1683, of the Casa del Deposito, which provides hospitality to women victim of exploitation and violence.

In 1595, the Ufficio Pio was set up to manage the charitable and religious activities of the company. The Paolini collaborated in the construction of the Church dei Santi Martiri, to the establishment of the Collegio dei nobili convittori which dealt with the education of young people from wealthy families (today the seat of the boarding school Convitto Umberto I) and of the Albergo di Virtue, an institution aimed at the professional training of beggars in the manufacturing and mechanic arts.

In the mid-seventeenth century, the Confraternity promoted the opening of the Ospedale della Carità and, in the following century, ensured financial support for the Ospedale dei Pazzi, which today houses the registry, civil, demographic and electoral services.

The institution's assets, which also increased thanks to the numerous bequests of Piedmontese families, led to intense financial activity, culminating in the assumption of public debt administration in 1653.

In 1804, the Monte di Pietà was reorganized by the French government emphasizing its banking nature. Reintegrated in its functions in 1814, the Compagnia took charge of the management of the Monte di Pietà at interest and of the Monte di Pietàat no interest and between 1824 and 1851, it was responsible for providing the health service for the indigent, with basic medical care and specialist.

In 1907 it financed the establishment of the initial capital of the Institute of social housing and later in the financing of the construction of the new headquarters of the city's hospital San Giovanni Battista "Molinette", completed in 1935.

At the end of 1991, within the framework of the "Amato-Carli" law, credit activities were delegated to a newly established joint-stock company, Istituto Bancario San Paolo di Torino S.p.A., while activities of public interest and social utility remained in the "old San Paolo", which becomes, in homage to its original history, Compagnia di San Paolo. The financial value of the banking company is transformed into philanthropic assets, partly kept by the Company in the form of shares of what has become the Intesa Sanpaolo group over time, partly reinvested according to principles of diversification. To date, the Compagnia is a private law foundation, governed by its own Statute adopted in March 2000, associated with ACRI - Association of Foundations and Savings Banks and member of the European Foundation Centre.

In 2021, it opened the Gallerie d'Italia, a new museum in Turin. [4]
