The Compagnie du Kasai (Kasai Company) was a Belgian company established to exploit the resources of the Kasai River basin in the Congo Free State. At first it was mainly involved in harvesting wild rubber, but later moved into palm oil and mining.

Background

The German Wissman explored the Kasai River in 1884 and established a short-lived commercial establishment there. The Sandford Exploring Expedition started commercial operations on the river and founded the Luebo post in 1887, then in 1888 merged with SAB. In 1890 Le Marinal created Lusambo. The Société Hollandaise arrived in the region in 1890, and for six years SAB and the Société Hollandaise were the only traders in the region. In 1892 rules were established for harvesting rubber, and new companies began to move into the Kasai basin: [1]

A decree was issued in 1899 enforcing planting of rubber-bearing lianas, because harvesting wild lianas would not be enough to meet the expanding needs of the rubber market. By this time there were 14 companies employing 176 expatriates in 41 establishments. Cut-throat competition was keeping prices low, but also creating financial instability and reducing the amount paid to the local workers. [1]

The Congo Free State and the 14 companies agreed to form a new body, the Compagnie du Kasai (Kasai Company) with head office at Dima in the Congo and administrative headquarters in Belgium. It would take over the facilities of the 14 companies such as buildings, boats and stocks, and all of their employees. The companies could keep the plantations they had created and their management, with certain restrictions. The purpose would be to harvest and trade plant products and ivory, as well as related commercial, industrial and agricultural operations. Capital of one million francs would be equally divided between the Congo Free State, which would receive half, and the 14 companies. The state would have representatives on the board of directors and management committee. The statutes of the company were published in the Official Bulletin in 1901. [1]

The company did not receive a concession like Abir or the Société Anversoise du Commerce au Congo (SCA), and its representatives were not commissioned to raise tax. It could therefore only obtain rubber and other forest products by dealing with the natives. [2]

Early years (1901–1918)

The company began a rubber plantation at Bena Makima in October 1904. In a unique arrangement, four missionaries of the order of Scheut fathers took charge of planting rubber and of gathering wild rubber in exchange for having their goods transported at no charge on the steamer from Kinshasa to Luebo. The missionaries ran the plantation using bonded Luba laborers, former slaves from eastern and central Kasai who had recently been liberated. [3] On 5 November 1904 the post was attacked by the Kuba. [4] The Europeans managed to drive off the attackers with the help of their foreign workers, and were relieved on 9 November by soldiers of the Force Publique led by De Cock and Hubin, who arrived from the east. [5] An official report in 1905 found that agents of the company had undertaken armed expeditions against the local people. [6]

The company was initially profitable. In the 1905 financial year it produced 1,400 tons of rubber, or 28% of total production in the Congo Free State. [7] In the 1906 financial year production had risen to 1,500 tons. Profits fell in 1907 due to lower selling prices in Europe, and fell again in 1908. The company decided to expand into some far eastern businesses. In 1908 the Belgian government took over control of what became the Belgian Congo. [7] By 1910 a factory of the company had been established near Misumba, which had about two thousand inhabitants. [8] The company had made successful trial rubber plantations there. [9]

In 1910 there was a dispute between the government and the company. [7] By decree of 22 February 1910 the Kasai basin was opened to free trade. In 1911 the company bought out the state's share and became fully independent. [10] The company lost money in 1912 and 1913 due to the collapse of the rubber and copal markets. In 1913 the company was given the right to prospect for minerals south of the 5th parallel and in part of the Aruwimi River basin near Kilo-Moto. There were continued losses in 1914 and 1915, when the company started to buy palm nuts, and exported 385 tons. The company was profitable in 1916 and 1917, and broke even in 1918. That year it exported 593 tons of rubber, 3,536 tons of palm kernels, 90 tons of palm oil, 5 tons of ivory and 7 tons of beeswax. [10]

Later history (post-1918)

In 1919 the company issued new shares to raise capital. Mining concessions were divided between the Société minière du Kasai and the Syndicat général de recherches minières du Kasai. All mining operations were to be undertaken by Forminière. [10] The Société minière du Kasai, a mining subsidiary, was created in July 1920. Meanwhile, La Forminière had taken over operation of diamond mines started by the Compagnie du Kasai. In 1922 the company was granted concessions for palm oil exploitation, consisting of five circles with a radius of 20 kilometres (12 mi). This now became the company's main activity. Three of the circles were improved by creating plantations of selected palms, growing food crops, building a road network and organizing road and water transport. By 1930 the rubber trade had virtually ended. [11]

During the economic crisis of the 1930s the company reduced overhead as far as possible. By 1934 the company was the second largest palm oil producer in the country after HCB. By 1935 it had sold shares to the Société anonyme belge pour le commerce du Haut-Congo (SAB) in exchange for a 3,000 hectares (7,400 acres) plot in the Manghay region where it was cultivating coffee and cocoa trees. It had 7 steam oil mills, 10 manual oil mills, a coffee plant, cocoa processing plant, rubber plant and a plant for treating rice harvested by the local people. It had a 500 kilometres (310 mi) road network, a fleet of river boats and loading and unloading facilities in Léopoldville and Matadi. It also operated trading posts buying ivory, palm kernels, palm oil, peanuts, copal and textile fibers, and shops selling imported goods to expatriates and locals. [11]

As of 1945 the company was controlled by the Société Générale de Belgique. [12] It continued operating until at least 1955. [13]

    The Société Anversoise was a concession company of the Congo Free State, headquartered in Antwerp. It was, with the Lulonga Company and the Abir Congo Company, one of the main producers of rubber in the Free State. Alongside Abir and the Lulonga Company the Société Anversoise handed back control of the concession to the Congo Free State in 1906. The Société Anversoise merged with Abir in 1911 to form the Compagnie du Congo Belge with a focus of the management of rubber plantations instead of the harvesting of naturally occurring rubber. The Société Anversoise was quoted on the Antwerp Stock Exchange from 27 July 1898.

    Bena Makima is a community in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. It is on the right bank of the Kasai River, a few kilometers downstream from the point where the Lulua River enters the Kasai. It is at the highest navigable point on the Kasai in the dry season.

    The Société internationale forestière et minière du Congo, known as Forminière, was a mining company in the Belgian Congo. Founded by the industrialist Jean Jadot in 1906, the company began diamond mining in Kasai in 1913. At its height, Forminière was involved in gold and silver mining, cotton, palm and rubber cultivation, farming, sawmilling and even owned shops. The Belgian colonial state co-owned 50 percent of the company's capital, the rest being held largely by American shareholders.

It provided service in the eastern part of the colony south of Stanleyville (Kisangani) to serve the settlers and mining operations in Katanga. It operated a combination of river steamer service along the Lualaba River and railway links where the river was not navigable, including a link to Lake Tanganyika. In 1960 it became the Société congolaise des chemins de fer des Grands Lacs.

    The Compagnie du Congo pour le Commerce et l’Industrie (CCCI) was a major conglomerate active in the Congo Free State, Belgian Congo and later the Democratic Republic of the Congo where its subsidiary companies engaged in a wide range of activities in the Congo between 1887 and 1971. These included railway and river transport, mining, agriculture, banking, trading and so on. It was the largest commercial enterprise in the Congo for many years. It went through various mergers in the years that followed before its successor Finoutremer was liquidated in 2000.

    The Société anonyme belge pour le commerce du Haut-Congo (SAB) was a private enterprise in the Congo Free State, later the Belgian Congo, that operated a string of trading stations in the Congo River basin, and exported ivory, rubber and other local products. The ruthless treatment of the local people by SAB agents inspired Joseph Conrad to write his 1899 novel Heart of Darkness.

    The Bus Bloc, or Bloc de la Busira-Momboyo, was a huge concession in the Congo Free State, later the Belgian Congo, operated by the Société anonyme belge pour le commerce du Haut-Congo (SAB). It covered land along and between the Busira River and Momboyo River. In the early days the SAB exploited the local people ruthlessly in their demands for rubber, and many died.

    The Special Committee of Katanga was a parastatal body created in 1900 by the Congo Free State and the Compagnie du Katanga. At first it was responsible for administering the huge Katanga Province on behalf of the Free State and for exploiting the province's mineral resources. Mineral exploration and mining were soon delegated to separate companies. After the Belgian Congo took over from the Free State in 1908, the CSK handed over its administrative powers to the provincial government. However, as a parastatal it remained responsible for many aspects of development in Katanga until independence in 1960, when it was dissolved.

    Cominière was a Belgian holding company active in the Belgian Congo. It was involved in plantations, forestry, mining, railways and other activities. The Congo assets were nationalized when the Democratic Republic of the Congo became independent in 1960. What remained of Cominière was acquired by Lonhro in 1971.

    'La Belgika was a trading company that was active in the Congo Free State and the Belgian Congo. It produced, processed and exported commodities such as rubber, palm oil and coffee, and imported basic goods needed by the local people, which it sold in a network of stores.

    The American Congo Company was a US-owned concessionary company that was active in the Congo Free State and its successor, the Belgian Congo. At first it was focused on rubber extraction, but that soon shifted to diamond mining.

    Odon Jadot was a Belgian railway engineer and administrator. He was responsible for building more than 1,650 kilometres (1,030 mi) of railroad in the Belgian Congo. The lines helped carry copper mined in the Katanga Province to the sea via the ports of Matadi in the Congo, Dilolo in Angola and Beira in Mozambique. They also supported troop movements during World War I (1914–1918) and World War II (1939–1045).

    <span class="mw-page-title-main">Firmin van Bree</span> Belgian engineer

    Firmin van Bree was a Belgian engineer who played a leading role in developing the Belgian companies that exploited the mineral and agricultural resources of the Belgian Congo. Although involved in a wide range of activities, his primary interest was in diamond mining. During World War II it was suspected that he helped supply the Germans with diamonds from the Congo. After the war he retired to Saint-Jean-de-Luz in the south of France, where he owned three villas and had a small chapel and a crypt built, where he is buried.
