Compton are a long-running amateur football club based in Compton, a civil parish near Winchester in Hampshire.
The club are affiliated to the Hampshire Football Association and run numerous sides in all categories (including girls), catering for all standards. The Men's first team are long standing members of the Southampton League.
The club were originally founded in 1954 as Compton & Shawford F.C. and played in the Winchester & District League for many years. In 1972 they became known as Compton F.C. [1]
The early eighties saw the club progress to the North Hants League and after some promising seasons they made a successful application to join the Hampshire League in 1986. [2]
They initially struggled in a tough Division 2 which contained a number of powerful clubs. However, they survived and consolidated their position.
The 1988/89 campaign was the most successful in the club's history. The 1st team finished 7th for what would be their highest final placing, whilst the Reserves won the Southampton Junior 'A' Cup and Junior Division 1 double.
In 1992 they were relegated to Division 3, returned two years later, only to be relegated straight back again. Compton continued to struggle and were finally left the competition in 2002 after a disastrous season. [3]
In an effort to rebuild, Compton disbanded their 1st Team but continued to play in the Southampton League, retaining the Junior Division places held by the Reserves and 'A' side. Aided by a new multi-purpose pavilion, the club has since recovered and progressed to the Senior section and introduced a Veterans side.
Compton have since achieved Charter Status and expanded with the introduction of a large youth section.

Compton FC play at the Memorial Playing Fields, Shepherds Lane, Compton, SO21 2AB. The venue has a large modern multi-purpose pavilion, two football pitches and is shared with the cricket and tennis clubs. [6]
The record attendance of 300 was in August 1990 when the club played an ex-Southampton XI in a charity match.
For many years, Compton's main local rivals were Otterbourne and Twyford but sadly both these clubs no longer exist. Colden Common are now the nearest rivals, although meetings are now rare due to their contrasting fortunes.
