Confluence University of Science and Technology is a technical university located in Kogi State. The institution received full approval from the Nigerian University Commission for all its courses in 2024. [1] [2]

History

On 19 August 2020, the Kogi State Assembly passed a bill to establish another institution in the state alongside the existing ones. [3] In 2024, the NUC approved Medicine, Law, and other core courses to be taught at the school. In February 2024, Anatomy, Physiology, and other medical-related courses were also approved. [4] [5] [6]

In December 2024, the conversion of the Reference Hospital, Okene, into the Confluence University of Science and Technology (CUSTECH) Teaching Hospital was signed into law by Ahmed Usman Ododo and passed by the Kogi State House of Assembly. [7] [8]

Abduction case

On 13 May 2024, students were abducted on campus while they were in the school premises studying for their first-semester exam. The kidnappers entered a classroom, fired gunshots and abducted several students during the attack.

In early May 2024, an undisclosed number of students were rescued by the Kogi State Government after an encounter with the kidnappers at their hideout. [9] [10]

The management of Confluence University of Science and Technology declared a three-day break to mourn the students killed during the attack. [11]

Admission

The school holds admission for students through the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) for 50 courses across 8 faculties in the university, with the minimum JAMB score being 140. [12]

Administration

Confluence University of Science and Technology has a Chancellor as its ceremonial head, while a vice-chancellor carries out the administrative work in the school. The tenure of office is usually 4 non-renewable years.

At the time of its establishment, it was known as Kogi State University, It was later renamed Prince Abubakar Audu University (PAAU) in 2020, after the then sitting governor of Kogi State, who heralded its establishment, and later renamed Kogi State University (KSU) in 2003 by the former governor Ibrahim Idris and subsequently renamed as Prince Abubakar Audu University in 2020 by Governor Alhaji Yahaya Adoza Bello in respect of late Abubakar Audu.

The Ebira people are an ethnic-linguistic group of North central Nigeria. Most Ebira people are from Kogi State and Nasarawa State. Their language is usually classified as Nupoid and within the Benue-Congo branch of the Niger-Congo language family. Until the separation of Kogi State from Kwara State, Okene, located not far from the Niger-Benue confluence, was seen as the administrative center of the Ebira-speaking people in Kogi state. Since the formation of the state, the Ebira Ta'o people are predominantly found in five local governments in Kogi state, namely Adavi, Ajaokuta, Okehi, Okene and Ogori/Magongo. They are also found in large numbers in the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja and Nasarawa in Toto LGA. Also, the Eganyi are found in Ajaokuta LGA. And the Etuno can be found in Igarra town of Ogorimagongo, Okehi and Okene each with their administrative headquarters. Ebira Koto is found in Kogi and Koton Karfe LGA, Bassa LGA, Lokoja in Kogi and Abaji LGA in the Federal Capital Territory, Akoko-Edo LGA, Edo State.

The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) is a Nigerian entrance examination board for tertiary-level institutions. The board conducts Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination for prospective undergraduates into Nigerian universities. The board is also charged with the responsibility to administer similar examinations for applicants to Nigerian public and private monotechnics, polytechnics, and colleges of educations. Western Delta University is located in Oghara, Delta State, Nigeria. It was established in 2007 and is a private university. The National Universities Commission NUC, Nigeria has officially approved Western Delta University WDU.

The Federal Polytechnic, Namoda is based in Kaura-Namoda, Zamfara State, Nigeria. It was founded in June 1983 by President Shehu Shagari, and has over 5,000 students. The Polytechnic is accredited by the National Board for Technical Education. It provides full-time and part-time courses in Technology, Applied Science, Commerce and Management, leading to National Diplomas and Higher National Diplomas. The Polytechnic is the only tertiary educational Institution in the town of 300,000. Currently it has more than 500,000 students. The 2023 Kogi State gubernatorial election was held on 11 November 2023 to elect the Governor of Kogi State. Incumbent APC Governor Yahaya Bello was term-limited and could not seek re-election to a third term in office. Ahmed Usman Ododo — a former state Auditor-General for Local Government — retained the office for the APC by a margin of 24% over first runner-up and SDP nominee Murtala Ajaka.

Abdulrahman Ado Ibrahim was the fourth traditional ruler and Ohinoyi of Ebiraland, a traditional state with headquarters in Okene, Kogi State, Middle Belt, Nigeria. He was a son of the second attah of Ebiraland, Ibrahim Onoruoiza, of the Omadivi clan, who reigned from 1917 to 1954.

Mohammed Ibrahim Idris was a Nigerian politician. He was a former House of Representatives member representing Ankpa, Omala and Olamaboro Federal constituency of Kogi State at the National Assembly from 2011 to 2015. He died on 10 April 2024.
