Constance Coleman Richardson (1905–2002) was an American painter best known for her American Scene landscapes and interplay of light on figures, evocative of Edward Hopper. She attended Vassar College and Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts and was married to art historian and museum director Edgar Preston Richardson from 1931 until his death in 1985.
Daughter of Christopher B. Coleman, secretary of the Indiana Historical Society [4] and professor of history at Butler College, [5] Richardson was born in Berlin [1] [2] [3] and grew up in the Irvington neighborhood of Indianapolis. She graduated from Laurel School in Shaker Heights, Ohio, and attended Vassar College for two years [6] before transferring to the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, where she studied from 1925 until 1928. [5] It was there that she met her future husband, Edgar Preston Richardson, [4] a student of painting who later became an art historian and museum director.
From 1928 to 1930, Richardson lived in Indianapolis. Constance lived in Detroit from 1931–1962 while Edgar worked at Detroit Institute of Arts, where he served as assistant director from 1933–1945, and as director from 1945–1962. [7]
Her first landscapes date to the summers the couple spent in Vermont and New York; she later worked along the Great Lakes before discovering the West, and many of her later works were painted in Wyoming. She exhibited widely and received numerous prizes.
Richardson relocated with her husband to Delaware in 1962 when he became director of the Winterthur Museum. [7]
In 1985, she was living in Philadelphia. [5] Many of her paintings are concerned with the effects of light on the figure and on the landscape. [8] She also painted portraits and genre scenes in addition to landscapes; her work has been described as reminiscent of Edward Hopper. [6]
Richardson's 1930 painting Street Light, owned by the Indianapolis Museum of Art, was included in the inaugural exhibition of the National Museum of Women in the Arts, American Women Artists 1830–1930, in 1987. [5] As of February 10, 2017, the Indianapolis Museum of Art owns three works by Richardson. [9] The painting Fourth of July is owned by the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts. [10] As of July 20, 2020, the Detroit Institute of Arts owns six of her works. [11] Letters between Richardson and her husband are currently held by the Archives of American Art. [12]
The Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts (PAFA) is a museum and private art school in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. It was founded in 1805 and is the first and oldest art museum and art school in the United States.
Alice Schille (1869–1955) was an American watercolorist and painter from Columbus, Ohio. Patty Prather Thum was an American artist from Louisville, Kentucky known for her landscapes, paintings of roses, and book illustrations. Florence Esté was an American painter in oils born in Cincinnati, Ohio. She also worked in watercolors, pastels, and as an etcher and engraver. She was particularly well known for her landscapes, which were said to have been influenced by Japanese artworks and were noted for their "harmony of color". Her obituary in the New York Times referred to her as "one of the best known women landscape painters."
Nina Belle Ward (1885-1944), an American painter, was born to James Pegram Ward and Martha Vesta Payne on January 23, 1885, in Rome, Georgia. After attending high school in Chattanooga, Tennessee, she attended New York University's School of Pedagogy from 1902 to 1903, after which she became a student at the St. Louis School of Fine Arts during the 1905–06 academic year and won silver and bronze medals as well as an honorable mention for her color and black and white portraits, From 1907 through 1912 she attended the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts (PAFA) where she won Cresson Traveling fellowships in 1908, 1909 and 1911 allowing her to visit England, Wales, the Netherlands, France, Switzerland, Austria, Germany, Belgium and Spain.

Elizabeth Osborne is an American painter who lives and works in Philadelphia. Working primarily in oil paint and watercolor, her paintings are known to bridge ideas about formalist concerns, particularly luminosity with her explorations of nature, atmosphere and vistas. Beginning with figurative paintings in the 1960s and '70s, she moved on to bold, color drenched, landscapes and eventually abstractions that explore color spectrums. Her experimental assemblage paintings that incorporated objects began an inquiry into psychological content that she continued in a series of self-portraits and a long-running series of solitary female nudes and portraits. Osborne's later abstract paintings present a culmination of ideas—distilling her study of luminosity, the landscape, and light.
Elizabeth Wentworth Roberts was an American painter who lived and worked in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, Paris, and Concord, Massachusetts. She established the Jennie Sesnan Gold Medal at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, where she had studied and won the Mary Smith Prize. She also studied in Paris at Académie Julian and Florence. In Massachusetts, Roberts founded and funded the Concord Art Association.
The Mary Smith Prize (defunct) was a prestigious art prize awarded to women artists by the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts. It recognized the best work by a Philadelphia woman artist at PAFA's annual exhibition — one that showed "the most originality of subject, beauty of design and drawing, and finesse of color and skill of execution". The prize was founded in 1879 by Russell Smith in memory of his deceased daughter, artist Mary Russell Smith. It was awarded from 1879 to 1968.
Joseph E. Temple Fund Gold Medal (defunct) was a prestigious art prize awarded by the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts most years from 1883 to 1968. A Temple Medal recognized the best oil painting by an American artist shown in PAFA's annual exhibition. Recipients included James Whistler, John Singer Sargent, Winslow Homer, Thomas Eakins, Robert Henri and Edward Hopper.

Edgar Preston Richardson, also known as E. P. Richardson, was an American art historian, museum director, author, and curator. Richardson served as director of the Detroit Institute of Arts (1945–1962) and Winterthur Museum (1963–1966). He authored seven books, served on the boards of the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts (1966–1977) and other arts organizations, and co-founded the Archives of American Art at the Smithsonian in 1954.
