Constantine Vendrame, [1] [2] [3] also known as the "Apostle of Shillong" [4] [5] was a Salesian missionary from Italy who worked for the welfare of Khasis, in North East, India. [6] [7]

Early life and education

Constantine Vendrame was born on 27 August 1893 to Pietro and Elena Fiori in San Martino di Colle Umberto, Treviso, Italy. He joined the Salesian novitiate at Ivrea on 15 September 1913. He completed his study of philosophy and was sent for his regency to the oratory of Chioggia. He also served for a four-year compulsory military service. After the completion of his military service, he pursued his theological formation while working simultaneously in the oratories of Chioggia and Venice. [6]

Priesthood

On 15 March 1924 Vendrame was ordained a Catholic priest by the cardinal Eugenio Tosi at the chapel of the Archiepiscopal seminary of Milan. [6]

Missionary to India

Vendrame arrived in Shillong on 23 December 1924. At the start of the World War II in 1939, Vendrame and another 150 Italian missionaries were put in the concentration camp. After the war Vendrame was asked by Louis Mathias to go to Wandiwash, Tamil Nadu. He came back to Shillong in 1951. He was always busy in preaching gospel, helping needy and bringing people back to the church. [6]

Death

Vendrame died in Dibrugarh, Assam, India, on 30 January 1957. [8] [9] On 1 July 2014 the mortal remains of Constantine Vendrame were moved to the Shrine of Sacred Heart of Jesus, Mawlai, Shillong, India. [10]

The process for canonisation is underway for Constantine Vendrame. [11]

Aurelius Maschio, priest member of the Society of St Francis de Sales, missionary in India, pioneer of the Salesian work in Mumbai, founder of Don Bosco High School (Matunga), was born to Giuseppe Maschio and Orsolina Della Cia on 12 February 1909 at Vazzola, Treviso, Italy. Louis Mathias was the first Catholic bishop of Shillong who later became the Archbishop of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Madras and Mylapore (1935-1952). He belonged to Salesian congregation and came as a missionary to India.

Thomas Menamparampil SDB is the retired archbishop of Guwahati. He served as the bishop of Dibrugarh for 11 years and the Archbishop of Guwahati for 20 years before his retirement on 18 January 2012. He served as the apostolic administrator of Diocese of Jowai appointed by Pope Francis from 3 February 2014 to 15 October 2016.

Oreste Marengo was an Italian Roman Catholic prelate and professed member from the Salesians of Don Bosco. He served as the Bishop of Diburugarh from 1951 until his transferral in 1964 to Tezpur where he served until 1969. From that point until 1979 he served as the apostolic administrator for the new Tura see. He was dedicated since his childhood to joining the missions and in his late adolescence was permitted to go to the missions in India. Marengo often trekked on foot to remote villages where he evangelized to the people and provided for their educational needs as best he could. He was reluctant to accept his episcopal nomination but did not cease his catechizing and evangelizing in his dioceses. His time spent in India saw him learn prior to his ordination under Stefano Ferrando and the Costantino Vendrame.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Francesco Convertini</span> Venerable

Francesco Convertini, SDB was an Italian Catholic priest and member of the Salesians of Don Bosco. He served in the missions in India since arriving there in the mid-1920s and dedicated his apostolate to tending to children suffering from malnutrition and fostering interreligious dialogue and tolerance. He also dedicated himself to preserving the environmental protection of local communities in waste-ridden areas and travelled to various communities to bring forth the Gospel message to all people.

Albert Hemrom is an Indian prelate who has been chosen as Coadjutor Bishop-Elect of Dibrugarh, India and successor of the current bishop. He succeeded as Bishop of the Roman Catholic diocese of Dibrugarh on 15 February 2021.

Giuseppe Cognata was an Italian Catholic bishop and member of the Salesians of Don Bosco. He was the founder of the Salesian Oblates of the Sacred Heart of Jesus, a female religious institute of pontifical right. Due to accusations that were proved false many years after, the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith condemned Mgr. Cognata to be dismissed of his condition of Bishop on 20 December 1939. Monsignor Giuseppe Cognata in Easter 1962 was reinstated by Pope John XXIII in the Episcopate, after the true came out. The Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith announced on 17 February 2020 that Pope Francis has given consent to open the Cause of Beatification of Mons. Giuseppe Cognata, S.D.B.
