Crime Writers On... (sometimes stylized as Crime Writers On or CWO) is a twice weekly podcast hosted by four American true crime authors: Rebecca Lavoie, Kevin Flynn, Toby Ball, and Lara Bricker. [1] The podcast started on December 12, 2014, as a commentary on and review of the hit true crime podcast Serial . [2] [3] [4] Crime Writers On grew to cover journalism and a variety of crime-related pop culture topics including other podcasts, films, and television shows. [5] The panel often provides updates on the real life cases discussed in previous episodes as they develop. [6]

In March 2018, Crime Writers On won the Discover Pod's Podcast Madness 2018, a March Madness style competition for podcasts. [7] [8]

Hosts

Rebecca Lavoie is the Director of On Demand Audio at New Hampshire Public Radio. [9] Lavoie previously worked as a freelance journalist and has co-authored five true crime books with her husband Kevin Flynn. [10] [11] Lavoie also works as a producer, host, or co-host on several other podcasts. [12] [13] [9] She has appeared as an expert on true crime shows, including on Investigation Discovery. [14] [15]

Kevin Flynn, Lavoie's husband and co-author, is a journalist and the author of additional books including American Sweepstakes and Wicked Intentions.[ citation needed ] Flynn regularly appears as an expert on true crime television programs, including, Deadly Sins , Unusual Suspects , and On the Case with Paula Zahn . He also co-hosts of the Law & Order podcast These Are Their Stories, with Lavoie.[ citation needed ]

Toby Ball is a crime noir novelist who has written three books. [16] [17] Ball is also the Program Director of the Crimes Against Children Research Center at the University of New Hampshire. [18] He runs the Partners in Crime Media account on Patreon and hosts other podcasts including Radio Free Dystopia and Strange Arrivals. [19]

Lara Bricker is a private detective and freelance author of three books [20] Bricker hosts a Patreon-exclusive podcast called Leave it to Bricker and a podcast version of her newspaper column, Exeter Life. [21] [22]

Production

Crime Writers On is produced by Partners in Crime Media in Lavoie and Flynn's home in Hopkinton, New Hampshire, formerly known as Square Egg Studios. [23] Episodes are typically uploaded Mondays and Thursdays and receive around 100,000 downloads. [24] The show includes recurring segments like Crime of the Week, Cat of the Week, and True Crime Update segments. The podcast has a presence on Twitter and Facebook. [25] On July 7, 2020, the Crime Writers On began an exclusive partnership with Facebook. The videocast is released on Facebook Watch the day after the audio podcast release. [26]

Occasional shows feature a guest host or interview with an expert on the programming being covered. Recurring guests have included Colin Miller and Rabia Chaudry, co-hosts of Undisclosed, and JAG Lt. Col. James Weirick (ret), host of Talk and Purpose Radio and the Military Justice podcast.[ citation needed ]

The show's original theme song was by Rocksteady Freddie and the New York Ska-Jazz Ensemble. The new version is performed by Ty Gibbons.[ citation needed ]

Public appearances and reception

Crime Writers On has recorded multiple live episodes of the podcast, beginning in 2016. [24] Respective co-hosts have also appeared at conventions and other events to discuss both true crime and their work in podcasting. [27] [28] [29] [30]

On December 5, 2017, the Crime Writers On podcast was parodied by Done Disappeared, a satirical crime podcast, in the "*BONUS EPISODE*".The fictional Crime Writers Off included Vanessa, Steven, Lauren, and Bobby Tall as versions of Lavoie, Flynn, Bricker, and Ball, respectively. [31]

Marc Haynes is an English comedy writer, radio broadcaster and podcaster.

Peter Donaldson is an English podcaster and radio presenter. He featured on the Danny Wallace Saturday show on Xfm, and the Alex Zane breakfast show and is currently one of the presenters on The Football Ramble, Wrestle Me and The Luke and Pete Show podcasts. Donaldson has cohosted the Abroad in Japan podcast with Chris Broad since 2018.

As of 2020, the podcast gets 35 million downloads per month.

<i>The Last Podcast on the Left</i> Dark comedy podcast

The Last Podcast on the Left is a weekly podcast on the Last Podcast Network featuring podcast producer and researcher Marcus Parks and comedian and actor Henry Zebrowski, two longtime friends. Episodes have explored the topics of serial killers, cults, conspiracy theories, UFO sightings, ghosts, cryptids, the occult, and readings of fan-submitted creepypastas. The name is a reference to the 1972 horror movie The Last House on the Left.

<i>Casefile</i> Australian true crime podcast

Casefile True Crime Podcast, or simply Casefile, is an Australian crime podcast that first aired in January 2016 and is hosted by an Australian man who remains anonymous. The podcast is released on a Sunday (EST) for three consecutive weeks, with a break on the fourth week. The series deals with solved or cold criminal cases, often related to well-known murders and serial crimes. Many early episodes relate to Australian cases, although notable crimes from the UK and the US are increasingly featured, and well-known cases from other countries have also been included. Unlike a number of similar podcasts, the series is scripted and narrative, relying primarily on original police or mass-media documents, eyewitness accounts, and interview or public announcement recordings. Larger and more-complex cases have received multiple-week serialised broadcasts, and case updates to previously aired cases are also provided from time to time. The series has been well received, and has won a number of awards since its debut.

<i>Something to Wrestle with Bruce Prichard</i> Wrestling podcast

Something to Wrestle with Bruce Prichard is an audio podcast that discusses topics, events, wrestlers and memorable moments through the lens of WWE executive Bruce Prichard. The show was launched in August 2016 on MLW Radio. The episodes' length typically ranges from two to four hours, and include discussions about previous WWE pay-per-views and former WWE wrestlers. A video version of the podcast called Something Else to Wrestle with Bruce Prichard debuted on the WWE Network on April 18, 2018.

<i>The Fantasy Footballers</i> Sports podcast

The Fantasy Footballers is a sports podcast hosted by Andy Holloway, Jason Moore, and Mike Wright where they provide fantasy football advice. The show runs continuously throughout the year with a minimum of two episodes per week during the offseason.

<i>Blank Check with Griffin & David</i> American film podcast

Blank Check with Griffin & David is a film podcast following the career output of directors who have had significant success and are then offered a figurative blank check to pursue their passion projects. Most episodes focus on a single movie from the director's filmography, and the show is grouped into "miniseries", in which some or all of the director's films are reviewed. The show is hosted by The Atlantic film critic David Sims and actor Griffin Newman. As of November 2023, the podcast is discussing the films of David Fincher. In December 2023, the podcast will cover new releases by past directors followed by the films of Barbra Streisand in January 2024.

Cum Town was a comedy podcast that was hosted by New York City-based comedians Nick Mullen, Stavros Halkias, and Adam Friedland, and produced between 2016 and 2022. During its run, it was consistently one of the most popular podcasts on Patreon and concluded as one of the top 25 comedy podcasts on Spotify and Apple Podcasts. In July 2022, it was succeeded by Mullen and Friedland's spin-off podcast and interview show The Adam Friedland Show.
