Curtis Duffy is an American chef and restaurateur known for the Chicago-based restaurants Ever and Grace. Among his various accolades are Michelin stars and a James Beard Award.

Early life and education

Duffy was born in Newark, Ohio. He lived in Colorado Springs, Colorado until age 12, when his family moved to Johnstown, Ohio. [1] When Duffy was age 19, Duffy's estranged father killed his wife and then himself in a murder-suicide in 1994. [2]

Professional career

Duffy began his career as a professional chef in 2000 working under the namesake restaurant of chef Charlie Trotter in Chicago. [3] In 2003, Duffy worked as pastry chef with Grant Achatz at Trio in Evanston, IL. Duffy left Trio with Achatz to serve as Chef de cuisine at Alinea in Chicago in 2005. [4] Duffy became head chef at Avenues, a restaurant in the Peninsula Hotel Chicago in 2009. Avenues earned two Michelin stars in 2010. [5] Duffy and Michael Muser opened Grace in Chicago's West Loop in December 2012. In 2013, the Robb Report named Grace the best restaurant in the world. [6] Grace earned three stars in the Michelin Guide four years in a row starting in 2015 [7] and closed in December 2017. [8]

Duffy launched Reve Burger in 2020 during the indoor dining shutdown during the COVID-19 pandemic. [9] Reve closed in July 2022. [10] In 2020, Duffy and Muser opened Ever restaurant, [11] which was awarded two Michelin stars in 2021, [12] 2022, [13] and 2023. [14] In 2022, Duffy opened After lounge, and the following year Esquire named After one of the Best Bars in America. [15]

In media

Duffy appeared as a judge for four seasons (2011–2014) on the Chicago Restaurant Pastry Competition reality TV show. [16] The 2015 Netflix documentary For Grace centers on Duffy and his journey to becoming a three-Michelin-starred chef. [17] In 2018 Duffy appeared as a guest judge in the season finale of Top Chef: Colorado. [18] Duffy appeared in Netflix's Iron Chef: Quest for an Iron Legend in 2022 [19] and as a judge on Season 21 of Top Chef. [20] In 2023, season 2, episode 7 of The Bear was filmed inside Ever. Duffy made and plated the dishes that appear in the episode. [21] In 2024, the season 3 finale of The Bear was filmed inside Ever. [22]

Personal life

Duffy is married to Jennifer Duffy. [23] He has two daughters and two stepchildren.

Awards and accolades

The James Beard Foundation named Duffy Best Chef, Great Lakes in 2016. [24] Duffy was inducted into the Disciples d'Escoffier in 2016 [25]

Sixteen was an American restaurant on the sixteenth floor of the Trump International Hotel and Tower in the Near North Side community area of Chicago. Sixteen opened in early February 2008, and an adjoining outdoor patio terrace, named The Terrace at T, opened on June 25, 2009 following the completion of the hotel's construction.

RIA was an American restaurant in Chicago, Illinois. Located in the Waldorf Astoria Chicago, it originally opened in 2009, serving upscale French cuisine. RIA was popular with critics, earning many awards, including two Michelin stars. After losing executive chef Jason McLeod in 2011, RIA closed on July 27, 2012, after replacement Danny Grant left his restaurant position.

Ever is a restaurant in Chicago, Illinois. Established in July 2020, the restaurant earned two Michelin stars in the 2021, 2022 and 2023 Michelin Guides. The restaurant is co-owned by chef Curtis Duffy and his business partner Michael Muser, respectively former head chef and general manager at Grace, a 3-star Michelin restaurant that was abruptly closed in December 2017 after the duo's offer to buy the restaurant was rejected by its investor-owner.

"Forever" is the tenth episode and season finale of the third season of the American comedy-drama television series The Bear. It is the 28th overall episode of the series and was written and directed by series creator Christopher Storer. It was released on Hulu on June 26, 2024, along with the rest of the season.
