Cusp Conference was an annual conference of people from the arts, sciences, technology, business and design.

Contents

The program was intended to provoke cross-pollination of ideas and generate new thinking, in 25 or more presentations over two days.

A conference "about the design of everything" [1] created and hosted by design firm Multiple Inc. [2] (formerly smbolic) [3] and held at the Museum of Contemporary Art Theater in Chicago, [4] Cusp was centered on the idea that virtually everything that exists has been designed - by humans, by nature or by some other force.

Cusp Conference presenters have touched on topics including landscape waste, contemporary dance, electric vehicles, democracy, social media, [5] education, [6] intellectual property law, medicine, [7] virtual worlds, typography, green architecture, evolutionary biology, [8] smell and taste and serious games.

History

Launched in 2008, Cusp Conference presenters and performers have included Adam Curry, Yves Behar, [9] Andy Bichlbaum, [6] Baba Brinkman, [10] Molly Crabapple, [11] Matthew Diffee, [12] Josh Elder, Hartmut Esslinger, iJustine, [5] Richard Farson, John Fetterman, [6] Douglas Gayeton, [5] Kirsty Hawkshaw, [5] Dr. Alan Hirsch, Dr. Carl Hodges, [13] Dr. Ayanna Howard, [5] Michelle Kaufmann, [10] Robert F Kennedy Jr., [1] Rita J. No new conferences have been held following the 2018 conference.

Kenneth Raymond Miller is an American cell biologist, molecular biologist, and former biology professor. MillerKnoll, Inc., doing business as Herman Miller, is an American company that produces office furniture, equipment, and home furnishings. Its best known designs include the Aeron chair, Noguchi table, Marshmallow sofa, Mirra chair, and the Eames Lounge Chair. Herman Miller is also credited with the 1968 invention of the office cubicle under then-director of research Robert Propst.

Bryan M. Cantrill is an American software engineer who worked at Sun Microsystems and later at Oracle Corporation following its acquisition of Sun. He left Oracle on July 25, 2010, to become the Vice President of Engineering at Joyent, transitioning to Chief Technology Officer at Joyent in April 2014, until his departure on July 31 of 2019. He is now the CTO of Oxide Computer company.

The polywell is a design for a fusion reactor based on two ideas: heating ions by concentrating (-) charge to accelerate the ions and trapping a diamagnetic plasma inside a cusp field.

iJustine American YouTube personality (born 1984)

Justine Ezarik is an American YouTuber. She is best known as iJustine, with over one billion views on her YouTube channel. She gained attention as a lifecaster who communicated directly with her millions of viewers on her Justin.tv channel, ijustine.tv. She acquired notability in roles variously described as a "lifecasting star", a "new media star", or one of the Internet's most popular lifecasters. She posted videos on her main channel iJustine.

Yves Béhar is a Swiss-born American designer, entrepreneur, and educator. He is the founder and principal designer of Fuseproject, an industrial design and brand development firm. Béhar is also co-founder and Chief Creative Officer of August Smart Lock, a smart lock company acquired by Assa Abloy in 2017; and co-founder of Canopy, a co-working space based in San Francisco.

Molly Crabapple is an American artist and writer. The Transylvanian Society of Dracula (TSD) is a cultural-historic, non-profit, non-governmental organization. Its members include Romanian and international scholars, folklorists, historians, esoterists, writers, cultural anthropologists, and individuals interested in comparative religion, magic and mythology. The TSD organizes scholarly activities both in Romania and abroad, as well as tours to sites of TSD interest in Romania. Some high ranked Romanian members make money out of the touristic activities of the organization, through the Company of Mysterious Journeys tourist agency. Modifications to this agency have occurred since the founder Nicolae Paduraru died. The Halloween 2011 tour, for example, did not include Bran Castle or Curtea Veche -in spite of what was published in their web site-, but it included a beauty pageant. One of the Romanian members of TSD working at the agency was one of the presenters of such pageant.

Henning Larsen Architects is an international architectural firm based in Copenhagen, Denmark. Founded in 1959 by Henning Larsen, it has around 750 employees.

Richard Farson Ph.D., was an American psychologist, author, and educator. He was the president and chief executive officer of the Western Behavioral Sciences Institute, which he co-founded in 1958 with physicist Paul Lloyd and social psychologist Wayman Crow.

Christiane Paul is chief curator/director of the Sheila C. Johnson Design Center at Parsons School of Design and Professor of Media Studies at The New School, and Adjunct Curator of New Media Arts at the Whitney Museum of American Art in New York City. She is widely known as the author of the book Digital Art, part of the 'World of Art' series published by Thames & Hudson.

Demetri McCamey, Jr. is an American professional basketball player for the Austin Spurs of the NBA G League. These awards for outstanding achievement in the literature of psychological suspense, horror and dark fantasy are presented at Readercon, an annual conference on imaginative literature.

Laura Guido-Clark is an American designer of color, material and texture of consumer products. She has been dubbed an 'Experience Consultant' reflecting her interest and study of human reactions to the look and feel of new products. At NeoCon 2017 she launched a color methodology called Love Good Color. Her approach integrates scientific and aesthetic theories so that emotion and the senses can be considered by designers when using color.
