CyberARTS is a multi-disciplinary, integrated six-year arts and technology specialized program which is offered in a number of schools in Toronto for grade 7 to 12 students in Ontario, Canada. The CyberARTS program has been honoured by Maclean's magazine as one of the best programs in Canada. Many international delegates come from the UK, Spain, the United States and China to study the unique model of this program. In addition to learning art, design, and technology, the students are also taught about important skills such as organization, work ethic, presentation skills, professionalism, career building and post-secondary planning.
Technology is the collection of techniques, skills, methods, and processes used in the production of goods or services or in the accomplishment of objectives, such as scientific investigation. Technology can be the knowledge of techniques, processes, and the like, or it can be embedded in machines to allow for operation without detailed knowledge of their workings. Systems applying technology by taking an input, changing it according to the system's use, and then producing an outcome are referred to as technology systems or technological systems.
Toronto is the provincial capital of Ontario and the most populous city in Canada, with a population of 2,731,571 in 2016. Current to 2016, the Toronto census metropolitan area (CMA), of which the majority is within the Greater Toronto Area (GTA), held a population of 5,928,040, making it Canada's most populous CMA. Toronto is the anchor of an urban agglomeration, known as the Golden Horseshoe in Southern Ontario, located on the northwestern shore of Lake Ontario. A global city, Toronto is a centre of business, finance, arts, and culture, and is recognized as one of the most multicultural and cosmopolitan cities in the world.
Ontario is one of the 13 provinces and territories of Canada and is located in east-central Canada. It is Canada's most populous province accounting for 38.3 percent of the country's population, and is the second-largest province in total area. Ontario is fourth-largest jurisdiction in total area when the territories of the Northwest Territories and Nunavut are included. It is home to the nation's capital city, Ottawa, and the nation's most populous city, Toronto, which is also Ontario's provincial capital.
The CyberARTS program was created in 1995 by a group of educators, principally Sharron Forrest, Tito Faria, Jon Mergler, Mike Morey, Linda Newman, Terry Wensley, Doris Fleming, Katherine Yamashita and Lesley Monette who saw a need for enriched learning through the arts and had a unique vision for digital arts at the [high school and middle school levels. Their purpose was to develop a program for students wanting to specialize in particular subjects within the combined areas of the arts and technology. Art is the foundation of the digital program.
Support for the program initially came from the Don Mills Collegiate Institute, Don Mills Middle School, Northview Heights Secondary School and the North York Board of Education’s Computers in Education Program. The program had educational partnerships with businesses such as Alias/SGIWavefront, Apple Canada, Kodak Canada, Rogers Communications and Softimage and organizations like the Textile Museum of Canada, the Art Gallery of Ontario, Ontario College of Art & Design, Sheridan College and the University of Waterloo School of Architecture.
Don Mills Collegiate Institute (DMCI) is a high school in the community of Don Mills in Toronto. It serves an ethnically diverse student population of approximately 1000. As of 2017, 67% of students speak a first language other than English. The school opened in 1959.
Don Mills Middle School (DMMS) is a middle school in Toronto, Ontario. It is located near the intersection Don Mills Road and Lawrence Avenue. The school was known as Don Mills Junior High until 1986.
Northview Heights Secondary School is a secondary school for grades 9 to 12 in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. It is located in Toronto's north end at the intersection of Bathurst Street and Finch Avenue.

Charles H. Best Middle School is a middle school in North York, Ontario for Grade 4 to 8 students. It is located near Dufferin Street and Finch Avenue, in the Bathurst Manor residential area. The school was named Dufferin Heights Junior High until 1978, when it was re-named in honour of Charles Best, one of the co-discoverers of insulin.
Western Technical-Commercial School(WTCS) is a high school in the High Park North neighbourhood of Toronto, Ontario, Canada. It shares the same building with Ursula Franklin Academy and The Student School. Originally two schools when it was opened, Western Branch Technical School and Western High School of Commerce, the present school is now the product of the merger between the two schools. The main building was constructed in 1927, with the addition being constructed in 1967–1970. The school features such amenities such as a pool and two gyms, a greenhouse, a large library, a media lab, and a large number of computers throughout the building.
Lakeshore Collegiate Institute is a high school serving the New Toronto, Long Branch, Alderwood, and Mimico neighbourhoods. Built in 1950, it was originally known as New Toronto Secondary School until closing in 1983. Lakeshore Collegiate is situated on the northwest corner of Kipling Avenue and Birmingham Street in Ward 3 of the Toronto District School Board.
CyberARTS is an integrated program in which students gain credits in Visual Art, Media Literacy, Communications Technology, Computer Science, Music, Drama, Dance, Media Studies and Co-op. Curriculum in CyberARTS is designed so that the teacher is a facilitator, manager and producer while students take an active role in problem solving the task at hand whether it be creating or publishing children's books' authoring interactive CD-ROMS, organizing a conference or creating a traditional portrait. Each lesson unit in CyberARTS has an integration of at least two of the main CyberARTS subject areas and results in the completion of a major project. Staff and students at both levels work together to expand and improve the knowledge gained by students participating in the projects. The knowledge gained by students on these projects may assist them to make educational and vocational decisions. CyberARTS is also committed to both formal and informal experiences in Cooperative education and seeks in the development of curriculum to provide "real world" projects that extend beyond the classroom. Credits are granted for each course delivered to meet the Ministry outcomes.
Communication is the act of conveying meanings from one entity or group to another through the use of mutually understood signs, symbols, and semiotic rules.
Computer science is the study of processes that interact with data and that can be represented as data in the form of programs. It enables the use of algorithms to manipulate, store, and communicate digital information. A computer scientist studies the theory of computation and the practice of designing software systems.
Music is an art form and cultural activity whose medium is sound organized in time. General definitions of music include common elements such as pitch, rhythm, dynamics, and the sonic qualities of timbre and texture. Different styles or types of music may emphasize, de-emphasize or omit some of these elements. Music is performed with a vast range of instruments and vocal techniques ranging from singing to rapping; there are solely instrumental pieces, solely vocal pieces and pieces that combine singing and instruments. A yearbook, also known as an annual, is a type of a book published annually to record, highlight, and commemorate the past year of a school. The term also refers to a book of statistics or facts published annually. A yearbook often has an overarching theme that is present throughout the entire book.
Fashion design is the art of applying design, aesthetics and natural beauty to clothing and its accessories. It is influenced by cultural and social attitudes, and has varied over time and place. Fashion designers work in a number of ways in designing clothing and accessories such as bracelets and necklaces. Because of the time required to bring a garment onto the market, designers must at times anticipate changes to consumer tastes.
Web design encompasses many different skills and disciplines in the production and maintenance of websites. The different areas of web design include web graphic design; interface design; authoring, including standardised code and proprietary software; user experience design; and search engine optimization. Often many individuals will work in teams covering different aspects of the design process, although some designers will cover them all. The term web design is normally used to describe the design process relating to the front-end design of a website including writing markup. Web design partially overlaps web engineering in the broader scope of web development. Web designers are expected to have an awareness of usability and if their role involves creating markup then they are also expected to be up to date with web accessibility guidelines.

Teachers of the CyberARTs program specialize in visual art education and have had a background as a working professional involved in some aspect of the visual arts. Former experience includes being artists, filmmakers, curators, art administrators, designers and graphic artists.
Entry to the high school program is based on a successful interview, and application package. The interview involves completing a creative activity, such as a still life drawing. The potential student will be assessed in a 15-minute face to face interview with two CyberARTS teachers, and two senior CyberARTS students. It is recommended that the student brings a portfolio and sketchbook. The application package includes a student information sheet, an interest and background form (for students applying in grade 7 or 8 only), a parent nomination form, a creative writing piece, a self-portrait (using only a pencil), and a release of information form. Prospective students are required submit this package to the school of their choice by the beginning of the year.
An interview is a conversation where questions are asked and answers are given. In common parlance, the word "interview" refers to a one-on-one conversation between an interviewer and an interviewee. The interviewer asks questions to which the interviewee responds, usually so information may be transferred from interviewee to interviewer. Sometimes, information can be transferred in both directions. It is a communication, unlike a speech, which produces a one-way flow of information.
Career portfolios are used to plan, organize and document education, work samples and skills. People use career portfolios to apply for jobs, apply to college or training programs. They are more in-depth than a resume, which is used to summarize the above in one or two pages. Career portfolios serve as proof of one's skills, abilities, and potential in the future. Career portfolios are becoming common in high schools, college, and workforce development.
A sketchbook is a book or pad with blank pages for sketching and is frequently used by artists for drawing or painting as a part of their creative process. The exhibition of sketchbooks at the Fogg Art Museum at Harvard University in 2006 suggested that there were two broad categories for classifying sketches:
An art school is an educational institution with a primary focus on the visual arts, including fine art, especially illustration, painting, photography, sculpture, and graphic design. Art schools are institutions with elementary, secondary, post-secondary or undergraduate, or part of a broad-based range of programs. France's École des Beaux-Arts is, perhaps, the first model for such organized institution, breaking with a tradition of master and apprentice system when it was formed.
Fleming College, also known as Sir Sandford Fleming College, is an Ontario College of Applied Arts and Technology located at Peterborough, Ontario, Canada. The college has an enrollment of more than 5,800 full-time and 10,000 part-time students.
Havergal College is an independent boarding and day school for girls from Junior Kindergarten to Grade 12 in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. The school was established in 1894 and named for Frances Ridley Havergal, a composer, author, and humanitarian.
Industrial arts is an educational program which features fabrication of objects in wood or metal using a variety of hand, power, or machine tools. It may include small engine repair and automobile maintenance, and all programs usually cover technical drawing as part of the curricula. As an educational term, industrial arts dates from 1904 when Charles R. Richards of Teachers College, Columbia University, New York suggested it to replace manual training.
PACE at Peterborough Collegiate, formerly Peterborough Collegiate Vocational School, is a public secondary school located in Peterborough, Ontario, Canada and is a member of the Kawartha Pine Ridge District School Board. It is one of the oldest public schools in the country and was the only public high school in the city of Peterborough until the opening of Kenner Collegiate Vocational Institute in 1952. Regular student programming ended at Peterborough Collegiate Vocational School in June 2012. The building was renamed Peterborough Collegiate and in August 2012 opened as a re-purposed facility offering alternative and continuing education (ACE).
The Etobicoke School of the Arts (ESA) is a specialized public arts-academic high school located in the Etobicoke area of Toronto, Ontario, Canada Royal York Collegiate Institute facility. Founded on September 8, 1981, the Etobicoke School of the Arts has the distinction of being the oldest, free standing, arts-focused high school in Canada.
Alexander Mackenzie High School is a public secondary school with classes for students in grades 9 through 12, located in Richmond Hill, Ontario, Canada. The school opened in 1969 as Don Head Secondary School and was renamed Alexander Mackenzie High School in 1992, in honour of Major Addison Alexander Mackenzie, a well-known Richmond Hill resident and philanthropist.
Wexford Collegiate School for the Arts ; formerly Wexford Collegiate Institute is a public high school located in the Scarborough district of Toronto, Ontario, Canada. Run and organized by the Toronto District School Board, the school officially opened to students in September 1965 as Wexford CI by the Scarborough Board of Education and was renamed Wexford Collegiate School for the Arts in 2006 in recognition of its specialized arts programs.
Arts Unionville, is a four-year co-educational arts intensive program at Unionville High School, located in Markham, Ontario. The program allows for specialization in dance, drama, music, and the visual arts. The Nancy Campbell Academy is a grade 7 through 12 Canadian accredited international private Bahá'í school in Stratford, Ontario, Canada. Emphasizing its "twin pillars" of academic excellence and a clear moral framework, NCA satisfies the Ministry of Education (Ontario) standards, leading to the Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD). The Institute was named after Nancy Campbell (1905-1980), an accomplished pianist, artist, actress and dancer, who lived as a "world citizen" motivated by her belief in the Bahá'í Faith. Campbell worked to promote the ideal of the oneness of humanity, and was a dynamic speaker who travelled throughout the world giving lectures on peace and world unity. Breakwell Education Inc. established NCA in 1994 as Nancy Campbell Collegiate Institute, or NCCI. Within seven years of its founding, NCA was among 16 schools rated Number One in a Fraser Institute survey of 816 Ontario high schools.

The Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics Education Program is a science and mathematics-oriented curriculum devised for high schools in the Philippines. The STEM program is offered by specialized high schools, whether public or private, supervised by the Department of Education. Currently, there are 110 high schools offering the STEM program, the majority being public. It was piloted in 1994 by the Department of Science & Technology (DOST).
William Lyon Mackenzie Collegiate Institute is a semestered secondary school located in Toronto, Ontario. It was built in 1960 to accommodate the skyrocketing number of new students in what was then known as North York, and to ease overcrowding at Northview Heights Secondary School. Being located near another high school, Northview Heights Institute of Technology, the school is rumoured to have been called "Southview Heights Institute of Technology", because of the provocative initials. However, it was called Southview Heights Secondary School. Ultimately, William Lyon Mackenzie, the first mayor of Toronto and leader of the Upper Canada Rebellion in 1837, was selected.
Centennial Secondary School is a publicly funded high school in Belleville, Ontario, Canada. The school is part of the Hastings & Prince Edward District School Board. Centennial prides itself on its "Double A" rating, specializing in Arts, Academics and Athletics. The school is also recognized as the regional school for Visual and Performing Arts. As of the 2018-19 academic year, Centennial has an enrollment of 910 students.
