John Bennett, known as DJ Freak, is an English hardcore music DJ and producer. He is credited as one of the first pioneers of the industrial hardcore/speedcore sound.

Musical career

DJ Freak has released over 50 albums to date. He was one of the early pioneers of hardcore and speedcore music in 1992. He has been released on his own two labels, Boneheddz and Hard of Hearing, and other labels such as Killout, Epitaph and Deadly Systems. In 2011, he began releasing side project material in a different style, dark spacey minimal looped abstract techno. He releases these as free downloads, on his pages on SoundCloud and Bandcamp. Freak released a track on Scottish label Motormouth Recordz compilation "Motörheadz - The Album" in 2012 and also a digital only EP on the same label in 2014. [1]

Hard Of Hearing

In the early 1990s, DJ Freak founded the label Hard Of Hearing. It was geared towards subgenres of electronic music such as gabber and hardcore. Practically every release on this label was a DJ Freak release, however, other artists did make appearances on these albums. His most recognised and seminal work was released on Killout. The Hard Of Hearing label ended in 1998.

In 2009, DJ Freak released an album called Hard Of Hearing Reloaded.

Post-hardcore is a punk rock music genre that maintains the aggression and intensity of hardcore punk but emphasizes a greater degree of creative expression. Like the term "post-punk", the term "post-hardcore" has been applied to a broad constellation of groups. Initially taking inspiration from post-punk and noise rock, post-hardcore began in the 1980s with bands like Hüsker Dü and Minutemen. The genre expanded in the 1980s and 1990s with releases by bands from cities that had established hardcore scenes, such as Fugazi from Washington, D.C. as well as groups such as Big Black, Jawbox, Quicksand, and Shellac that stuck closer to post-hardcore's noise rock roots. Dischord Records became a major nexus of post-hardcore during this period.

Joshua Winkelman, better known by his stage name Josh Wink, is an American electronic dance music DJ, label owner, producer, and remixer. He is a native of Philadelphia, United States. Darren James Mew, better known as Darren Styles, is an English record producer, DJ, singer and songwriter from Colchester, Essex, England. Originally a member of the breakbeat hardcore group DJ Force & the Evolution, Styles found success during the 1990s as one half of Force & Styles. The duo were pioneers of happy hardcore and wrote several well-known songs such as "Heart of Gold", "Pretty Green Eyes" and "Paradise & Dreams".

DJ Sharpnel is a Japanese music duo composed of Jea and Lemmy, who are signed under their independent record label Sharpnelsound. They are credited for pioneering the J-core genre, recognized for their speedcore, gabber, happy hardcore and trance productions.

Frenchcore is a subgenre of hardcore techno. The style differs from other forms of hardcore in terms of a faster tempo, usually above 190-250 BPM, and a loud & distorted offbeat bassline.

Gabber is a style of electronic dance music and a subgenre of hardcore techno, as well as the surrounding subculture. The music is more commonly referred to as hardcore, which is characterised by fast beats, distorted and heavy kickdrums, with dark themes and samples. This style was developed in Rotterdam and Amsterdam in the 1990s by producers like Marc Acardipane, Paul Elstak, DJ Rob, and The Prophet, forming record labels such as Rotterdam Records, Mokum Records, Pengo Records and Industrial Strength Records.

Oscar Sibonginkosi Mdlongwa is a South African recording artist, DJ, record producer and businessman. Having been in the music industry for over 26 years, Oskido has reached a prominent status in the South African music industry, more-so in popular youth culture. He is undoubtedly one of the pioneering artists that popularised the Kwaito genre of music outside of the townships of South Africa, and he's been central to the rise of Afro-house and opened doors for the new genre known as amapiano. Oskido is the co-founder of Kalawa Jazmee Records, a record label that is home to musical acts like Mafikizolo, Bongo Maffin, and many other foremost groups.

Teknoaidi is a Finnish hardcore techno and speedcore musician. His music is influenced by folk, world music and noise. He describes his music with the term shamancore. Teknoaidi is a part of the Kovaydin.NET netlabel.

<i>Virtual Self</i> (EP) 2017 EP by Porter Robinson as Virtual Self

Virtual Self is the debut extended play (EP) by American electronic music producer Porter Robinson under the alias Virtual Self, released on November 29, 2017, through an eponymous record label. After releasing his debut studio album Worlds (2014), a deviation from his earlier sound, Robinson suffered with depression and struggled to create a similar-sounding follow-up. He then started planning the Virtual Self project, which used electronic music and Internet webpages from the early 2000s as main sources of inspiration, an idea Robinson became "obsessed" with.

Belgian hardcore techno is an early style of hardcore techno that emerged from new beat as EBM and techno influences became more prevalent in this genre. This particular style has been described as an "apocalyptic, almost Wagnerian, bombastic techno", due to its use of dramatic orchestral stabs and menacing synth tones that set it apart from earlier forms of electronic dance music. It flourished in Belgium and influenced the sound of early hardcore from Netherlands, Germany, Italy, UK and North America during the early-1990s, as a part of the rave movement during that period.
