Da Gryptions is a Canadian hip hop band from Montreal, formed in 2009. The band consists of Future Shark (a.k.a. Trevor Barnes) (vocals), Dark Science (a.k.a. Patrick Guay) (vocals), Apsobibi (a.k.a. Evan Cranley of Stars) (R&B vocals), and Ripples (a.k.a. Stephen Ramsay of Young Galaxy [1] (production and hype-man) and features the studio skills of Liam O'Neil, formerly a member of The Stills.

History

The group had the idea to form the group while car pooling to ball hockey. [2] While initially it was just going to be a faux hip-hop act, they started doing DJ sets around Montreal, eventually putting together a live show.

After doing a few shows "freestyling" someone had videotaped one of these shows, with Apsobibi doing a chorus about Montreal's public bike system, BIXI Montréal. A producer at CJAD in Montreal came across this video and asked if the band could do a studio version that they could play on the air. [2] After shooting a video for the track, it went viral [3] hitting 7,000 plays in two days [2] and 38,000 to date. [4] The song was seen as a local hit [5] [6] and was recognized nationally. [7] The band played the Osheaga Festival that summer [8] [9] and were played on CBC Radio [10] and MusiquePlus as well. It was touted as Montreal's "Song of the summer" [11] as well.

"The Bixi Anthem" was named the number 4 song of the year by the Montreal Gazette in their year-end wrapup. [12]

The band have made mention of recording new Montreal themed songs. "We have a song called 'J'imagine,' about the golden era, if you will, of Montreal, from '67 to '76." Future Shark said to the Montreal Mirror "You know, Nadja Comaneci scoring seven perfect 10s, the metro system, the Expos." [13]

The group made "It's BBQ Time" its next single, releasing it just in time for Saint-Jean-Baptiste on June 24, 2011. [14]

In June 2012, there was mention [15] of J'Imagine possibly being released. On July 28 the video, filmed once again by Who is KK Downey? director Darren Curtis, was uploaded to YouTube, in time for the start of the 2012 Summer Olympics. [16] It was praised for its use of "Montrealisims". According to the Montreal Gazette, "references include the Big O, Youppi, Jean Leloup, Mitsou, Jacques Villeneuve, Nick Auf der Maur, Mordecai Richler, the Expos, July 1, the Oka Crisis, the Ice Storm, the Referendum, poutine, balconville, 5-à-7s, Drinking In L.A., Expo 67 and the Alouettes. As usual, the boys have a mad-styling video to go with the dope jam".

Because of Apsobibi's commitment to Stars the band will not be able to tour this release.[ citation needed ]

Pop Montreal

POP Montreal is an annual music festival occurring in Montreal, Quebec, Canada, in the early fall, usually at the end of September or the beginning of October. More than 400 bands are scheduled to play in more than 50 venues across the city, mostly located in the Mile End area. Along with music, POP Montreal has music-related film, art events as well as a conference and a cultural fair called Puces Pop. The initial festival in 2002 saw 80 musical acts performing in 40 venues around Saint Laurent Boulevard.

Osheaga Festival

The Osheaga Music and Arts Festival is a multi-day indie music festival in Montreal, Quebec, that is held every summer at Parc Jean-Drapeau on Île Sainte-Hélène. The festival takes place on six stages with various audience capacities. Translated from their French equivalents, they are called "River Stage," "Mountain Stage," "Green Stage," "Trees Stage," "Valley Stage," and "Zone Piknic Electronik." Each performance area is paired with a sponsor. Band set times fluctuate based on the status of the performer within the festival. Emerging artists play 30-minute sets, and headliners conclude each day with 90-minute plus sets. The 2006 festival attracted a crowd of around 25,000 people. The 2012 festival reached its 40,000 attendance capacity each day.

Maxime Morin, is a multi-instrumentalist, better known for his work in electronic music under the name DJ Champion or simply Champion. Morin is based in Montreal, Quebec, Canada.

Arkells Canadian rock band

Arkells are a Canadian rock band, formed in Hamilton, Ontario. In 2006, they signed with Dine Alone Records, and have since signed with Universal Records Canada and Last Gang Records. Liam ONeil (musician)

Liam O'Neil is a Canadian musician who was the keyboardist and percussionist for Montreal-based band the Stills. He met the group's primary songwriter, Dave Hamelin, at school through a mutual friend. In 1996, the pair formed a ska band, in which O'Neil played saxophone. He later spent 18 months away from Montreal while he played in a jazz trio on a cruise ship, but he stayed in contact with the members of the Stills. After initially touring with the band, he became a full-time member when his bandmates heard him play a half-hour piano solo in a hotel bar. His first album with the band was Without Feathers. A talented multi-instrumentalist, he played piano, organ, saxophone and tambourine on the record, as well as providing backing vocals on a number of tracks.
