Dakshin Bihar Gramin Bank (DBGB) was a Regional rural bank (RRB) operating in the Indian state of Bihar. [1] It was created on 1 January 2019 by the amalgamation of Madhya Bihar Gramin Bank and Bihar Gramin Bank. [1] The bank operated across the southern and central districts of Bihar and had over 1,000 branches before the later state-level consolidation. [2]
Dakshin Bihar Gramin Bank came into existence on 1 January 2019 following Department of Financial Services notifications that merged two predecessor Madhya Bihar Gramin Bank and Bihar Gramin Bank(old) into a single entity sponsored by Punjab National Bank. [1] As part of the central government's "One State, One RRB" consolidation drive, the Government of India issued a gazetted notification in April 2025 to amalgamate Dakshin Bihar Gramin Bank with Uttar Bihar Gramin Bank to form a single statewide entity named Bihar Gramin Bank, effective 1 May 2025. [3] Major national and local media covered the merger and the creation of the larger Bihar Gramin Bank(New) from 1 May 2025. [4]
Before being amalgamated into Bihar Gramin Bank, DBGB followed the standard RRB ownership model: the Government of India held 50%, the sponsor bank (Punjab National Bank) held 35% and the Government of Bihar held 15%. [1] The bank reported an extensive branch network in southern Bihar and provided rural credit, agricultural finance and financial inclusion initiatives up to the time of amalgamation. [2]
DBGB provided services typical of RRBs, including deposit accounts, agricultural and allied finance, MSME lending, retail loans, government-sponsored schemes implementation (e.g., Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojana, Pradhan Mantri Mudra Yojana) and digital banking channels where available. [1] The bank supported credit delivery to small farmers and rural enterprises in its operating districts until transfer of its undertakings to Bihar Gramin Bank on 1 May 2025. [3]
Prior to the 2025 amalgamation, DBGB operated over 1,000 branches across several districts in southern and central Bihar (official branch counts before consolidation were reported at ~1,078 branches in public sources). [2]
Per the Department of Financial Services notification dated 7 April 2025, the undertakings, assets and liabilities of Dakshin Bihar Gramin Bank were transferred to the newly constituted Bihar Gramin Bank with effect from 1 May 2025; DBGB therefore ceased to exist as an independent RRB from that effective date.
