Dan Bickley (born September 17, 1963) is an American sports radio talk show host and on-line sports columnist in Phoenix, Arizona.

Early life and education

Bickley grew up on the South Side of Chicago, where he developed an early love for print journalism. [1] He graduated William Fremd High School (Palatine, Illinois) in 1981, [2] and from Harper College in 1984 with a degree in journalism. [3]

Professional career

His first job in journalism was with the Chicago Sun-Times , where he was a sports beat reporter. He covered the Chicago Bulls and Michael Jordan during their championship runs. After leaving the Sun-Times he became a syndicated columnist for the Copley News Service. In 1998 he moved to Arizona to cover the expansion baseball team, the Arizona Diamondbacks, for the Arizona Republic. [1] He was also a sports anchor for the local NBC affiliate, until a change of ownership. [4] He became the lead sports columnist for The Arizona Republic and its on-line edition, AZCentral.com. [5] After several years in Arizona, he began doing sports talk radio on KGME and in 2009 the show was voted "Best Local Sports Talk" radio show. [6] In 2013 he moved to KMVP-FM, later branded as Arizona Sports 98.7 FM. In 2018 the show was expanded to four hours, and he left print journalism. [4] He has continued his column only on-line and exclusively for Arizonasports.com. [7] He has expressed a pessimistic view of the future for print journalism: "The Golden Age of Journalism didn't last...newspapers are dying." He now feels liberated from deadlines, paywalls and pop-up ads. [1] He has been called the closest thing Phoenix has to a sports media superstar. [8]

Bickley has written two books, both about sports figures with strong Chicago connections, Jerry Colangelo and Dennis Rodman. In the 2009 Return of the Gold: The Journey of Jerry Colangelo and the Redeem Team Bickley paints a very positive image of Colangelo. He describes Colangelo's difficult Chicago upbringing and how he used his reputation and credibility to save USA Basketball after humiliating Olympic basketball defeats in 2004. [9] Almost a decade later he has retained his enthusiasm for Colangelo, recommending he take over the last place Phoenix Suns. [10] No Bull: The Unauthorized Biography of Dennis Rodman (1997) discussed the career and bizarre antics of Rodman. He posits that rather than his behavior being out of control, Rodman deftly manipulated the media and fans. [11]

Bickley has won multiple awards for sports writing from the Arizona Press Club. [12] [13] [14] The Arizona Press Club's comment on his 2013 award:

Bickley’s London Olympics columns were superbly crafted, painstakingly researched, wonderfully insightful — and stunningly far-ranging, with great depth and breadth as he presented multiple, disparate, unique and fascinatingly comprehensive reports on the Games. He won this category in a landslide. [15]

Personal

Bickley is married to Tamara Bickley, a professional make-up artist, and has three children. [16] Music has always been one of his passions; he plays rhythm guitar for the rock cover band Whiskey's Quicker. [17] He founded the group in 2011. [18]

He was also instrumental in the relocation of the original Winnipeg Jets team in the NHL to Phoenix to become the Phoenix Coyotes. In 2014, Grand Canyon University renamed its Christian based school of business after Jerry Colangelo, replacing Ken Blanchard's namesake. From December 2015 to April 2016, Colangelo served as chairman of basketball operations for the Philadelphia 76ers, before serving as a special advisor to the team until December 2018.

He coached the Phoenix Suns three times, was named the NBA Coach of the Year twice, and is often credited as the architect of the Suns' success of the late 1980s and early to middle 1990s. Fitzsimmons won 1,089 games in his coaching career: 223 games at the junior college level, 34 at the Division I college level and 832 in the NBA.

The Diamondback is an independent student newspaper associated with the University of Maryland, College Park. It began in 1910 as The Triangle and became known as The Diamondback in 1921. Now a weekly online journal, The Diamondback was published as a daily print newspaper on weekdays until 2013. It is published by Maryland Media, Inc., a non-profit organization. The newspaper receives no university funding and derives its revenue from advertising.

The 1995–96 NBA season was the Bulls' 30th season in the National Basketball Association. During the off-season, the Bulls acquired controversial All-Star forward and rebound specialist Dennis Rodman from the San Antonio Spurs, and signed free agents Randy Brown and James Edwards. At midseason, the team signed John Salley, who was previously released by the expansion Toronto Raptors; Rodman, Edwards and Salley were all teammates on the Detroit Pistons during the "Bad Boy" era, where they won two straight championships in 1989 and 1990. The Bulls had the best team offensive rating and the best team defensive rating in the NBA.

Jon Kelley is an American sports journalist, author, producer, and television personality. Born and raised in Lincoln, Nebraska, Kelley played four seasons of college football as a running back for the Nebraska Cornhuskers at before graduating from the University of Nebraska–Lincoln with a Bachelor of Arts degree in broadcast journalism. He signed as a free agent with the Denver Broncos of the National Football League (NFL) in 1988 before embarking on a broadcasting career.

The Arizona Diamondbacks are an American professional baseball team based in Phoenix, Arizona. They were formed in 1998, and are based at Chase Field. This followed five years of preparation under the leadership of Jerry Colangelo. The Diamondbacks won the World Series championship in 2001, becoming the fastest expansion team in the Major Leagues to win a championship, doing so in only the fourth season since inception in 1998. Financial difficulties were then encountered and the home field was renamed to Chase Field in 2005, as a result of Bank One Corporation's merger with JPMorgan Chase & Co. After a lean period the team won the National League West division in 2011.

Brown subsequently played for the NBA G League franchises of the Suns and Chicago Bulls before playing in Europe.

Sports in Phoenix include several professional sports franchises, and is one of only 13 U.S. cities to have representatives of all four major professional sports leagues, although only one of these teams actually carry the city name and play within the city limits. Phoenix was the last of the metropolitan areas with teams in all four leagues to gain its first major professional sports team, when the Suns were granted a franchise in 1968.
