Dan Parsons is an American comic book artist and illustrator. He is best known for his work on Star Wars [1] and Game of Thrones .

Career

Dan Parsons started out in comics self-publishing his creator-owned series Harpy, which became part of the late-1990s indy comics “bad girl” movement. He wrote and penciled Harpy as an ongoing comic book series, and, with its increasing visibility, Parsons was hired to pencil and ink another popular “bad girl” series called Razor (London Night Studios). [2] Parsons contributed cover art, writing, and illustrations for Threshold (Avatar Press), [3] which featured his character Harpy, and Pantha , written by Pat Quinn ( Faust ). Parsons provided wash tones for Warren Ellis's Strange Kiss , as well as the sequel, Stranger Kisses . He also penciled, inked, and did cover work for the classic Battlestar Galactica comic book series (Millennium Press); [4] All this while still working full time as a scientific researcher at Johns Hopkins Bayview Medical Center.

Parsons went on to release another creator-owned series: Savage Planet, which he describes as a tribute to the EC Comics of the 1950s, honoring the work of Frank Frazetta and Al Williamson. [5] It was at SDCC 2002, promoting the release of Savage Planet, that Parsons met Jan Duursema, the ongoing penciller of Star Wars. Recognizing Parsons’ similarity of inking style with Williamson, (the original classic Star Wars cartoonist); Duursema recommended Parsons to the Star Wars team over at Dark Horse Comics. [6] He was hired immediately, and worked at Dark Horse as the primary inker on a wide range of Star Wars titles, including Star Wars , Legacy, Dawn of the Jedi , [7] Clone Wars, Republic , Rebel Heist [8] and many more. He continued inking Star Wars comic book titles until the end of the Dark Horse era in 2014, (when the Disney Corporation purchased the Star Wars franchise). Parsons would win an Inkwell Award in 2010 and again in 2015, for his ink work on the Star Wars comics. Other inking credits include DC Comics Nightwing Convergence and other Dark Horse Comics titles: (Ghost, King Kong ). [9]

Parsons has also done some work for Hollywood. In 2011, he did a series of elaborate pencil drawings for the season one Blu-ray/DVD for HBO's Game of Thrones . His renditions of Aegon the Conqueror and other characters have become the definitive visual representations of George R.R. Martin's literary creations. More recently he illustrated an Avatar: the Last Airbender book for Nickelodeon/Insight Editions [10] and a graphic novel adaptation of Ayn Rand’s 1937 sci-fi classic, Anthem. [11] In addition to these projects, Parsons worked on numerous trading cards for the Topps Company from 2002 to present. Parsons is currently penciling and wash-painting a new Sherlock Holmes five-issue miniseries ( Brothers of Baker Street ), and inking James Cameron’s new six-issue Avatar miniseries ( Tsu’tey’s Path ). Awards

He is a double recipient (2010 and 2015) of the Inkwell Award for his work on Star Wars comics from Dark Horse Comics. [14] In 2014, he received a Ghastly Award [15] for excellence in horror comics. In September 2018, Parsons was named Inkwell Awards Special Ambassador. [16] [17]

Jack Abel

The series, published by Dark Horse Comics, is written by John Ostrander and Jan Duursema, and illustrated by Duursema and others, with inks by Dan Parsons and color by Brad Anderson. Issue #0, which cost 25¢ and introduced the setting and major characters, was released on June 7, 2006.

Star Wars: Clone Wars or The Clone Wars are titles of various series of comics set in the Star Wars universe during the Clone Wars conflict. Dark Horse Comics published a nine-volume series of trade paperbacks (2003–2006) collecting various comics dealing with the conflict, a ten-volume graphic-novella series titled Clone Wars: Adventures (2004–2007) in the style of the 2D animated series, and both a monthly comic book series (2008–2010) and a quarterly graphic-novella series (2008–2013) tying into the 3D animated series.

Inkwell Awards

The Inkwell Award, sometimes shortened to the Inkwells, is a trophy given in the field of inking in American comic books. The awards were partially named after the Yahoo group whose members include many in the inking community, and after the personal website name of organization founder Bob Almond. The awards concept was created in an "Inkblots" column by Almond in Sketch Magazine #35 in 2007, which saw print in 2008 after the group formation. The mission statement is, "To promote and educate about the craft of comic book inking and to show recognition for ink artists."

David Roach is a British comic book artist and writer based in Wales, United Kingdom. Roach actively illustrates for many companies, including 2000 AD, Panini Comics, Marvel Comics, DC Comics, Dark Horse Comics, Topps, and the gaming company Wizards of the Coast.

<i>Star Wars: Dawn of the Jedi</i>

Star Wars: Dawn of the Jedi is an American comic book series set in the Star Wars universe. The series, published by Dark Horse Comics, is written by John Ostrander, pencilled by Jan Duursema, inked by Dan Parsons, and colored by Wes Dzioba. It is set in the earliest days of the Jedi Order, beginning in 36,453 BBY. A preview issue, #0, was released on February 1, 2012, and followed by the first issue on February 15, 2012. Dawn of the Jedi ended after the third arc, since Marvel Comics acquired the Star Wars comic license in 2015. The miniseries concluded with the last issue Force Wars #5 having been released March 19, 2014.
