Daniel Scanlon (born June 21, 1976) is an American filmmaker, storyboard artist, and animator working for Pixar, for whom he has directed Monsters University (2013) and Onward (2020). [4]

Early life

Scanlon grew up in Clawson, Michigan. [5] When he was one year old and his brother three years old, their father died, and when they were teenagers, a relative gave them a brief audio recording of their father. Scanlon has said that these experiences helped inspire the story of Onward. [6] He graduated with a BFA from the Columbus College of Art and Design in 1998.

Career

Scanlon was an animator for The Indescribable Nth and Joseph: King of Dreams . He served as a storyboard artist for The Little Mermaid II: Return to the Sea and 101 Dalmatians II: Patch's London Adventure . [3]

Scanlon joined Pixar in 2001, [3] where he was a story artist for Cars and Toy Story 3 . He co-directed the short film Mater and the Ghostlight . [3] He illustrated part one of Unmentionables, a comic book written by his wife, Michele Scanlon, and wrote and directed the live-action feature film Tracy. [7] Tracy was Scanlon's first feature film as a writer/director. He also served as a member of the senior creative team on Brave and Inside Out .

Scanlon directed the prequel film of Monsters, Inc. , Monsters University , released in 2013, to positive reviews and commercial success. He subsequently directed the fantasy-road trip film Onward (2020), [6] featuring the voices of Tom Holland, Chris Pratt, Julia Louis-Dreyfus and Octavia Spencer. [8] It was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Animated Feature, but lost to another Pixar film Soul . [9]

In February 2021, Scanlon stated that he and Kori Rae will develop another original Pixar feature film. [10]

Scanlon and his wife Michele live in San Francisco and work together on projects under the production company name Caveat Productions.

Monsters University is a 2013 American animated comedy film produced by Walt Disney Pictures and Pixar Animation Studios and released by Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures. It was directed by Dan Scanlon, produced by Kori Rae, and written by Scanlon and the writing team of Dan Gerson and Robert L. Baird. John Lasseter, Pete Docter, Andrew Stanton, and Lee Unkrich served as the film's executive producers. The music for the film was composed and conducted by Randy Newman, making it his seventh collaboration with Pixar. It is the prequel to Monsters, Inc. (2001), making it the only time Pixar has made a prequel film. Monsters University tells the story of the main characters of Monsters, Inc., James P. Sullivan and Mike Wazowski, and their time at college where they start off as bitter rivals but slowly become best friends. They are paired in a series of competitive scare-oriented events with their fraternity, and Wazowski ultimately learns that some things cannot be taught. John Goodman, Billy Crystal, Steve Buscemi, Bob Peterson, and John Ratzenberger reprise their roles as James P. Rosana Sullivan is an American filmmaker and storyboard artist. Since 2011, she has worked for Pixar Animation Studios. She wrote and directed her first animated short film, Kitbull (2019), for which she received a nomination for the Academy Award for Best Animated Short Film at the 92nd Academy Awards.

Kelsey Mann is an American storyboard artist, screenwriter and director. He will make his feature directorial debut with the upcoming Pixar film Inside Out 2 (2024), the sequel to the 2015 film.
