Daniel Kebede is a British trade union leader.
Kebede studied law at the University of Wales before becoming a schoolteacher. He taught in early years, primary and secondary schools, and became active in the National Union of Teachers (NUT). [1] In 2017, he won the union's Blair Peach Award for his contributions to social justice. [2] The NUT later became part of the National Education Union (NEU), and in 2019, Kebede was elected to its executive committee. In 2021, he was elected as the union's president. [1]
Kebede stood to become general secretary of the NEU in 2023. He won the post, defeating deputy general secretary Niamh Sweeney by 28,636 votes to 12,918. He listed his priorities as ending real term pay cuts, the overwork of staff, and the Ofsted inspection regime, and securing real term increases to school funding. [3] On election, The Voice described Kebede as "only the fourth Black General Secretary of a union in Britain". [2]

Jahana Hayes is an American educator and politician serving as the U.S. representative for Connecticut's 5th congressional district since 2019. The district, once represented by U.S. Senator Chris Murphy, comprises much of the state's northwestern portion, including New Britain, Danbury, and Waterbury. A member of the Democratic Party, Hayes is the first Black woman and Black Democrat to represent Connecticut in Congress. She was recognized as the National Teacher of the Year in 2016.
Granville Charles Trelawney Giles, known as GCT Giles, was a leading British communist, most famous for playing a central role in the evacuation of three million children to the countryside during World War II, and for playing a prominent role in the formation of Britain's post-war educational reforms. Despite being educated at both Eton College and the University of Cambridge, he was a supporter of the comprehensive school system, fighting for the rights of working-class children and teachers. He was also the first communist to be appointed president of the National Union of Teachers (NUT), and headed a school which following his retirement became one of Britain's first comprehensive schools.
